2 Introduction Apache Tomcat is an open source software implementation of the Java Servlet, JavaServer Pages, Java Expression Language and Java WebSocket technologies. Apache Tomcat powers numerous large-scale, mission-critical web applications across a diverse range of industries and organizations. If you are running Ubuntu and want to use the Tomcat servlet container, you should not use the version from the repositories. Instead you ll need to use the manual installation process that described here. Before you install Tomcat, please make sure that java is installed. Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open a Terminal window. Type the following line at the prompt and press Enter. # java version Typical Output: java version "1.6.0_45" java(tm) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_45-b26) java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build b25, mixed mode) Above output means java is installed. If java is not installed, you can do it from the manual Ubuntu Linux 14.pdf. As per the system requirement, Tomcat server can install in any server present in the same network. Before proceeding, You should check to make sure there is not another version and adjust accordingly. Copy file apache-tomcat tar.gz from Prerequisite Server folder to /opt #cd Prerequisite_Server #cp apache-tomcat tar.gz /opt #cd /opt #tar -xvzf apache-tomcat tar.gz It will extract a folder apache-tomcat Tomcat requires setting the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment variable. The best way to do this is to set it in /etc/environment and /etc/profile as follows: #gedit /etc/environment Add /opt/jre1.6.0_45/bin in front of existing line. Updated PATH looks like below : PATH=/opt/jre1.6.0_45/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games Also, add JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME at the end of the file /etc/profile : Page 2 of 9

3 #gedit /etc/profile JAVA_HOME=/opt/jre1..6.0_45 CATALINA_HOME=/opt/ /apache-tomcat export CATALINA_HOME Set executable permission for all files/folders under bin subfolder #cd /opt/apache apache-tomcat #chmod 0755./bin R REBOOT THE SERVER At this point you can start tomcat by just executing the script catalina.sh in the tomcat/bin folder. #cd /opt/apache-tomcat #./bin/catalina.sh start Typical output: root@ubuntu:/opt/apache-tomcat #./bin/catalina.sh start Using CATALINA_BASE: /opt/apache-tomcat Using CATALINA_HOME: /opt/apache-tomcat Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/apache-tomcat /temp Using JRE_HOME: /opt/jre1.6.0_45 Using CLASSPATH: /opt/apache-tomcat /bin/bootstrap.jar It will start the Tomcat server, we can also check by using: #netstat -atn grep 8080 tcp6 0 0 :::8080 :::* LISTEN Now we need to setup the user account. Finally we need to create an user accounts to secure and access admin/manager pages. Edit conf/tomcat-users.xml file in your editor and paste inside <tomcat-users> </tomcat-users> tags #cd /opt/apache-tomcat #nano conf/tomcat-users.xml Add below two lines before last line. <role rolename="manager-gui"/> <user username="admin" password="admin" roles="manager-gui" "/> Save and Exit Page 3 of 9

4 Now stop tomcat service # cd /opt/apache-tomcat #./bin/catalina.sh stop Typical Output: root@ubuntu:/opt/apache-tomcat #./bin/catalina.sh stop Using CATALINA_BASE: /opt/apache-tomcat Using CATALINA_HOME: /opt/apache-tomcat Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/apache-tomcat /temp Using JRE_HOME: /opt/jre1.6.0_45 Using CLASSPATH: /opt/apache-tomcat /bin/bootstrap.jar Again restart tomcat service #cd /opt/apache-tomcat #./bin/catalina.sh start In above configuration I have used username=admin and password=admin, you can make the changes as per your choice. Then we need to stop/start the Tomcat service. To test whether apache tomcat web server is running, browse following url: It will show default apache tomcat server home page. See the Administration Section in the left column. Click on Tomcat Manager It will asks for username and password. Use below username and password. Username: admin Password : admin Page 4 of 9

5 After successful authentication, following screen will appear. Scroll down in the same page, Refer to the following figure. You will see section Deploy. Go to another sub section WAR file to deploy. Browse the file corevmsweb.war, richvmsweb.rar or basevmsweb.rar file from the web folder and then click on Deploy. After successful deployment, web application for ivms server will be ready. Additional installation Step I: By default your linux workstation comes with Firefox. Please use this firefox as IVMS web client. To see live camera view, need to install VLC player along with firefox plugins. To install VLC and necessary plugins, use following commands from terminal # sudo apt-get update Page 5 of 9

6 # sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-data browser-plugin-vlc Step II: To open web, need Firebox Browse, the following url ip>:8080/<war file name> This will open home page. See the following screen. Enter Username, Password and VMS IP to access the VMS in Browser. Please see representative snapshots for the below operations. 8 Setup for Automatic Startup of tomcat server To make tomcat automatically start during boot up the computer, you can add a script to make it auto-start and shutdown. #gedit /etc/init.d/tomcat Now paste the following : # Tomcat auto-start # export JAVA_HOME=/opt/jre1.6.0_45 case $1 in start) sh /opt/apache-tomcat /bin/startup.sh ;; stop) sh /opt/apache-tomcat /bin/shutdown.sh ;; restart) sh /opt/apache-tomcat /bin/shutdown.sh sh /opt/apache-tomcat /bin/startup.sh ;; esac exit 0 You need to make the script executable by running the chmod command: #chmod 755 /etc/init.d/tomcat The last step is actually linking this script to the startup folders with a symbolic link. Execute these two commands and we should be on our way. #ln -s /etc/init.d/tomcat #ln -s /etc/init.d/tomcat /etc/rc1.d/k99tomcat /etc/rc2.d/s99tomcat Tomcat should now be fully installed and operational.
