1 Lebanese University Info Distributed Applications Programming Faculty of Science Section I Antoun Yaacoub ChatRoom with RMI (90 minutes) Info 408 Distributed Applications Programming Lab 4 We will learn to use the advanced features of RMI and understand the problems of deploying a distributed application. It is strongly recommended to make a diagram showing the relationships between different parts of an application at runtime. 1. Version 1 We will start by a simple chat application. This application consists of: (a) a chat server that includes the chat server (b) a chat client that can connect to the server and send and receive messages The principle is as follows: The chat server is a well-defined ChatRoomImpl class that implements and exposes the interface ChatRoomInterface offering a set of services. This class can be accessed remotely. The client is also a remote object because he needs to be contacted by the server. He exposes the CallBackInterface interface. Once launched, he does a lookup for the server and obtains a remote reference to the server (a stub) that implements the interface ChatRoomInterface. This interface defines a Register method that allows the client to become known by the server. public void Register(CallBackInterface CB) throws RemoteException; This method takes as parameters a remote reference for the callback. 1
2 Description of available files List of files and their usage File name CallBackInterface.java ChatRoomInterface.java Role Common Interfaces remote interface of the client (for the server callback s). remote interface of the server that the clients retrieve from the registry and allow them to Register and BroadcastMessage messages. Server ChatRoomImpl.java ChatRoomInterface implementation based on UnicastRemoteObject. The Register and BroadcastMessage methods are empty. Its implementation is the subject of a question below. Server.java ClientImpl.java Java program offering features of a chat server. This interface is not remote and represents a local view of the server. Client Java program that reads messages using System.in and displays messages using callbacks. (a) Complete the programs Client.java, CallBackImpl.java and ChatRoomImpl.java (b) Compile and execute both server and client programs. For this follow these steps: i. From the Client folder: A. javac CallBackInterface.java B. javac CallBackImpl.java C. rmic -v1.2 CallBackImpl ii. Copy CallBackInterface.class and CallBackImpl Stub.class to Server folder iii. From the Server folder: A. javac *.java B. rmic -v1.2 ChatRoomImpl iv. Copy ChatRoomInterface.class and ChatRoomImpl Stub.class to Client folder v. From the Client folder: A. javac Client.java vi. From the Server folder: A. start rmiregistry -J-Djava.security.policy=../file.policy 1234& B. java -Djava.security.policy=../file.policy Server vii. From the Client folder: A. java -Djava.security.policy=../file.policy Client 2

Launching the application in a distributed environment (a) To highlight the problems of deploying a distributed application, the server and the client should not now share the same classpath (the most common case in reality). The consequence is that we allow to RMI to download classes dynamically. For this, we must launch two servers of classes that are a very simple HTTP server capable of reading class files from a given directory. Follow the steps below to start the application. Observe what happens in each window and explain. In particular notice the two windows of ClassServer and explain who is dowloading and what. (b) Separation of class files Copy Server and Client directories from version1 and delete ChatRoomImp Stub.class from Client directory and CallBackImpl Stub.class from Server directory. (c) Launching the registry Make sure that the classpath in the command line contains nothing (i.e. set classpath=.) then start the rmiregistry from the Server folder: start rmiregistry -J-Djava.security.policy=../file.policy 1234& (d) Launching the Server ClassServer In a second command line and from the version2 directory, launch the ClassServer by pointing it to the Server classes. java classserver/classfileserver 1235 Server (e) Launching the Client ClassServer In a third command line and from the version2 directory, launch the ClassServer by pointing it to the Client classes java classserver/classfileserver 1236 client 3
4 (f) Launching the Server In a fourth command line and from the Server directory, launch the Server by specifying the security policy and the codebase, that is to say what is the URL of the HTTP server capable of serving the necessary classes in order to use this server. This is the server we started on port java -Djava.security.policy=../file.policy -Djava.rmi.server.codebase= Server (g) Launching a Client In a fifth command line and from the Client directory, launch the Client by specifying the security policy and the codebase, that is to say what is the URL of the HTTP server capable of serving the necessary classes in order to use the remote part of the client. This is the ClassServer that we have started on port java -Djava.security.policy=../file.policy -Djava.rmi.server.codebase= Client (h) Launching another ChatClient Start another client and try to communicate by typing messages. 4
