2 Establishing a remote connection to 1] OBJECTIVE Access, operate and manage the system using any web-enabled device (smart phone, tablet or computer) from anywhere. Optional: Accessing the system with the software requires additional minor modifications. Refer to page for the additional steps to complete the setup. 3 Establishing a remote connection to 3] SETTINGS STEP 1 SETTINGS If your system is Version 3 or higher, and your system has more than one AC22 controller, you must establish a remote connection with the MASTER AC22 controller. View the AC22 Module Properties menu to confirm which AC22 is the Master. The controller is a Master if the option is enabled/checked. The controller shown in the image below is a Master. 3

Create a new Account (click the plus sign {+} to add an account). c. Login to the account and click the Add Controller button. d. The Controller Connection window will appear. Click the Auto-Detect button to find the AC22 controller on the network. e. The Select Controller window appears and displays the AC22 controller found on the network. 4

5 Establishing a remote connection to f. Select/highlight the controller and click the OK button located at the bottom of the window. This will return you to the Controller Connection window. g. Enter admin in the Module Connection Key field. h. Communication is established with the AC22 controller when the User Login popup window appears. i. Login to the AC22 controller (Login ID: admin Password: admin). j. Wait for the AC22 controller to synchronize with the software. k. Synchronization is complete when Online is displayed at the bottom-right corner of the main window. 5

8 Establishing a remote connection to Why do I need a Dynamic DNS account? Most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) frequently change the IP address of the cable or DSL modem that connects your local area network to the internet using a technique called DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol). For internet users to access their system, they must know the IP address the ISP has provided when they want to connect to the system. The problem is that the IP address changes frequently. Dynamic DNS solves this problem. Simply create an account with a Dynamic DNS service provider that registers an unchanging host name, such as myname.dlinkddns.com. You program your network router (which is connected to the cable or DSL modem) to recognize that unchanging host name, and it automatically points to the modem s current IP address no matter what your ISP has changed it to. The Dynamic DNS service and the router continuously communicate to keep the modem s IP address up to date. To access, simply type in the host name (myname.dlinkdns.com) you created when you signed up for the account into any web browser s address bar. A shortcut or bookmark can be saved for even more convenience. 8

9 Establishing a remote connection to This document describes the dynamic DNS account setup provided by D-LINK. Refer to your router s dynamic DNS setup page to configure your dynamic DNS account. 1. Login to the router s setup menu ( ) using a web browser. 2. Click the Advanced button located at the bottom of the page. 9

10 Establishing a remote connection to 3. Click the Maintenance menu located at the top of the screen. 4. Select Dynamic DNS listed in the left side menu list. 5. Click the link to create an account for the free D-LINK dynamic DNS service. 6. Fill in the required information (user name, password host name, etc.) to create an account. 10

11 Establishing a remote connection to Many dynamic DNS providers offer their service for a very reasonable yearly fee. Ensure that your router supports the provider you select. 7. Create a Host Name to complete the account creation process. 8. In the router, enable dynamic DNS and enter the Host Name, User Name and Password of your account. 9. Click the DDNS Account Testing button to ensure communication is established between the router and the dynamic DNS service. 10. Save your settings. 11

12 Establishing a remote connection to STEP 3 - DHCP RESERVATION Advantage of a Reserved IP address vs a Static IP address Reserved IP addresses differ from static IP addresses in one significant manner: When network parameters are changed at the DHCP server, the device with a reserved IP address will be able to re-establish a connection to the network. A device configured with a static IP address may not be able to re-establish a connection to the network. A DHCP server assigns an IP address to an AC22 controller when: AC power is applied to the AC22 controller and it is connected to the network. If the AC22 controller network cable has been disconnected and re-connected. When AC power is restored to a building after a power failure in the grid if a backups is not used for the DHCP server and local area network hardware. DHCP Reservation is recommended and used in this document. Many recent network routers support DHCP reservation. However, an alternative method is to use static IP addressing instead of DHCP Reservation. 1. Login to the router s setup menu ( ) using a web browser. 2. Click the Advanced button located at the bottom of the page. 3. From the Setup page select LAN Setup and scroll down to the DHCP Reservation section. 12

13 Establishing a remote connection to 4. Enter the following information in the appropriate fields: a. Computer Name - A descriptive name (ex: and controller serial number). b. IP Address - The AC22 controller s network IP address. c. MAC Address - The AC22 controller s MAC address. * Refer to the settings noted earlier in this document on page Save your settings. Windows Server 2003 and 2008 can also be configured for DHCP reservation. 14 Establishing a remote connection to STEP 4 - PORT FORWARDING * There are many youtube videos describing how to configure port forwarding. What is port forwarding? Port forwarding is a method of making a computer (the AC22 controller in our case) on your local area network accessible via the internet. As indicated previously, the dynamic DNS service is in continuous communication with your router. We now need to tell the browser on your smart phone, tablet or computer what the IP address assigned to the AC 22 controller is on the local area network. This is accomplished using the port forwarding feature available is most routers. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) block port 80 and port 25 to combat viruses and spam Canyouseeme.org is a simple and free online utility that verifies if the port you are forwarding is blocked. Simply input the port number and click the Check Port button. Modify s Software Port and Web Port settings if the ports are blocked. 14

15 Establishing a remote connection to 1. Click the Advanced tab at the top of the screen. 2. Select the Advanced Port Forwarding Rules located in the left side menu list. 3. Activate the first available check box in the Advanced Port Forwarding Rules list. 15

Enter a Name, IP address and Private Port for the AC22 controller (shown above as - Name: _ IP address: and Private/Web Port: 80). 5. Enter 80 in the Public Port fields. 6. Select TCP in the Traffic Type to complete the configuration. 7. Save your settings. Accessing the system remotely with a web browser 1. When you are away from the Local Area Network where is installed, ensure you have access to the internet with your device (smart phone, tablet, etc.). 2. Type in the dynamic DNS account Host Name (created in Step 2) in the web browser s address bar. 3. Press Enter, OK or Go and s login page will be displayed. You can bookmark the page for ease and convenience to connect to the system in the future. 4. Enter your Login ID and Password to access the system. Connecting to over the LAN with a web browser Ensure you are connected to the Local Area Network. 2. Open a web browser and type in the local IP address of the AC22 controller. 3. Press Enter, OK or Go and s login page will be displayed. You can bookmark the page for ease and convenience to connect to the system in the future. 4. Enter your Login ID and Password to access the system.

17 Establishing a remote connection to STEP5 - REMOTE ACCESS USING SOFTWARE When configuring the software for remote access via the internet, local access (when connected to the local area network) will not function without modifying the controller s IP address settings. This simple modification is described later in this document. Router - Port forwarding Add another port forwarding rule in your router as shown below: 17

18 Establishing a remote connection to Software Controller Module Properties With the computer connected to the Local Area Network (LAN), launch the software and establish communication with the controller. 2. Access the Module Properties menu. 3. Click the Update Connection button. 4. Enter your Dynamic DNS account Host Name in the IP Address field. 5. Enter admin in the Module Connection Key field. 6. Click the OK button to save and return to the Module Properties window. 7. Click Save to exit.

When you are away from the Local Area Network, ensure you have access to the internet with your computer that has the software installed. 2. Double-click on the icon located on the desktop. 3. Select the account and enter the password for that account. 4. The User Login popup window will appear. 5. Enter your Login ID and Password (default: admin, admin) to access the system. 19

Select the account and enter the password for that account. 4. Enter your Login ID and Password to access the system. 5. Access the Module Properties menu. 6. Click the Update Connection button. 7. Enter the local IP address of the controller in the IP Address field.

The User Login popup window will appear. 12. Enter your Login ID and Password (default: admin, admin) to access the system. The D-Link DIR-605L wireless network router used in this guide supports both online dynamic DNS services and a free D-LINK DNS service. Please refer to your router for supported dynamic DNS services.
