NOW LET S GET STARTED FUNDAMENTALS OF IPV6 June 18, 2014

Bill Coward Principal Architect Cox Communications 25 years experience with Information, Telephony and Networking Technologies. Lead Architect responsible for technical leadership and direction of the IPv6 deployment at Cox. Member of the CEA IPV6 Transition Working Group and the DLNA IPV6 Task Force.

AGENDA History of TCP/IP Why IPv6 IPv6 Advantages IPv6 Anatomy IPv6 Address Types Packet Comparison IPv6 Protocols Transition Technologies Miscellaneous Whatnots

HISTORY OF TCP/IP In the early 1970 s Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn thru their work with DARPA conceptualized and spec d four versions of the TCP suite of protocols (RFC 675, v4 793): TCPv1, TCPv2, TCPv3 and IPv3 Hardware Interoperability TCP and IP were combined to create TCP/IPv4 Other versions TCP and IP were deprecated in TCP/IPv5 (aka Internet Stream Protocol or ST RFC 1819)

WHY IPV6 Devices on the Internet require a unique address. 30% of World Population 7B/2B Internet Users IPV4, 32 bits, 4.2B Unique Addresses, 1980 IPV6, 128 bits, 340 Undecillion (38 zeros, TTT) = 96 2^96 = 79TT x IPv4 addresses IPV4 is not compatible with IPV6, Really?

IPV6 ADVANTAGES RFC 2460 Scalability End-to-End Addressing (NO NAT) Auto-Configuration Multicast Routing Extension Support Built-in Security

IPV6 ANATOMY 16 bit hexadecimal characters Not case sensitive 0DB8 = 0db8 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:0004 Fully Qualified IPv6 Address 2001:db8:85a3:0:0:8a2e:370:4 Leading zeros 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:4 Zero Compression :: (only once) Loopback = 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 or ::1
