1 onfiguring the Unit 1a The NetVanta may be initially accessed and managed either via a console session or through a Telnet session. See step 1a for console session instructions. Initiating a Telnet session requires using a hub and two thernet cables (one for the P and one for the unit). The default thernet IP address is Refer to step to change Telnet session settings. Initiating a onsole Session 1. onnect a VT100 terminal (or P with VT100 emulation software) to the NetVanta ONSOL port using a - (male) to - (female) straight-through serial cable.. onfigure the OM port with the following parameters: ata Rate: 00 ata its: Parity its: None Stop its: 1 low ontrol: None. Open a VT100 terminal session. (Please refer to the appropriate VT100 terminal software documentation for detailed instructions.). Press the <nter> key.. nter enable at the > prompt.. nter the password when prompted. The default password is password. You are now at the # prompt. t the # prompt, enter config terminal to enter the global configuration mode. The configuration parameters used in the example outlined in this document are for instructional purposes only. Please replace all underlined entries (example) with your specific parameters to configure your application Technical Support 1--TRN (1---) 00L1-
onfiguring the thernet Port Parameters 1. t the (config)# prompt, enter interface eth 0/1 to access the configuration parameters for the thernet port located on the rear panel of the unit.. nter ip address to assign an IP address to the thernet port using a -bit subnet mask. If you are accessing the NetVanta via Telnet, once you change this IP address, you will lose connection to the NetVanta. You must change the IP address of your P before you can proceed. TRN recommends that you set the thernet speed and duplex to match the switch or hub it is plugged in to. or example: (config-eth 0/1)#speed 10 (config-eth 0/1)#half-duplex. nter no shutdown to activate the interface to pass data.. nter exit to exit the thernet interface commands and return to the global configuration mode. The NetVanta Network Interface Modules (NIMs) use a slot/port notation for interface identification. ll non-modular interfaces built into the base unit (e.g., the thernet port) are identified using 0 as the slot number. onfiguring the Serial Interface The following steps demonstrate configuring a serial network interface. 1. t the (config)# prompt, enter interface serial 1/1 to activate the interface configuration mode for the serial network interface.. nter serial-mode v to configure the serial interface for use with the V. adapter cable (P/N 100L1).. nter no shutdown to activate the interface to pass data. 00L1- Technical Support 1--TRN (1---)
Skip to step for PPP configuration. onfiguring the rame-relay Virtual Interface The following steps outline configuring a frame-relay virtual interface (labeled 1) using a single LI back to the corporate router (defined as LI 1). 1. t the (config)# prompt, enter interface fr 1 to create a frame-relay virtual interface labeled 1.. If the default setting of ansi was changed, enter frame-relay lmi-type ansi to configure frame-relay virtual interface 1 to use NSI (nnex ) signaling.. nter no shutdown to activate the virtual interface to pass data.. nter exit to return to the global configuration mode.. The unit has a factory default PPP 1 interface. nter the command no ppp 1 to remove this interface. reating the PV and ssigning an IP ddress 1. t the (config)# prompt, enter interface fr 1.1 to create a PV assigned to framerelay virtual interface 1. This activates the configuration parameters for the PV. Your prompt should now display (config-fr 1.1)#.. nter frame-relay interface-dlci 1 to assign LI 1 to this PV.. nter ip address to assign an IP address of for this PV using a 0-bit subnet mask.. nter exit to return to the global configuration mode.. If you are configuring the NetVanta for use in a frame-relay application and have completed this step, skip to step. The default encapsulation is R 10 or IT. Make certain the remote unit uses the same encapsulation for frame-relay. onfiguring the Virtual PPP Interface The following steps show how to configure a PPP virtual interface (labeled 1) to the corporate router. Skip to step if you are using frame-relay. 1. t the (config)# prompt, enter interface ppp 1 to create a PPP virtual interface labeled 1.. nter ip address to assign an IP address to the PPP endpoint using a 0-bit mask.. nter no shutdown to activate the virtual interface to pass data.. nter exit to return to the global configuration mode. Technical Support 1--TRN (1---) 00L1-
reating the ross-onnect 1. or frame-relay applications, at the (config)# prompt, enter cross-connect 1 serial 1/1 frame-relay 1 to connect the serial NIM to the virtual frame-relay interface (fr 1.1). or. or PPP applications, enter cross-connect 1 serial 1/1 ppp 1 to connect the serial NIM to the virtual PPP interface labeled 1. onfiguring the Routes epending on your network setup, configure your unit in one of the following ways beginning at the (config)# prompt: Scenario 1: Static Route to the ar Side/Internet ccess at Local Site 1. Set up the static route: ip route ppp 1 (or frame-relay 1.1).. Set up the default route: ip route x (i.e., address of internet router). Scenario : No Internet ccess at Local Site 1. Set up the default route: ip route ppp 1 (or frame-relay 1.1).. The internet router at the far side will need a route statement to send traffic back to this network through the NetVanta 0. The information (based on the diagram shown at the beginning of this document) is as follows: estination address: (remote LN) Subnet mask:...0 Gateway: (NetVanta 0 s thernet) 00L1- Technical Support 1--TRN (1---)
onfiguring Telnet The following steps show how to access the Telnet configuration parameters and change the password. The default password for initializing a Telnet session is password (all lower-case). or security purposes, change the password to something unique. or this example, replace the underlined word with a password of your choosing. The NetVanta supports five Telnet sessions (0-). 1. Verify that the prompt of your unit displays (config)#.. nter line telnet 0 to change the configuration parameters for the Telnet session.. nter password word to change the login password for the Telnet session.. nter exit to return to the global configuration mode. n enable security mode password must be defined before configured Telnet sessions are activated. See the following step (Step 10) for information on password configuration. 10 Setting the nable Security Mode Password 1. Verify that the prompt of your unit displays (config)#.. nter enable password word to set the enable security mode password. or. nter enable password md word to encrypt the enable password using M encryption. The enable command security level passwords are case sensitive. 11 Saving the onfiguration 1. Verify that the prompt of your unit displays (config)#.. nter exit to leave configuration mode.. nter copy running-config startup-config to save the current configuration to memory. This command may be abbreviated as copy run start.. nter exit to close the configuration session. 1 ompleting the Installation The NetVanta is now configured and operational. omplete the installation by connecting the appropriate cables to the serial and thernet networks. Please refer to the NetVanta Hardware Installation Guide for more details on pinouts and cabling. Technical Support 1--TRN (1---) 00L1-
