This month, families will be celebrating Thanksgiving with friends, family and food (and even football with some families). There is an excitement in the air with the holidays coming into full swing and waiting for the first snowfall (or wishing for no snow 1935 parade float on Broadway. These services have become such a mainstay in our lives that we sometimes take them for granted without realizing how they have come about. In 1945, Ray Rauh moved his family to the village of Metamora when he purchased the Metamora Telephone Company. The Rauh family worked hard along with their employees to bring telephone service to the residents of Metamora and Germantown Hills. The learning curve was short as this was basically new technology and the business thrived over the years as it supplied customers with great up to date phone services. In 1987 the family purchased Marseilles Telephone Company and continued to build new technology into the phone network here. Later in 1995, MTCO (a sister corporation to Metamora Telephone Co.) was formed and internet service was introduced to the area. Over the years the internet progressed from dial up to a dedicated high speed DSL connection. In January 2011, MTCO introduced the latest technology in television viewing services with the implementation of IPTV to Marseilles residents. 7 In Our Community Remembering our Nations Veterans... Appreciating Our Military Veteran s Day is always on November 11th. It is a day set aside in our nation to honor the men and women of our country who have served and protected this great land. In Marseilles we will have the AVENUE OF THE FLAGS at Riverview cemetery, weather permitting. These large flags will be flying along the roads of the cemetery from early morning until dusk. They are the casket flags that were presented to loved ones of deceased veterans and then donated to the Marseilles Memorial Association to fly on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This display has grown, and with the help of the American Legion and VFW members, scouts, and other volunteers, the flags are placed in their position of honor. It is an awesome sight. The November 11th Veteran s Day service to honor these special men and women is being planned at the Washington Street Memorial by a group of volunteers and the Marseilles Memorial Association. The street in that area will be closed off for this service. The public is invited to bring their own chairs. The city of Marseilles is proud to have several Veteran s memorials that are cared for by volunteers and the city street department. Riverview has a beautiful memorial as soon as you enter the cemetery. One of the oldest memorials is located at the corner of Washington and Main Street. This area has several commemorative stones to honor our local vets including the most recent marker that was dedicated on Memorial Day of this year to commemorate the Marseilles Veterans that served in the Civil War. Illinois Valley Cellular s River Plaza is the site of the Middle East Conflict Memorial Wall and at the entrance of the plaza is a Marine Memorial. This area also includes the Veteran s Memorial Walkway Bridges that were dedicated this Memorial Day when veterans of all ages proudly walked across the bridges to be greeted by residents and loved ones. Located at the West end of Illini State Park stands the White Oak Forest that was dedicated two years ago. Hundreds of volunteers and our city s street department work side by side to care for these sites through out the year. The city of Marseilles is also the site of a large Illinois National Guard Training Complex. Thousands of men and women arrive here to train throughout the year. There is also a large group of ROTC students that train at the site in the summer. These men and women visit our restaurants, attend special events and we appreciate how they respect our community. The American Legion Post 235 and the Marseilles VFW building stands just North of our Main Street. It is the site of so many special events and represents years and hours of hard work and dedication by so many veterans over the decades that continue to work as a band of brothers and will always be the heroes of the United States of America. Patti Smith, Mayor City of Marseilles Potluck Lunch & Bingo / Senior Assistance Day Staff from the Bridges Senior Center Satellite Office-Marseilles will be at the Marseilles American Legion, 571 Rutland St. Marseilles on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 for a Noon Potluck: Bring a dish to pass along with table service and drink for yourself. Rivershores Care Center will host and call Bingo to follow Potluck at 1pm. Staff will also be available to assist seniors with Illinois Cares RX/Circuit Breaker program, Medicare Part D, Li-Heap (energy assistance) and more. For more information, please call Bridges Senior Center at Main St. & More Plan Revealing Another reveal for the Main St. & More Mural and Legend area at 404 Main Street, Marseilles, is being planned in early November. Spectators have been earnestly watching the improvement of the space over the past weeks and months. A cement pad was recently placed in the area by the Marseilles City Workers for the benches which have been donated by Dr. Don Nickerson, Seattle Sutton s Healthy Eating, and the Ortiz- Perez families. Fencing, courtesy of Joe & Cat Evola, from Sam s Pizza, will be erected, and landscaping by Karen & Kevin Bramel is also in the works. The Main St. & More Mural was paid for with proceeds from the Main St. & More - Marseilles 2010 book that was published just prior to the city s 175th Anniversary celebration in However, money isn t the only thing that made the legend site come to be. It wouldn t have happened without the additional helping hands of many others. Coyote Cafe has stepped up to help maintain the plant & floral portion of the site. As usual, the Marseilles community comes together and willingly offers to Make the City Pretty. Less than 20 copies of the book are still available at Country at Heart Antiques, Carroll s Flowers & Gifts, Twin Oaks Savings Bank in Marseilles and the Book Mouse in Ottawa.
