Due to the advances and complexity developing, deploying and operating this mobile network will, much more than in the past, require extensive simulation and monitoring test tools. As a leader in the mobile measurement business Tektronix offers solutions to meet most of the Protocol Test challenges. In this document test applications for UMTS interfaces Iu, Iub and Iur are described. Features for 3G Mobile Units Software Monitoring and Simulation/Emulation of Signalling Protocols at the Iu, Iub, Iur Interfaces, Including Packet Encoded Protocols (PER) like RANAP, NBAP and RNSAP Powerful tools for development and test of UMTS Network Elements like Node-B, RNC and UMSC Support of two Simulation Links and one Monitoring Link Data Generation of IP Traffic on top of GTP emulation Supports Interface Boards ATM E1/T1 and ATM STM1/SONET OC3 Optical General Applications The products covered by this document are designed for the following application segments: Functional Testing of Protocol Implementations System Testing of Network Nodes Simulation of RNC, CN (SGSN/MSC) and Node-B 6 Protocol Analyzers

7 Software for K1297-G20 Protocol Tester supports functional tests in UMTS system development and system tests in system integration at the UMTS Iu, Iub and Iur interfaces. Monitoring, Simulation and Emulation functions are provided for relevant UMTS signaling protocols and user plane protocols for packet switched domain. Solutions are available for the most challenging test functions for PER encoded RANAP, NBAP and RNSAP protocols. With UMTS Iu, Iub and Iur test software, the RNC or CN at both sides of Iu interfaces as well as RNC and Node-B can be simulated and tested. The software enables telecommunication equipment manufacturers to verify the software implementation of the RNC, CN and Node-B. This will ensure the quality of the product development, minimize the development time, and reduce the risks of their UMTS projects. UMTS standards according to Release 99 (3GPP) are supported unless stated otherwise. The software packages support following test functions: Monitoring and Simulation of RANAP (TS ) Monitoring and Simulation of NBAP (TS ) Monitoring and Simulation of RNSAP (TS ) Monitoring and Simulation of MM/CC/RR/GPRSMM/SM (TS ) Monitoring, Simulation and Emulation of ALCAP (Q and Q /2) Monitoring, Simulation and Emulation of SSCOP, SSCF, MTP-3b, SCCP protocols Monitoring, Simulation and Emulation of GTP (TS ) IP Packet Generator and Comparator on top of GTP-Emulation Simulation of two physical links Monitoring of one physical link Figure 1. UMTS reference model. UMTS Reference Model The UMTS architecture can be seen as the next evaluation step of the 2G and 2.5G technologies GSM and GPRS. Thus UMTS will not replace these technologies and their network elements but extend the network architecture by 2 new components: the Remote Network Controller (RNC) and the Node B. As shown in Figure 1 these two new network elements will form 3 new UMTS specific interfaces: The Iu interface between RNC and MSC/SGSN, with the Circuit Switched (CS) and Packet Switched (PS) part The Iub interface between RNC and Node B The Iur interface between RNC s These new elements, the interfaces between them and the great number of new protocols create a huge demand for test applications. Examples of test configurations, which can be handled with the K1297-G20 UMTS solution, will be described in the next chapters. Figure 2 shows a G20, which simulates the RNC network element towards the MSC and SGSN. It depends on the test purpose, which protocol layer needs to be simulated or emulated. The message flow for the protocol to be simulated is usually defined in a simple way with the Message Sequence Chart (MSC) Tool offered by the G20 Base Software. For all layers below the simulated protocol layer Figure 2. K1297-G20 simulating a Radio Network Controller (RNC). Emulations are used, which behave according to the standards. The G20 in Figure 3 simulates a MSC towards the SGSN and the RNC. This configuration requires the appropriate GPRS packages for Gs interface simulation. Applications such as the Call Generator help to test the basic call handling. At the Iub interface CS and PS data have to be handled on a single interface. As the RNC controls the Node B and handles the complexity of the radio interface there are lots of information to be exchanged for managing the radio cells and the user equipment. The Iub interface is heavily involved in UMTS hand offs and the RLC/MAC protocols reflect the complex structure of the UMTS W-CDMA radio interface (Uu). Therefore the demands for testing on the Iub interface are extremely high. This applies also to the Iur interface, as both protocol stacks are very similar. Figure 4 shows a G20 simulating an RNC. Example recording of simulation of a relocation scenario on Iu interface. Figure 6. K1297-G20 monitoring of Iub and Iur interface. Figure 4. K1297-G20 simulating a RNC Although the K1297-G20 was designed for Simulation/Emulation purposes it is of course also possible to use the G20 as a monitoring device. Monitoring UMTS Interfaces adds some additional test challenges: as the physical layer is often an optical media (e.g. STM1 optical) it is not possible to hook the unit to an interface without disconnecting the lines between the network nodes, unless there are special monitoring points. Additionally an optical power splitter (per direction) might be necessary to allow passive monitoring. The G20 in Figure 5 monitors the complete Iu interface (Iu-CS and Iu-PS) at the same time. Figure 6 shows a G20 which monitors the Iub and the Iur interface. 8 Protocol Analyzers towards a Node B. Conformance Tests Conformance Test Suites provide automatic and complete test solutions for protocols. Test Suites for SSCOP and ALCAP with hundreds of test cases are the first of a series of suites, which have been released for testing UMTS relevant network elements. Further conformance test suites like RANAP and NBAP will follow very soon. Figure 8. Example scenario for a Node B configuration on Iub interface.

9 Characteristics The G20 UMTS software packages are fully integrated in the G20 architecture and make use of all powerful tools and options offered by the base software. The workflow is straight forward: Messages are created in the Message Building System (MBS) and stored in a message pool, a message flow is created in graphical Message Sequence Chart (MSC) or programmed in Forth or C and finally the Emulation Stack Editor (ESE) describes the connections between and contains all the parameters for linking all emulation and simulation entities. The ESE is the control center from where the user can start and stop test scenarios. Please refer to the Protocol Tester K1297-G20 Base Software Product Summary for further information. Figure 7 shows an example trace, which was recorded while a UMTS Relocation procedure was running. For this purpose 3 Network elements (Source RNC, Target RNC, SGSN) have been simulated. CDMAone Software CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is not only a technology used to transmit data via the air interface between a mobile station and a BSS (Base station system), but is also the name of the whole mobile network behind and is the fastest-growing wireless technology. CDMAone is the term for the 2nd generation of the mobile networks based on CDMA technology with priority on circuit switched voice transmission and applications like SMS (short message services). Tektronix offers following Software packages for CDMAone for the Protocol Testers K1205 and K1297-G20 to test the CDMA network: CDMA Monitoring/Simulation/Emulation SMS Monitoring/Simulation Partial Network element emulations of MSC, BSS, HLR and VLR Features of cdmaone Software Analysis of received data (filter, trigger, statistics) Simulation of cdmaone protocols Partial emulation of CDMAone network elements (MSC, BSS, HLR, VLR) Following procedures are available: MSC: Mobile Terminated Call and Clearing BSS: Mobile Originated Call and Clearing Location Update HLR: Registration Cancelation VLR: Registration Notification MS Inactive In addition to the existing Monitoring applications for CDMAone Protocols, there is now also the possibility to simulate CDMA protocols using the MBS (Message Building System) tool and to emulate the common procedures of the network elements MSC, BSS, HLR and VLR, so active and passive tests of signaling in network elements are possible.
