Using an ICAN chapter-specific address instead of a personal address is advantageous for many reasons: You can give other chapter officers access to a chapter address without compromising the safety of your personal address. The officers will be able to help share the workload of fielding inquiries. If in the future you decide to pass on chapter leadership to someone else, using a chapter specific address instead of a personal address makes this transition easier. The password can easily be reset for the new leader if necessary. You will waste fewer resources. Chapter marketing materials (business cards, brochures, etc.) with the chapter-specific address can be reused if chapter officers change because the address remains the same. A chapter-specific address is generally much easier for consumers to remember than a leader's personal address. A chapter-specific address also helps present a more professional, organized image. Signature Lines The Board of Directors has adopted a policy regarding signature lines on official correspondence including letters and messages. ICAN has adopted this policy to maintain professionalism and to avoid the appearance of ICAN s association with other causes or beliefs. This policy applies to all ICAN leaders: national officers, national directors, chapter leaders, and chapter office holders. When signing an official document where you are speaking on behalf of ICAN, you must sign the document as follows: Your Name ICAN Position/Title Birth History (if you want and if it is appropriate) ICAN website address (or approved chapter website address) Promotional material approved by ICAN s Board of Directors

2 Example: Jane Doe Chapter Leader, ICAN of Town HBA2C Including extra information, such as your own business information, non-ican websites, or miscellaneous quotes on ICAN correspondence is considered mixing causes and is prohibited. This policy applies to ICAN-related s from your personal address as well, not only ICAN chapter-specific addresses. This is why having/using your ICAN chapter-specific is important. Joining the ICAN-L Yahoo! List After your chapter is official, you can access the ICAN-L Yahoo! list. All chapters must have at least one Chapter Officer reading this list regularly. The list is an invaluable place to receive support from other Chapter Leaders, find tips, and stay informed on important updates. The address for the ICAN-L Yahoo! group is: Accessing ICAN University ICAN University is currently a work in progress. The goal is to provide training and accreditation opportunities to our Chapter Leaders. As this becomes available, you will be given access to ICAN Univeristy found at: Your login and password will be given to you by the Chapter Director. You may change the password once logged in.

3 Chapter Websites New Chapters will be given space on ICAN's main website to house their own chapter websites. Existing chapters will be transferred to ICAN's website or their current website may be grandfathered in based on Board approval. The Board recognizes that some chapters have gone to great lengths to create an extensive website community. All chapters will have at minimum, a basic website with their contact and meeting information. A basic framework will be provided to each chapter. All websites must be current on ICAN logos, disclaimers and guidelines. All websites must be kept up to date. Each chapter will work with ICAN's webmaster/web team to transition or create their website. Inquiries can be directed to webmaster@ican-online.org Chapter Yahoo! Groups Chapters may have their own Yahoo Groups for their Chapter as a private place to offer more support. These groups must adhere to ICAN policies relating to social media and online groups. Additionally, your Regional Coordinator should be added/invited to the group in the instance a situation arises. Social Media Some chapters utilize free social networking sites like Myspace, Twitter, Facebook, or blogs. These are an excellent way to network with others in your area. Please be sure to keep your personal pages/blogs separate from that of your chapter s group. ICAN will not ask to censor your non-ican-related posts on your personal pages/blogs, but we do ask that you keep in mind that you are a representative of ICAN. Be sure to keep in mind that even on your personal pages/blogs, even when you are not officially wearing your ICAN hat, people who know you lead an ICAN chapter will still read it and think of you as a representative of ICAN. Facebook Facebook allows you to set up either a "page" or "group". A page works best if you do not intend to offer discussion very often. Pages are open to anyone who "likes" the page. Groups offer a more private setting and allow more control over who can be in, monitoring posts, etc. When setting up either, your Regional Coordinator should be notified and added to the group or invited to like the page. Please promote your Regional Coordinator to admin/moderator. This is a proactive measure to ensure that conversations stay on topic and do not get heated or out of hand. In the instance the chapter were to change leadership, this also ensures someone with ICAN is still able to have access to the Facebook account and set up the new leadership.

4 Off Topic Posts If you choose any of the sites to host a page to network for your chapter, please avoid off-topic posts. Off topic posts are those that do not fall under ICAN's mission. Four common topics that should be avoided are: circumcision, abortion, vaccination, and breastfeeding (as in the debate of what is best, discussing difficulty breastfeeding after a cesarean is fine). Disclaimers for Social Media Groups and Websites All areas that involve an online presence where information may be shared or discussed needs to have the following disclaimers posted. 5 Guidelines for Social Media Groups Guidelines are a set of "policies" or "limitations" on the course a conversation, information or interactions can go within an online group. This is up to each chapter to define according to the needs of their group as long as it is in compliance with ICAN's guidelines. Guidelines can change within a group as new situations arise. The purpose of any ICAN group is to provide a safe environment for mother to mother support; not to recommend or allow solicitation from birth professionals, give medical advice, discuss topics that do not align with ICAN's mission, etc. Sometimes, these are difficult to write. Discuss with your RC if you need help discerning what appropriate guidelines for your group should be. Facebook ICAN Regional Group Your ICAN Region has a Facebook group set up to support you as a member of Chapter Leadership. If you are on Facebook, you can send a friend request or your RC can friend you and add you to the group. The group is a place for announcements and support. Your RC may post links to new studies or articles, share important announcements, provide advice or instruction on situations, etc. This is also a good way to connect with your neighboring ICAN Chapters and become each others resource. It's also a great place to get encouragement and share ideas with those that have been in the same place you are.
