2 Typical applications A branch telephone exchange is located in the basement of a building. The nearest PC could be up to 5 to15 meters away, which is the maximum recommended distance for RS232. However, Ethernet is installed because of the existence of a network router or switch for the local intranet The worker evaluating phone bills and other account information over an intranet is located in another building in the same area. Data can be safely exchanged all over the various points on the intranet using TEA encryption. The Buffer is an independent net device, which does not require any other support hardware... Application: Tarifing phone switch locations The branch phone exchanges typically use the RS232 interface for exchange of billing data. Data transport requirements differ between the various locations.. Generally, a phone exchange will be connected to a PC with applications software that loads ongoing call data.. In this application, it is cost-effective to replace the remote PC with a dedicated buffer, which stores billing data from the phone exchanges. The buffer can be connected to the phone exchange using the RS-232 or RS-485 interface. Let's return to our example of the phone switch located in the basement. The installation of more cables, converters or flash memory for transmitting data represents extra cost. The buffer eliminates these extra costs by simply connecting the RS-232 port of the switch to the buffer's RS-232 port. The ethernet interface of the buffer is then connected to the intranet. The billing data are stored in a 512 kb flash buffer in the device. Using space compression, the data of up to 20,000 phone calls can be stored. The data stored in the buffer are accessible over the intranet using TCP/IP interfaced to the accounting application. Whenever the buffer is about 75% full, it sends an to the person responsible for running the accounting application. The screws are 80 mm apart; their diameter is 3 mm. The box can be attached with the screws into a custom L shape 1,2 mm thick. We supply sidewise L brackets as an optional accessory. Drawings of the box and the profiles are available upon request. Quick Start The device is configured over RS232 serial line using a standard serial terminal. Buffer is in the set-up mode if JP1 (placed on the PCB right next to RS-232 connector) is in the SETUP position (along with the connectors). If the JP1 jumper is in the PC position, turning on the Buffer power supply can activate SETUP with the DTR pin driven low by the PC (pin 4). The SETUP mode cannot be activated over serial line if the jumper is disconnected. Drive the DTR pin low CLR DTR to configure the buffer. Plug in the RS232, connect the power supply and communicate with the device over RS Baud 8N1 no handshake. Disconnect RS232 from connector and drive DTR high SET DTR. The buffer stays in the set-up mode because the value of this pin is influenced by other Win applications (it occurs especially in Win 95/98). We recommend disconnecting JP1 jumper to completely deactivate the SETUP mode. A PC can be connected using the supplied RS-232 LapLink cable. We recommend that you download the free Ethernet SETUP application from or use any serial terminal (e.g. TeraTerm, ProComm, HyperTerminal, Terminal). 5 If the device does not respond, verify serial port, 9600 Bd, None handshake settings. If you still meet with no success, verify the JP1 jumper position on the device board. Data transmission over the Ethernet is indicated by the LEDs. The Buffer will respond to ping if it s not in the SETUP mode. Ping response time is around 4 ms. Configuration in the SETUP mode is activated by typing the letter corresponding to the option and its value (for ex. I to setup Buffer IP address). Communication security To increase security in the TCP mode, both sides can be authorized via a 128 TEA symmetric cipher whenever connection is established. The password set on both sides will not travel over the network. This option is available only for TCP/IP connections.
