Quick Start Guide Bar Code Fonts for the Macintosh Bitstream s Bar Code font collection includes fonts for the following bar code standards. Each of these fonts come with a utility to create and format bar codes. POSTNET (ZIP Code). The U.S. Postal Service developed POSTNET (POSTal Numeric Encoding Technique) to encode ZIP Code information on U.S. letter mail. The bar code encodes a standard five-digit ZIP Code, a nine-digit ZIP+4 Code, or an eleven-digit delivery point code. EAN/UPC (includes UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8/JAN-8, EAN-13/JAN-13, Bookland/ISBN, ISSN). Developed by the European Article Numbering Association (EAN) and the Uniform Code Council (UCC), the EAN/UPC bar code system tracks consumer products and their shipments. The bar codes are a fixed length, continuous symbol using four element widths to encode numeric information only. Code 39. Also known as Code 3 of 9. Code 39 is an alphanumeric bar code for tracking inventory. The symbol can be as long as you need. Code 128. Code 128 bar codes can encode all 128 ASCII characters using a compact format. The symbol can be as long as you need. Interleaved 2 of 5. Based on a 2 of 5 Code, Interleaved 2 of 5 is a high density code. The encoding of the digits is interleaved, with the first number encoded in the bars and the next encoded in the spaces. It is used in the warehouse, medical, and health care industries. The following bar code symbologies do not include a utility for creating the bar code. Format the characters within your application using the bar code fonts. Codabar. Also known as USD-4, NW-7, or 2 of 7 Code. Codabar is a numeric code with start and stop bars. It is used to track inventory especially by blood banks, photo finishing centers, and overnight delivery services. MSI-Plessey. Also known as Modified Plessey code, or MSI Code. MSI-Plessey is a numeric-only, continuous code based on a straight binary encoding method. It is used primarily for inventory tracking systems and to mark shelves in the grocery industry. 2 of 5 (non-interleaved). 2 of 5 is a numeric-only code that uses width-modulated bars for each character.

POSTNET Use the POSTools utility that ships with the POSTNET/ZIP Code font to create a POSTNET bar code. Use POSTools to create bar codes for the following: five-digit ZIP Codes nine-digit (ZIP+4) ZIP Codes eleven-digit delivery point codes The POSTools utility also comes with FIM A, B, and C symbols (Facing Identification Marks) in both EPS format (encapsulated PostScript) and TIFF (tag image file format) to use with courtesy and business reply mail. Always use the FIM symbols at their original sizes. Do not scale the symbols. For complete information about POSTNET standards, contact your local U.S. Post Office or visit their Web site at KWWSZZZXVSVJRY. To create a POSTNET bar code 1. Open Bitstream POSTools. 2. In the ZIP Code box, enter the ZIP code or delivery point code. Type five, nine, or eleven digits. 3. Click OK. The characters that make up the bar code appear in the Bar Code box. 4. Click Copy. 5. Open the document where you want to include the bar code, and paste the bar code characters into it. 6. Format the bar code characters using the ZipCodeBarcode-BT font on the Font menu. Always set the font size to 10 points. You cannot scale POSTNet bar codes. Note: You should make sure your bar code scanner can read a bar code you create. POSTNET 5

EAN/UPC Use the UPCTools utility that ships with the UPC bar code fonts to create the various types of UPC bar codes. UPC bar codes are used on many different consumer products. With UPCTools, you can create six types of UPC bar codes. UPC Version A UPC Version E EAN-13/JAN-13 EAN-8/JAN-8 Bookland (ISBN) ISSN For information about UCC standards and to obtain a manufacturer s number, visit the UCC Web site at KWWSZZZXFFRXQFLORUJ. Using UPC Bar Code Fonts The UPC bar code font collection comes with several different fonts that allow you to format the bar code symbol to different specifications. To create a full-height symbol, use the Tall fonts with a font size of 73 points. To create a half-height symbol, use the Half fonts with a font size of 36 points. You can scale UPC bar codes between 80% and 200% of the full size. For Tall fonts, that translates into font sizes between 59 and 146 points. For Half fonts, you can use font sizes between 29 and 72 points. 6 Bar Code Fonts for Windows

Additional Characters for UPC/EAN Bar Code Fonts The UPC/EAN fonts include some additional characters. You cannot type the additional characters in UPCTools. Instead, type these characters after you paste the bar code character string from UPCTools into your document, but before you format it with the UPC font. Characte r Symbol Usage } Provides a human-readable number for the number system 3 when creating bar codes for pharmaceutical items. Also called N above 3. { For Version A, Version E, and EAN symbologies. Provides the right guard bar without the.117" gap between the main symbol and the supplemental bars. Provides a human-readable digit for the number system 3 without the N. When using Tall fonts, this provides a symbol to preserve the right clear zone on a Bookland bar code. When using Half fonts, this preserves the right clear zone by providing a space but no readable characters. _ (underscore) Provides a space the width of the gap between the symbol and the supplemental bars. Use this character to preserve this space when you are scaling the bar code. EAN/UPC 9

Interleaved 2 of 5 Interleaved 2 of 5 is a popular bar code format in the shipping, warehouse, medical, and health care industries. It only encodes numeric information. It is similar to regular 2 of 5 code, except the bars and spaces are interleaved meaning the first digit is encoded using bars. the second using spaces. Each symbol begins with a quiet zone, a clear space with no bars, and a start bar. It ends with a stop bar and another quiet zone. Because the information is interleaved, this bar code does not require an intercharacter space, which makes the symbol much more compact. To create an Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code 1. Open Bitstream I2of5Tools. 2. Type the Interleaved 2 of 5 number in the box. 3. Click OK. I2of5Tools enters the characters in the bar code box. 4. On the Edit menu, choose Copy to copy the bar code characters. 5. Open the document where you want to include the bar code, and paste the characters into the document. 24 Bar Code Fonts for Windows

6. Format the bar code characters using one of the Interleaved 2 of 5 fonts. Using a font size of 90 points creates a full-size symbol. To resize the symbol, use a different point size. You can create readable characters using the font OCR-B-Digits-BT. Font Name Description Sample Interleaved 2of5- BT Creates full width bars Interleaved 2of5- Thin-BT Creates bars that have been narrowed by 5 mils to compensate for press gain if ink spread is a consideration OCR-B-Digits Creates numeric, readable characters Note: You should make sure your bar code scanner can read a bar code you create. Interleaved 2 of 5 25

Codabar You can create a Codabar bar code within an application. You do not need a separate utility to create it. While a Codabar bar code does not use an automatic check digit, some Codabar users create their own methods to calculate a check digit. Always make sure your bar code scanner can read a sample bar code correctly. To create a Codabar bar code 1. In your application, type the information you want to encode. Codabar can encode the following characters: WKHQXPEHUVWKURXJK WKHV\PEROV $%&'IRUWKHVWDUWDQGVWRSEDUV Always begin and end the sequence with a start and stop bar character. The four different start and stop bar characters allow the bar code to identify multiple product databases. For example, to encode the number, type $$. 2. Select the characters you typed. 3. Format the selection using the Codabar BT font on the Font menu. 4. To change the size of the bars, adjust the font size. To make bars that are 1/3" or 1/2", set the font size to 24 or 36 points respectively. To make the bars taller without making the symbol wider, stack two bar code symbols on top of each other. Format them using the same bar code font and the same font size. Adjust the leading (line spacing) so that the bars appear to run together. Note: You should make sure your bar code scanner can read a bar code you create. 26 Bar Code Fonts for Windows

MSI-Plessey You can create an MSI-Plessey bar code within an application. You do not need a separate utility to create it. To create an MSI-Plessey bar code 1. In your application, type the information you want to encode. MSI-Plessey accepts the following characters: WKHQXPEHUVWKURXJK WKHV\PEROVDQG!IRUWKHVWDUWDQGVWRSEDUV Always begin and end the sequence with a start bar (<)and stop bar (>). For example, to encode the number, type!. You can include up to 14 digits between the start and stop bars including one or two check digits. MSI-Plessey symbols may include check digits using two methods: Modulus 10 or Modulus 11. Your scanning software determines how many check digits are required and which method is used to calculate them. 2. Select the characters you typed. 3. Format the selection using the MSI-Plessey-BT font on the Font menu. Note: Always make sure your bar code scanner can read a bar code you create. MSI-Plessey 27

2 of 5 You can create a 2 of 5 bar code within an application. You do not need a separate utility to create it. To create a 2 of 5 bar code 1. Format them using the same bar code font and the same font size. Adjust the leading (line spacing) so that the bars appear to run together. Note: Always make sure your bar code scanner can read a bar code you create. 28 Bar Code Fonts for Windows
