Chapter 1. Storage Agent Oeriew Managed System for SAN is a feature of IBM Tioli Storage Manager (Storage Manager) that enables LAN-free Storage Manager client data moement. The Storage Manager client data moes directly to and from a storage deice attached to a Storage Area Network (SAN), thereby off-loading the data moement from the LAN and from the Storage Manager serer. The storage agent is installed on the client machine and shares storage resources with the Storage Manager serer. The storage agent can write directly to storage media in a format that is consistent with that used by the serer. The Storage Manager serer or serers control the storage deices and keep track of the data that the client has stored. Storage Manager continues to use a LAN connection to exchange control information, such as policy information and data about the objects that are backed up. Using the SAN for client data moement decreases the load on the Storage Manager serer and allows the serer to support a greater number of simultaneous client connections. See Figure 1. Client Storage Agent installed Library Control Client Metadata LAN Storage Manager Serer Client Data SAN Library Control File Library Tape Library Figure 1. SAN Data Moement. Solid lines indicate data moement. Broken lines indicate moement of control information and metadata. To use Managed System for SAN you must install a storage agent on the client system. The storage agent communicates with the serer to obtain and store database information and to coordinate deice and olume access. The serer determines if the client is requesting access to storage for which the client has a SAN path defined. If a SAN path is defined, the client (by means of the storage Copyright IBM Corp. 2000,

agent) transfers data on that path. If a failure occurs on the SAN path, failoer occurs and the client uses its LAN connection to the Storage Manager serer and moes the client data oer the LAN. Storage Manager supports SAN-attached deice sharing in one of the following ways: Storage Manager natie library management support consisting of a library manager and library clients or just a library manager. Shared disk storage using a FILE library and the integration of the Tioli SANergy product. External library support, in tape libraries managed by StorageTek Automated Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS) and middleware that enables Storage Manager to share ACSLS-managed libraries. In this enironment the deice sharing capability is proided by third-party software, such as Gresham Extended Data Technology DistribuTAPE (EDT-DistribuTAPE) a middleware software program that takes adantage of Storage Manager s external library interface to allow tape dries in ACSLS-managed libraries to be shared among Storage Manager serers. For additional information about these configurations, see Types of Configurations on page 3. LAN-free Client Data Backup Scenario The following outlines a typical backup scenario for a Storage Manager client that uses SAN data moement. This scenario does not apply to External library enironments. 1. The client begins a backup operation. The client and the serer exchange policy information oer the LAN to determine the destination of the backed up data. For a client using LAN-free data moement, the destination is a storage pool that uses a deice on the SAN. That deice must also hae a defined path between the deice and the storage agent. 2. Because the destination is on the SAN, the client contacts the storage agent, which will handle the data transfer. The storage agent sends a request for a olume mount to the serer. 3. The serer contacts the storage deice and mounts the appropriate media. 4. The serer notifies the client of the location where the mounted media resides. 5. The client, by means of the storage agent, writes the backup data directly to the deice oer the SAN. 6. The storage agent sends file attribute information to the Storage Manager serer, and the serer stores the information in its database. Dual-session No-Query Restore for LAN-free Path When performing a No-Query restore the Storage Manager serer builds a list of files to restore and sends data to the client while continuing to build the list. This type of restore is more efficient, especially in a LAN-free enironment, and allows the restore to be restarted if interrupted. Two sessions are used for the restore when data for the restore resides on deices with a LAN-free path and deices with a LAN-only path. One session restores data from the serer with a LAN-only path. The other session uses the storage agent to restore data oer the LAN-free path. This works only with clients at the 4.2 leel or aboe. 2 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

Chapter 2. Planning Types of Configurations You can set up a Managed System for SAN in a number of configurations. Planning the system configuration proides a smooth transition through system setup and into production. As part of your planning, you need to identify the following: Which configuration to implement Deices to be used for LAN-free data moement Clients to use LAN-free data moement For tape libraries (except ACSLS-managed StorageTek tape libraries), which serers, library manager or library client, will manage which client s data. There are different types of configurations that take adantage of what can be accomplished using a storage agent in a LAN-free enironment. Your enironment is dependent upon the type of storage deice you will be using for LAN-free data storage. The following sections coer descriptions and planning considerations for seeral typical LAN-free enironments. These enironments are: 1. SCSI and 349X Tape Library sharing using the Storage Manager Library Manager and Client. See Sharing Tape Storage using Storage Manager Library Manager/Client. 2. File deice sharing using SANergy. See Sharing Disk Storage using Tioli SANergy on page Sharing a library managed by ACSLS or LibraryStation software. See External Library Sharing ACSLS-Managed Libraries on page 5. Sharing Tape Storage using Storage Manager Library Manager/Client When Storage Manager serers share a SCSI tape or 349X storage deice using a library manager and library clients, one serer, the library manager, owns and controls the tape library deice. The library manager operations include checking olumes into and out of the library, labeling olumes, mounting and dismounting olumes, auditing olumes, and creating an inentory of library contents. The library manager also manages the storage hierarchy and performs such serer functions as storage pool migrations, reclamation, collocation, and backup and restore of storage pools and the database. All of the other Storage Manager serers sharing this library are considered library clients. A library client requests shared library resources, such as dries or media from the Storage Manager serer acting as the library manager, but uses the resources independently. The library manager coordinates the access to these resources. Data moes oer the SAN between the storage deice and either the library manager or the library client. Either the library manager or any library client can manage the LAN-free moement of client data as long as the client system includes a storage agent. The Library Manager and Library Client configurations are represented in Figure 2 on page 4. Copyright IBM Corp. 2000,

Figure 2. Library Manager/Client LAN free Configuration Note: An enironment can hae a Library Manager without a Library Client. The configurations represented in the preious illustration are the following: A Storage Manager serer library manager manages a client s data, which is stored on a tape library. A Storage Manager serer library client manages a client s data, which is stored on a tape library. Sharing Disk Storage using Tioli SANergy When Storage Manager serers share access to disk storage, the enironment contains a FILE library (Storage Manager serer File deice class) and utilizes the SANergy product. SANergy proides a file sharing accelerator. Because you will be using a FILE library, you must determine where the Tioli SANergy client and the Tioli SANergy Metadata Controller (MDC) will be installed. You will also require a Windows share (CIFS) or a Network File Share (NFS) on a Unix system to achiee file sharing. See Figure 3 on page 5 and Table 1 on page 5 for the possible Tioli SANergy configurations. See the SANergy publications for additional information about configuring SANergy. 4 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

For example, one possible configuration is for the Tioli SANergy client to be installed on the Storage Manager client machine ( 1 ) and the Tioli SANergy MDC to be installed on the Storage Manager serer ( 2 ). These configurations can also consist of multiple platforms. For example, an enironment can consist of a SUN MDC working with a Windows and AIX client. Table 1. See Figure 4 on page 6. The ACSLS Serer (or Library Station) manages the physical aspects of tape cartridge storage and retrieal. The external library manager, in this discussion Gresham EDT, communicates with the ACSLS Serer or LibraryStation to access tape cartridges in an automated StorageTek library. The storage agent installed on a machine containing Gresham EDT and a Storage Manager or Tioli Data Protection (TDP) client proides access to SAN-attached storage deices resulting in LAN-free data moement. 19 Chapter 3. Installation and Configuration The following information describes the installation and configuration of the storage agent LAN-free enironment. There are two procedures. The procedure you choose to follow depends upon the type of enironment you are implementing. The first procedure coers enironments that are using one or more of the following: SCSI and 349X Tape Library sharing using the Storage Manager Library Manager and Client File deice sharing using SANergy For installation and configuration steps, see Procedure 1 Tape and File Sharing with SCSI and 349X Tape and File Deices on page 10. The second procedure specifically describes external library support for ACSLS library enironment configuration. See Procedure 2 External Library Enironment with an ACSLS Managed Library on page 20. For high-leel descriptions of these enironments, see Chapter 1, Storage Agent Oeriew on page 1 and Types of Configurations on page 3. To begin the installation and configuration process, read the summary of the procedure, reiew the complete procedure which follows the summary, and then perform the steps described in the procedure. The summary itself briefly describes the oerall configuration. It is a good idea to understand the oerall process before beginning the procedure, since the process takes place on multiple machines at different times. Following the summary is the complete procedure containing the step-by-step installation and configuration instructions. Summary of Tasks for Procedure 1 The following summarizes the installation and configuration tasks proided in the procedure: Verifying network configuration Note: Ensure that your system meets the prerequisites for the SAN configuration. Establishing communications among client, storage agent, and Storage Manager serer Client System: Install the Storage Manager client or TDP client, and the Storage Manager API. Specify the LAN-free option Install and set up the storage agent Storage Manager Serer: If your enironment is using tape deices, configure the library and dries on the SAN Copyright IBM Corp. 2000,

If your enironment is using disk deices, configure Enterprise Management and define the FILE deice class Configuring deices for the storage agent to access Client System: If your enironment is using disk deices, skip this step. If your enironment is using tape deices, obtain tape deice information Serer (Storage Agent): Define paths between the storage agents and deices Client System: Start the storage agent Verify the LAN-free configuration Procedure 1 Tape and File Sharing with SCSI and 349X Tape and File Deices Step 1. Network The following steps describe configuring a storage agent enironment consisting of either shared libraries or shared disk, or both. If you are configuring an external library, that is, an ACSLS-managed library enironment, see Procedure 2 External Library Enironment with an ACSLS Managed Library on page 20. The serer system and the client systems must be attached to the SAN along with appropriate storage deices. The serer system and the client systems must also be connected by means of a LAN. The Managed System for SAN feature requires specific leels and models of hardware and software. Ensure that your system configuration meets the hardware and software requirements for the SAN setup. See the Web site, for details. Note: If you will be using Tioli storage agent with disk media, you must hae installed Tioli SANergy Version on the applicable machines. See Figure 3 on page 5 for possible Tioli SANergy configurations. See the Tioli SANergy Administrator s Guide for details. Establishing Communications among Client, Storage Agent, and Serer For a pictorial representation of what you will accomplish during the next two steps, see Figure 5 on page 15. Step 2. Client System The procedures in this step describe installation of the Storage Manager client, API, and storage agent software. Install or Upgrade the Client and API Software 1. Check that the client system meets the prerequisites for client software. See the User s Guide for the client. Install the client software and API if it is not already installed on the system, or upgrade the software to the latest leel as 10 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

necessary. The latest leels can be downloaded from the IBM Tioli Storage Manager Web site at 2. Modify the Storage Manager options file (dsm.sys). For information about the dsm.opt and dsm.sys files, see Backup-Archie Clients Installation and User s Guide. a. Edit the dsm.sys file to specify the communications method between the Storage Manager client and serer. For example: COMMmethod TCPip TCPSereraddress tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com TCPPort 1502 Note: For illustratie purposes a tcpport of 1502 is used in the examples; howeer, the default tcpport is b. Edit the dsm.opt file to specify the serer name of the dsm.sys stanza edited in step a. For example: serername tsmsrer c. Add the following options to the same dsm.sys stanza edited in step a. These options specify that the client will use SAN-attached deices when the path is aailable, during backup, restore, archie, and retriee processing. enablelanfree yes LANFREECommmethod TCPIP LANFREETCPPort If your are using a TDP client, configure the API by performing the following procedure: a. Set up the enironment ariables. The Storage Manager API uses unique enironment ariables to locate files. DSMI_CONFIG is the fully qualified name for the client user option file. DSMI_DIR points to the path containing dsm.sys, dsmtca, and the subdirectory en_us. en_us subdirectory must contain dsmclientv3.cat. DSMI_LOG points to the path for the dsierror.log file The following are examples of how to set up these enironment ariables. export DSMI_CONFIG=/opt/tioli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.opt export DSMI_DIR=/opt/tioli/tsm/client/api/bin export DSMI_LOG=/home/user_a/logdir Note: The quickest method to set the enironment ariables is to add these ariables to the user s profile file. b. Edit the dsm.sys file to specify the communications method between the Storage Manager API and serer. 1) If a dsm.sys file does not exist in the directory specified by DSMI_DIR, create a symbolic link to the dsm.sys file in the Storage Manager client installation directory. For example: ln -s /opt/tioli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.sys /opt/tioli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.sys 2) Edit an existing stanza in the dsm.sys file or create a new stanza to specify the options for connecting to the Storage Manager serer. For example: Chapter 3. Installation and Configuration 11

SErername tsmsrer COMMmethod TCPip TCPPort 1502 TCPSereraddress tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com Note: For illustratie purposes a tcpport of 1502 is used in the examples; howeer, the default tcpport is c. Edit the dsm.opt file specified by the DSMI_CONFIG enironment ariable to specify the serer name of the dsm.sys stanza edited in the preious step. For example: serername tsmsrer Install and Configure the Storage Agent Note: The Storage Agent should not be installed on the same machine as the Storage Manager serer. On the same system as the client, install the storage agent by performing the following steps. The default installation directory is /opt/tioli/tsm/storageagent/bin. 1. Record the following information. This information is required throughout the remainder of this procedure. Storage agent: Name and password for the storage agent. Decide on a name and password that will be used to initialize the storage agent and to define the storage agent as a serer to the Storage Manager serer. For example: Name: storagnt Password: fun4me TCP/IP address: agent.tucson.ibm.com Storage Manager serer: Information about the Storage Manager serer that the storage agent will need in order to communicate with the serer. This is the same Storage Manager serer with which the client communicates. For example: Name: tsmsrer Password: not4u TCP/IP address: tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com TCP/IP port: 1502 Notes: a. You can erify the serer information by issuing the QUERY STATUS command from a Storage Manager administratie command-line. b. The Serer Password Set displayed in the QUERY STATUS output must be equal to YES and for this example the password is set to not4u. To set the serer password issue the SET SERVERPASSWORD command from a Storage Manager administratie command-line. For example: set sererpassword not4u 2. Log in as the root user. 3. Verify that ersion or higher of the GNU libc libraries is installed. 4. Insert the storage agent CD-ROM into a CD-ROM drie. The following discussion assumes that the CD-ROM is mounted on directory /mnt/cdrom. 5. See the README.STA file on the CD-ROM for changes to the installation procedure. 6. Use the rpm command to install the storage agent packages. For example: 12 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

rpm -ih <packagename> Where packagename is one or more package names (separated by a space) listed in Table 3. Table 3. When the installation is finished, remoe the CD from the drie. 8. Ensure that the DEVCONFIG option is specified in the dsmsta.opt file. If not, edit the dsmsta.opt file, which is located in/opt/tioli/tsm/storageagent/bin, and enter the following line: DEVCONFIG deconfig.out Note: deconfig.out is an example of a deice configuration file name. 9. Use the information that you collected in step 1 on page 12 to issue the DSMSTA SETSTORAGESERVER command. For example: dsmsta setstorageserer myname=storagnt mypassword=fun4me myhladdress=agent.tucson.ibm.com serername=tsmsrer sererpassword=not4u hladdress=tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com lladdress=1502 Note: The hladdress must match the TCPSereraddress located in the dsm.sys file on the Storage Manager client. See Set Installation Data for the Storage Agent: DSMSTA SETSTORAGESERVER on page 31 for details about the command parameters. The command generates the following lines in the deice configuration file for the storage agent: SET STANAME storagnt SET STAPASSWORD xxxxxxx SET STAHLADDRESS agent.tucson.ibm.com DEFINE SERVER tsmsrer sererpassword=xxxxxxxxxxx HLADDRESS=tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com LLADDRESS=1502 The passwords (shown here as xxxxxxxx) are encrypted in the file. The command also generates the following line in the dsmsta.opt file: SERVERNAME tsmsrer See The Storage Agent Options File on page 33 and The Deice Configuration File for the Storage Agent on page 33 for details on these files. Chapter 3. Installation and Configuration 13

Step 3. IBM Tioli Storage Manager Serer The following proides the steps that you need to perform on the Storage Manager serer. If further explanation is required, see Administrator s Guide. 1. For each client that you want to enable SAN data transfer, define the client s storage agent to the Storage Manager serer as if the storage agent is a serer. You must use the same name and password that you set for the storage agent when you installed it on the client system. The DEFINE SERVER command must be issued from the Storage Manager serer (library manager or library client) that will manage the client s data. For example: define serer storagnt sererpassword=fun4me hladdress=agent.tucson.ibm.com lladdress=1500 alidateprotocol=all Note: The VALIDATEPROTOCOL parameter in the preious example is optional. This parameter determines whether a cyclic redundancy check should be performed to alidate data on all metadata transferred between the storage agent and the Storage Manager serer. See the Administrator s Reference for additional information about the DEFINE SERVER command. See the Administrator s Guide for additional information about data alidation. 2. Configure the SAN dries. This inoles the following steps: Tape Deice a. Define a shared SCSI or 3494 library b. Define paths to the library using the DEFINE PATH command on the serer c. Define dries that are associated with the library d. Define paths to the dries using the DEFINE PATH command on the serer e. Define the deice class f. Define the storage pool Disk Deice Configure Enterprise Management and define a deice class of DEVTYPE=FILE and SHARED=YES. Storage Manager automatically defines a new FILE library and also defines dries corresponding to the mount limit for the FILE deice class. The FILE library name is the same as the deice class name. Each drie uses the library name with a numeric suffix. If the mount limit is changed, the number of dries also changes. Note: Because each session gets exclusie access to a file olume, the mount limit should correspond to the number of expected concurrent backups. 3. Modify policy for the client so the storage agent, acting on behalf of the client, is associated with a storage pool that uses the dries on the SAN. The client must use a management class that has copy groups with a destination storage pool. The destination storage pool must be associated with the library. The library must be the one on which drie paths hae been defined. For example, do the following: a. Create a policy domain for clients that will use the SAN deices for direct data transfer. b. Create a policy set in that domain. c. In the default management class for that policy set, modify the copy groups. Set the destination storage pool to the storage pool associated with the SAN dries that you configured. 14 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

Note: If you decide not to use the default management class for the SAN dries, you will need to create a new management class. Clients that want to use the SAN dries need to use an include statement to bind their files to this new management class. See Backup-Archie Clients Installation and User s Guide for details on the include-exclude list. d. Actiate the policy set. e. Register or update the client nodes so that they are in the new policy domain. See Administrator s Guide for details on changing policy for clients that can use SAN dries. For details about the commands, see Administrator s Reference. The following figure displays the results of completing the preious two steps. Note: This figure does not include all the required options. Steps 2 and 3 proide more details. TSM Client Workstation Client - DATAOWNER dsm.sys file enablelanfree yes lanfreecommmethod tcpip lanfreetcpport 1500 tcpsereraddress tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com tcpport 1502 Storage Agent - STORAGNT dsmsta.opt file serername tsmsrer deconfig deconfig.out deconfig.out file set staname storagnt set stapassword xxxxxxx set stahladdress agent.tucson.ibm.com define serer tsmsrer sererpassword=xxxxxxxx hladdress=tsmsrer.tucson.ibm.com lladdress=1502 TSM Serer - TSMSRVER define serer storagnt sererpassword=fun4me hladdress=agent.tucson.ibm.com lladdress=1500 register node dataowner bak2work domain=sandomain Figure 5. 26 Configuring Deices for the Storage Agent to Access Figure 6 on page 18 shows the results of completing Step 4. Client System and Step 5. Serer on page 17 for tape deices. Step 4. Client System Note: If you are configuring a FILE Library, skip this step and proceed to Step 5. Tape Deices Perform the following: Obtain Tape Deice Information: Obtaining tape deice information in a Linux enironment is different depending on whether your enironment supports IBM deices or non-ibm deices as follows: IBM Tape Deices: After installing and loading the IBMtape deice drier for your IBM tape and SCSI tape dries and libraries, a set of special file names are aailable for each deice. To see the special file names, use the command: ls /de/ibm* The name for tape dries typically has the form: /de/ibmtapex where x is a number. The name for tape libraries typically has the form: /de/ibmchangerx where x is a number. Non-IBM Tape Deices: To use the Storage Manager deice driers, you must perform the following: 1. Verify that the deice is connected to your system, and is powered on and actie 2. Ensure that the Storage Manager deice drier package is loaded. (Depending on your system enironment you will load one of the following, either TIVsm-tsmscsi i386.rpm for 32 bit or TIVsm-tsmscsi ia64.rpm for 64 bit). Note: To load the deice drier, enter./tsmscsi from the install location of the Storage Manager deice drier. 3. Copy the two sample configuration files located in the installation directory from lb.conf.smp and mt.conf.smp to lb.conf and mt.conf, respectiely. 4. Edit the lb.conf and mt.conf files. Add one stanza (as shown in the example at the top of the file) for each SCSI target ID and LUN combination you want the deice drier to probe for supported tape dries. 5. To load the deice drier, run the tsmscsi script from the deice drier installation directory. 6. Determine the special file names for the tape dries and libraries. 16 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

The special file for each tape drie and library appears in the /de/tsmscsi directory. The tape drie special file has the form /de/tsmscsi/mtx, where x is a number. The library special file has the form /de/tsmscsi/lbx, where x is a number. To determine the names for the tape dries, issue the following command: > ls /de/tsmscsi/mt* To determine the names for the libraries issue the following command: > ls /de/tsmscsi/lb* Step 5. Serer The following proides information to help you define paths from the storage agent to the dries that are aailable to the Storage Manager serer. Paths allow a client, by means of a storage agent, access to dries in a library. The requirements are different depending on the deice you are using. Consider the following guidelines before you begin defining paths to your SAN dries: Define paths to all dries. Problems can occur if you do not define paths from the serer to each drie in a library. For example, during backup operations, all dries that hae paths can be used by storage agents backing up data. Backup operations will fail if you try to use other dries in a library that do not hae defined paths. When paths are defined for each drie in a library, backup operations wait until the next drie is aailable for the transfer of data. Note: Backup operations can fail if no mount points are found to satisfy the request. If this occurs, it is likely that all aailable dries do not hae a path to the client. If you want to limit the number of dries aailable to a node, you can use the MAXNUMMP parameter on the REGISTER NODE or UPDATE NODE command. This will limit the number of dries that are aailable for the storage agent to use on behalf of the client. Reiew tape deice names. For the same tape deice, the deice name as known to the serer will probably not match the deice name as known to the storage agent. Tape Deices Define paths on the serer using the deice names as seen by the storage agent on each client system. See Obtain Tape Deice Information on page 16. Important: Be sure that the deice names are what is seen by the storage agent on each client system. Note: The DEFINE PATH command must be issued from the serer (library manager or library client) that will manage the client s data. For example, you would issue the following: define path storagnt drie1 srctype=serer desttype=drie library=sanlib1 deice=/de/mt1 Chapter 3. Installation and Configuration 17

See the Administrator s Reference for your system platform for additional details on the DEFINE PATH command. Depending on the operating system of the Storage Manager serer, there may not be a quick way to confirm which deice names on the storage agent correspond to deice names on the Storage Manager serer without using a trial and error method. To confirm deice names, you should work with one online drie at a time, and cycle through the storage agent deice names until a successful backup can be run. For a reiew of the results of the steps that you hae just completed, see Figure 6. Disk Deices Define paths on the serer using the deice names as seen by the storage agent on each client system. For example, on the serer side, the directory, d:\tsmdata\serer1, is exported on the NFS serer running on the Storage Manager Serer machine. On the storage agent, the directory is NFS mounted as /tsmdata/serer1. Because the two directory names do not match, a path needs to be created for each file drie in the library. The following is the command issued to create the path for this scenario. In this example, file3 represents the destination file drie in the disk library with a name of disklib. define path storagnt file3 srctype=serer desttype=drie library=disklib deice=file directory="/tsmdata/serer1" For command information, see the Administrator s Reference. The following figure displays the results of completing steps three, four and fie for a tape deice. TSM Client Workstation Storage Agent deice name: /de/tsmscsi/mt1 SAN Tape Library Drie TSM Serer - TSMSRVER define drie sanlib1 drie1 define path tsmsrer drie1 srctype=serer destype=drie library=sanlib1 deice=/de/mt6 define path storagnt drie1 srctype=serer destype=drie library=sanlib1 deice=/de/tsmscsi/mt1 Step 6. Client System Figure 6. Deice information. Results of Steps 4 and 5. During this final step you will start the storage agent and erify the LAN-free configuration. 18 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Linux: Managed System for SAN Storage Agent User s Guide

Start the Storage Agent Start the storage agent by changing to the storage agent directory and issue the following command: dsmsta When the storage agent starts, it determines if the Storage Manager serer is a library client or library manager. If the serer is a library client, the storage agent defines itself to the library manager. Verify the LAN-free Configuration To erify that you hae configured your system correctly for LAN-free data moement, perform the following procedure: 1. Run a backup operation from the client. Verify that the backup is LAN-free by using a Storage Manager Administratie Command Line client to login to the Storage Manager serer and storage agent to erify the proper sessions hae been established. When LAN-free data moement is occurring, a QUERY SESSION on the storage agent should show bytes receied (displayed as Bytes Recd) for the node increasing to the total amount of data being backed up. The QUERY SESSION on the Storage Manager serer should show a ery small amount of bytes receied (metadata) for the same node. If the node s session exhibits this behaior, and you receie a message stating that the backup has been successful, you hae configured your system correctly. 2. Ensure the following if you receie a message saying that the backup has failed. Note: If you retry the backup operation after the first failure, the client attempts to use the LAN connection for data moement. The client will continue to use the LAN until the client is stopped and restarted. a. The Storage Manager serer is running. If the Storage Manager serer is not running, the storage agent will not start. b. The client, storage agent, and serer are communicating with each other as expected. c. The paths to the dries are correctly defined. d. All dries in a library hae defined paths from the serer. Determining Whether the Data Moement was LAN-free Use the following guidelines to help determine whether the data moement is using the LAN-free enironment: Monitor the QUERY SESSION output against the node that is running the LAN-free backup. Reiew the Bytes Sent and Bytes Receied. You can perform this action by using a Storage Manager administratie command-line client to login to the Storage Manager serer and storage agent to erify the proper sessions hae been established. If the node s session exhibits this behaior, the data moement is LAN-free. Issue either of the following QUERY ACTLOG commands on the serer to which the client is connected: query actlog search=storage_agent_name msgno=8337 or Chapter 3. Installation and Configuration 19
