The Abstract Factory pattern should be used when a system should be independent of how its products are created, composed and represented.... a system should be configured with one of multiple families of products.... a family of related product objects is designed to be used together, and you need to enforce this constant.... you want to provide a class library of products, and you want to reveal just their interfaces, not their implementations. 18 Lecture 19: Facade and Adapter Pattern Name : Facade Classification : Structural Intent : Provide a unified interface to a set of interfaces in a subsystem. 21 Lecture 19: Facade and Adapter Pattern Name : Adapter Classification : Structural Also known as : Wrapper Intent : Convert the interface of a class into another interface clients expect. Adapter lets classes work together that couldn t otherwise because of incompatible interfaces. April 5, 2004 Lecture 24 Comp 303 : Second Midterm Review Page 21
22 Lecture 19: Facade and Adapter The Adapter pattern should be used when you want to use an existing class, and its interface does not match the one you need.... you want to create a reusable class that cooperates with unrelated or unforeseen classes, that is, classes that don t necessarily have compatible interfaces.... you need to use several existing subclasses, but it s impractical to adapt their interface by subclassing every one. 25 Lecture 20: Flyweight The Flyweight pattern s effectiveness depends heavily on how and where it s used. Flyweight should only be used when all the following are true: An application uses a large number of objects. Storage costs are high because of the sheer quantity of objects. Most object state can be made extrinsic. Objects can be replaced by few shared objects once the extrinsic state is removed. The application doesn t depend on object identity. 27 Lecture 21: Chain of Responsibility Pattern Name : Chain of Responsibility Classification : Behavioral Intent : Avoid coupling the sender of a request to its receiver by giving more that one object the chance to handle the request. Chain the receiving objects and pass the request along the chain until an object handles it. April 5, 2004 Lecture 24 Comp 303 : Second Midterm Review Page 27
28 Lecture 21: Chain of Responsibility Use Chain of Responsibility when more than one object may handle a request, and the handler isn t known ahead of time.... you want to issue a request to one of several objects without specifying the receiver explicitly.... the set of objects that can handle a request should be specified dynamically. 30 Lecture 22: Command Pattern Name : Command Classification : Behavioral Also Known As : Action, Transaction Intent : Encapsulate a request as an object, thereby letting you parameterize clients with different requests, queue or log requests, and support undoable operations. 31 Lecture 22: Command Use Command when you want to parameterize objects by an action to perform. In procedural languages, this would be called a callback function.... specify, queue and execute requests at different times.... support undo/redo.... support logging of changes so that they can be reapplied in case of a system crash (transaction).... structure a system around high-level operations built on primitives operations.
