Before Docker Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 5
Many advantages, but Reduced Performance : due to the virtual access to resources which require a layer of hardware abstraction Resource consumption : each VM requires an OS that consumes a lot of resources (memory, CPU, etc.) Mutual access : The libraries used within applications on multiple VMs can not be shared. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 6
The solution is Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 7
Docker Containers : intermodal transport unit Process virtualization: UNIX chroot ( ) BSD Jail (1998) Parallels Virtuozzo (2001) Solaris Containers (2005) Linux LXC (2008) Docker (2013) Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 8
Docker containers Deployment of applications within containers Instead of having a standard VM duplicated to host another application Docker offer standard application containers that allow to duplicate, move, save applications on another platform Docker, on another server, in another place. Docker allows us to disregard the OS, as long as the right resources are in place. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 9
Docker containers Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 10
Docker benefits Custom containers Embed only the vital elements of the applications (application and its dependencies) and not all the libraries (nor the OS) that they do not use and / or that they can share with other applications Optimization : gain of storage space With virtualization, we need to mount an OS with several gigabytes for using an application of few megabytes. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 11
Docker benefits Less resource requirements Only one OS with Docker that allows to really optimize our consumption and host only the essential tools of our application. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 12
Docker benefits Multiple instances of the same application Launch multiple instances of the same application with different versions Ideal for developers who want to make sure their changes are taken into account, that the application is stable and functional, while comparing it with previous versions Administrator mode : no need to manage the security and network of several servers. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 13
Docker benefits Portability No need to transfer the VM The transfer of Docker container is sufficient when chaning machines. Reduced sizes of containers sizes Fast execution and launch of Docker containers Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 14
Docker images Docker images are the basis of containers. An Image is an ordered collection of root filesystem changes and the corresponding execution parameters for use within a container runtime. An image typically contains a union of layered filesystems stacked on top of each other. An image does not have state and it never changes. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 15
Docker container - A runtime instance of a Docker image, it consists of : a Docker image an execution environment a standard set of instructions - The concept is borrowed from Shipping Containers, which define a standard to ship goods globally. - Docker defines a standard to ship software. Computer Science Department. Faculté polytechnique 16
