1 Week 13 Thursday (with Page 5 corrections) Quizzes: HTML/CSS and JS available and due before 10 pm next Tuesday, May 1 st. You may do your own web research to answer, but do not ask classmates, friends, or other. Can complete multiple times, but may get different questions. Highest score is kept. Team Project: Tournament-Bracket (A-Team 100 pts) Milestone #3: due before 10pm Thursday, May 3 rd For milestone #3, also submit a screenshot of your GUI once it is launched. Milestones #1 and #2 are being graded. 3 Media Queries FYI ONLY not on final exam 1. Create multiple sets of styles 2. Add code to query what type of device 3. Select the style set accordingly Design for smallest device first. Choose breaks in the content to be on their own "page" based on content. Identify where content hits a point where it could adapt to take advantage of a wider width. Write media queries' widths in ems, not pixels so layout will adapt to font size changes in addition to screen widths. To calculate the width in ems, divide the target width in pixels by default font size in pixels. For example: phone width of (320px) divided by 16px (the default font size) = (20em). Use min-width breakpoints that build on top of the mobile styles. The first breakpoint applies layout adjustments on top of the standard mobile styles so these can be fairly lightweight. Additional min-width breakpoints can be added for even wider screens that each build on the previous breakpoint styles. To override framework styles only for smaller screens, use a max-width breakpoint instead. This allows you to constrain your style overrides to only apply below a certain screen width. Above this width, all the normal styles will apply so this is good for certain types of overrides. <style>.example { padding: 20px; color: white; /* Extra small devices (phones, 600px and down) only screen and (max width: 600px) {.example {background: red; /* Small devices (portrait tablets and large phones, 600px and up) only screen and (min width: 600px) {.example {background: green; /* Medium devices (landscape tablets, 768px and up) only screen and (min width: 768px) {.example {background: blue; /* Large devices (laptops/desktops, 992px and up) only screen and (min width: 992px) {.example {background: orange; </style> <p class="example">resize the browser window to see how the background color of this paragraph changes on different screen sizes.</p> Copyright 2018 Deb Jim Skrentny CS 400 (S18): W13R - 3
4 Web Frameworks Provide a library of styles and JavaScript that are standard and ready to use Can download the frameworks or link to the required files online JavaScript is a programming language allows users to interact with and control the page content syntax similar to Java Reference Strings objects with properties and methods use single or double quotes, escape "\'" "JavaScript".length.toUpperCase().toLowerCase().trim() Numbers single type for integer and decimal values literal and expressions var x = ; x = 1 + 1/2; x += 3.14 * 2 + (-7-3); Booleans var lighton = true; lighton = false; Operators + - * / ( ) = + is add or concatenate Copyright 2018 Deb Jim Skrentny CS 400 (S18): W13R - 4

7 Forms get information from the user and process on server action determines where to send form information target determines how to display response submit responses to the script using get or post // php tutorial <form action="/action_page.php" method="get" target="_self"> First name:<br><input type="text" name="firstname" value="mickey"><br> Last name:<br> <input type="text" name="lastname" value="mouse"><br><br> <input type="submit" value="submit"> </form> Form action: GET vs POST Notes on GET: (from w3c) Appends form-data into the URL in name/value pairs The length of a URL is limited (about 3000 characters) Never use GET to send sensitive data! (will be visible in the URL) Useful for form submissions where a user wants to bookmark the result GET is better for non-secure data, like query strings in Google Notes on POST: POST has no size limitations, and can be used to send large amounts of data. Form submissions with POST cannot be bookmarked Use POST if the form data contains sensitive or personal information. POST does not display info in address Copyright 2018 Deb Jim Skrentny CS 400 (S18): W13R - 7
