4 Following are performance tuning recommendations for Engine. Before making any changes please make sure you take a copy of the configuration data. It is advised to implement these recommendations during the maintenance window/scheduled downtime. Disable Engine Logging to Form Logging to file and AR Form is enabled by default in Engine at logging level SEVERE. When there are no entries found in logging.properties file for the Engine then the file and form log appenders are added dynamically by Engine. File logs of Engine can be found in <AR SERVER HOME>/AR /Logs/stdout.log (WINDOWS) and <AR SERVER HOME>/AR /Logs/ d.log (Unix). Each message logged in log file is also logged in Engine log form AR System Error Log. So logging to form is generally not useful unless you access the log form a remote machine. So it is safe and better to disable the logging to form which will reduce API calls from Engine related to logging. The logging.properties file can be found under the directory {JRE_INSTALL_DIR}/lib/ (Or you can refer to the Start.bat file on Windows or d.sh file on UNIX for the JRE which is being used.). For disabling the form logging, add or update the following entries in the logging.properties file. com.bmc.arsys. daemon.arsystemhandler.level = OFF Additionally always set the file logging level to SEVERE to reduce the file IO and better through put from Engine. Add or update logging.properties with the following parameter. By default it is set at SEVERE level only. com.bmc.arsys. daemon.level = SEVERE Non-functional Data Clean Up The said database table contains Non-Functional Data/error logs which can be purged 1) AR System Error Logs Managing Data in AR System Messages Form The inbound and outbound mails are stored in AR System Messages form. After the outbound mails are sent it is safe to delete those mails. Otherwise the data in the dataset will pile up, which will eventually impact Engine performance as the database table will be loaded and slowly increase response time. To overcome this we need to enable delete of message once sent. This is done by selecting Delete Outgoing Notification Messages to Yes on AR System Mailbox Configuration form for the configured outgoing mailboxes. PAGE 3 OF 7

6 Attachment Size The attachment sizes for inbound and outbound s will hamper performance of Engine. So the mail server should be configured to allow attachment size below the desired optimum level. Restriction on maximum attachments size can be done on extension types using com.bmc.arsys. daemon.maxattachsizefileextensions and com.bmc.arsys. daemon.maxattachsize together in Daemon.properties file. For example if you want to set maximum attachment size as 500KB for file type of JPEG then you need to do the following configuration. Note that the file size is in bytes. com.bmc.arsys. daemon.maxattachsizefileextensions = JPEG com.bmc.arsys. daemon.maxattachsize = General Recommendations There are many fixes went into SP 3 and SP4, so it is recommended to upgrade to 7604 SP4 hot fix of Engine. In certain deployments it was observed that Java Mail API took considerable time to generate message ID. It impacted the number of s processed by engine per minute. By adding the following run time parameter this issue was resolved as Java Mail API was just using this run time parameter to generate the message ID. For Windows add a new registry key under the Windows Registry path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\BMC Remedy Engine - <HOST_NAME>\ Parameters as JVM Option 4 = -Dmail.from=<USER_NAME>@<HOST_NAME > For Unix machines update d.sh file and insert the following argument after java -Dmail.from=<USER_NAME>@<HOST_NAME > Periodic purging of Messages from the database is highly recommended.
