Database Design and Normalization 5. Data Modeling with the ER Model 6. Transforming Data Models into Database Designs 7. SQL for Database Construction 8. Managing Multiuser Databases 9. Managing Databases with SQL Server 10. XML 11. Database Processing for Bus. Intel. Systems
Module I: GETTING STARTED Part 2: Introduction to Structured Query Language (Text: Chapter 2) NOTES FOR CLASS SESSION STARTING POINTS Questions to begin our deliberation 1. Why is it important to learn Structured Language (SQL)? 2. What is the difference between SQL data manipulation language (DML) statements and SQL data definition language (DDL) statements? Student Learning Objectives (Desired Outcomes) At the end of in-class and outside-class work on this topic, you should be able to: 1. Discuss the history and significance of Structured Query Language (SQL). [Comprehension] 2. Discuss the basic SQL SELECT/FROM/WHERE framework as the basis for database queries. [Comprehension] 3. Write queries in SQL to retrieve data from a single table. [Synthesis]
4. Write queries in SQL to use DISTINCT, WHERE, AND, OR, NOT, BETWEEN, LIKE, IN, IS NULL, IS NOT NULL, ORDER BY, GROUP BY, and HAVING. [Synthesis] 5. Use the built-in functions of SUM, COUNT, MIN, MAX, and AVG with and without the use of a GROUP BY clause. [Application] 6. Write queries in SQL to retrieve data from a single table but restricting the data based upon data in another table (subquery). [Synthesis] 7. Write queries in SQL to retrieve data from multiple tables using a JOIN. [Synthesis] QUESTIONS TO EXPLORE READINGS Q 1. How is SQL different from a programming language such as C++ or Java? Q 2. What are some of the constructs of AQL-92 not correctly or fully supported by Microsoft Access? Q 3. Why is it important to learn SQL instead of using Query-By-Example such as Microsoft Access Design View? Q 4. What will happen if the WHERE clause of a JOIN SQL statement is left out? PROBLEMS (Part 2; Chapter 2)
Problem 2A (In-Class Problem) NASDAQ 100 You may remember last week s problem (Problem 1) that was dealing with an investigation of any patterns in the table (NDX) containing information on the performance of NASDAQ 100 fund; the table below is small part of the table. (ChangeClose is the difference between current day s close and the prior trading day close.) NDX TClose PriorClose ChangeClose Volume TMonth TDayOfMonth TYear TDayOfWeek TQuarter January Friday January Thursday January Wednesday January Tuesday January Monday January Friday December Wednesday December Tuesday December Monday December Friday December Wednesday December Tuesday December Monday December Friday December Thursday December Wednesday December Tuesday December Monday December Friday December Thursday 4 The table has been stored as a database in MS Access 2003 (as well as in MS SQL Server 2005). This problem lets you analyze this data using SQL: Write SQL queries to produce the following results:
(a) Listing of the ChangeClose on Thursdays. (b) The minimum, maximum, and average ChangeClose on Thursdays. (c) The average ChangeClose on Thursdays grouped by TYear; show TYear in the result. (d) The average ChangeClose grouped by TYear and TMonth; show TYear and TMonth in the result. (e) The average ChangeClose grouped by TYear, TQuarter, TMonth shown in descending order of the average; you will need to give a name to the average in order to sort the result by the average. Show TYear, TQuarter, and TMonth in the result. Problem 2B (Outside-Class Problem: Team problem solution work submission due by next class; team problem solution presentation and discussion in the next class) MARCIA S DRY CLEANING Marcia s Dry Cleaning is a dry cleaning business in Dunwoody, Atlanta. She is known to provide superior customer service, which makes her stand out from the competition. Instead of resting on her laurels Marcia wants to improve her customer service even further. She wants to keep track of each of her customers and their orders so that she can provide timely useful information to the customers. One of Marcia s customer service goals is to
notify her customers that their clothes are ready via . To provide this service she has developed an initial database that include the following tables: CUSTOMER (Phone, FirstName, lastname, ) INVOICE (Number, DateIn, DateOut, TotalAmt, Phone) INVOICE_ITEM (Number, Item, Quantity, UnitPrice) The database has been implemented in MS Access ( /Data/Chapter2/Chapter_2_MDC.zip) as well as in MS SQL Server 2005 ( /Data/Chapter2/MDC%20Database%20SQL%20Script.zip ). Write and execute SQL statements to produce the following information using both Access and SQL Server 2005 database management systems. Submit a Word document that contains the captured screen shots for the results obtained. (a) Show all data in each of the three tables. (b) List the Phone, FirstName, and LastName for all customers whose second and third characters of phone number is 23. (c) Determine and display the average TotalAmt. (d) Group customers by LastName and then by FirstName.
(e) Using a subquery to show the FirstName and LastName of all customers who have had an order with TotalAmt greater than 100. Present the results sorted by LastName in ascending order and then FirstName in descending order. (f) Using a join with a subquery to show the FirstName, LastName, and TotalAmt of all customers who have had an order with an item named Dress Shirt. Present the results sorted by LastName in ascending order and then FirstName in descending order. Study Guide Chapter 2 (SG-Ch2) 7/ cw/index.html Self-Test 2 (ST2) Available at the ulearn site for the course. (Available only between the end of this session and the start of the next session)
