JQuery discussion - Hours spent: 1.5 hrs. - Things we have discussed and learned together. o Basic understanding of JQuery, what JQuery is and we can start using it. o Basic functionalities of JQuery: selecting DOM element, manipulating DOM element using JQuery. o Practicing JQuery: using JQuery, we practiced manipulation of DOM elements, such as css styles and contents. B. Other JavaScript libraries - Hours spent: 2 hrs - Things we have discussed and what I have taught. o Chart.js: I could find this useful JavaScript library for displaying various types of charts. Since I have experience of showing pie chart and bar charts on HTML5 1

3 canvas using this JavaScript plugin, I could give him tutorials on how to use those JavaScript libraries. o ScrollMagic: This JavaScript library makes it easier to manipulate UI based on scroll position of the page. I am using this library to make the first screen of my webpage dynamic with animated storytelling. I showed him what is required to use ScrollMagic and introduced him to the couple examples and we walked through the sample codes for using ScrollMagic. C. CakePHP framework - Hours Spent: 1.5 hours. - Things we have discussed and learned o First, we learned the basic concept of MVC and how CakePHP makes it easy for us to incorporate MVC to our websites. o We learned the connection between MySQL database and CakePHP and practice baking MVC from existing database tables. o We created a static webpage that does not use any model or its own controller. D. Webpage feedback - Hours Spent: 1 hours. - Things I could give feedback on. o By using HTML5 validator, I could point him some of the errors that his webpage contains. o I could suggest some style changes for better readability of the code. II. Arieska A. CSS Styling - Hours Spent: 3 hours - Things that I could explain o I gave basic explanation on how CSS style works with HTML. 2

4 o We practiced different styling including inline styles and style on a separate CSS file. o We experienced how CSS style can be very tricky when it comes to the cross browsing experience. B. MySQL - Hours Spent: 2hours - Things that I could explain and discuss o We discussed the purpose of the database and how it is used, where it is used and why it is used. o We created table, manipulated table, and inserted and modified data in the table. We tried this exercise by phpmyadmin and both command line interface of MySQL. III. Reflection A. What went well - Since Wataru and I were on a similar skill level when it comes to PHP and JavaScript, we had different strengths on different subjects. Since he is taking JavaScript class, he had better understanding on the JavaScript itself, so he could help me on fundamentals of JavaScript. On the other hand, since I had more experience on using different types of JavaScript libraries, I could explain him what are available and how to use them. - With Arieska, by explaining MySQL, I actually learned a lot, and gained a better understanding on the MySQL fundamentals and data. In addition, through studying CSS together, I learned various new techniques including having multiple classes and subclasses. I could also learn styles that could possibly cause issues on cross browsing. B. What did not go well - Wataru and I both had trouble when it comes to CakePHP. Since we were both new the CakePHP and MVC, how CakePHP works seem too confusing for us. We managed to 3

5 have pages and different controls, yet we feel that we are still do not fully understand how everything works in CakePHP framework. - When I practice MySQL, with Arieska we wasted a long time as something went wrong during the setup. Even though it was a simple thing, it took us long time to figure out what the problem was. C. Future improvement - When we the group work, we can discuss what we are going to learn for the group work time, and we can either study beforehand, or invite someone who is an expert in that area. - When we study something that we are not familiar with, we should consider having a backup plan in case the study does not go as well as planned. 4
