About This Manual This document represents the User Guide for the Blackhawk FlashBurn product. The Blackhawk FlashBurn utility is a module that fit into a personal computer to allow hardware engineers and software programmers to program flash applications on DSP s via standard command prompt. This guide contains some text paragraphs that are very important for proper device functioning and for preventing the Blackhawk FlashBurn files and project target board from being corrupted. 5 Introduction Introduction Overview The Blackhawk FlashBurn (BHFlashBurn) v2.0 utility is designed for use with TI C2000 digital signal processors (DSP s) with on-chip flash. BHFlashBurn v2.0 is compatible with the Texas Instruments C2000 on-chip API flash plug-in utilities. Code Composer Studio (CCStudio) Integrated Development Environment (IDE) debug tool is not needed for operation. However, you will need CCStudio to compile and link your code or the supplied examples for use with this program. The examples provided with this utility include pre-built executable COFF (.out) files. BHFlashBurn v2.0 and the Blackhawk Emulator drivers are compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista. 6 Introduction What s included The Blackhawk FlashBurn v2.0 software package contains the following: 1. Executable (base programming files) 2. Example Flash Projects The following example projects are provided for certain DSK/EVM boards and meant to be used as a reference for using the utility and setting up a Code Composer Studio flash project for your target board. You do not need Code Composer Studio installed to use the OUT files provided, but they do require that you have the specific target board on which the examples are designed to run. These examples blink the target board s LED (or LED s), which is useful to help determine if the flash is running correctly (LED s blinking), or erased correctly (LED s not blinking). 7 Introduction Requirements System Hardware and Software Requirements The following are general requirements needed to install BHFlashBurn: Minimum Configuration 233 MHz or faster Pentium or compatible 50 MB of free hard disk space 256 MB of RAM SVGA (640x480) color display Local CD-ROM drive Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista Recommended Configuration 512 MB of RAM 100 MB of free hard disk space SVGA (1024x768) color display 2.0 GHz or faster Pentium or compatible Installing the BHFlashBurn v2.0 utility for Windows 2000/XP/Vista Before installing the BHFlashBurn v2.0 utility, please ensure that the PC has free hard drive space available. NOTE In order to install BHFlashBurn v2.0 software or new devices, the user must have administrator privileges. Blackhawk FlashBurn Utility Requirements 7

8 Installation Procedures Installation Procedures Software Installation The BHFlashBurn v2.0 disk contains a setup executable that will install all the necessary files to your computer. If the application that installs the files does not start when the CDROM is inserted into the computer s CDROM drive, please follow the directions on the media for starting the setup executable. If you downloaded the software from our web site, please follow the directions included with the distribution. 10 Installation Procedures Emulator Installation Please use care when handling delicate electronic equipment. Caution is necessary to minimize ESD (electro-static discharge) which can damage electronic components. Whenever handling this emulator, please be sure that your environment is ESD controlled and proper materials and practices are employed such as static straps and mats. or Figure 8 Installing JTAG Emulator BHFlashBurn v2.0 is tested and supported for the Blackhawk USB510L and USB2000 JTAG Emulator models. For this documentation, the BH-USB510L has been used for all examples and references. The USB2000 command will be similar. This guide assumes that the user has the following hardware installed and configured on the development computer: JTAG Emulator JTAG Emulator Device Drivers Installed with the USCIF Installed with the Target board with supported C2000 class TI DSP Compiled COFF (.out) file to be loaded into the DSP s Flash For reference on emulator and emulator driver installation, please refer to the emulator s installation guide located in the Docs subfolder of this package: C:\Program Files\Blackhawk\Flashburn_v2\Docs, where Program Files is the root location chosen for the software installation. 11 Installation Procedures Emulator Hardware Considerations Because the Blackhawk JTAG Emulator is an electronic device that directly connects a computer to your target DSP system, it is important to follow established procedures in the safe handling of electronic devices. Basic precautions regarding static electrical discharge and other electrical safety precautions should be followed when connecting or disconnecting the Blackhawk JTAG Emulator to and from the target DSP system or any time electronic devices are handled. If you are unfamiliar with these procedures, consult with a technician. Recommended Connection Procedure 1. Insure you are grounded, and have eliminated the potential for static electrical discharge. 2. Remove power from the target DSP system. 3. Connect the Blackhawk JTAG Emulator to the target system using the keyed JTAG cable assembly that is supplied with the unit. Be sure to check cable orientation. 4. Apply power to the target DSP system. Recommended Disconnection Procedure 1. Insure you are grounded, and have eliminated the potential for static electrical discharge. 2. Remove power from the target DSP system. 3. Disconnect the keyed JTAG ribbon cable from the target DSP system. Blackhawk FlashBurn Utility Emulator Installation 11

12 API Description The Flash API is a simple-to-use interface to the flash programming algorithms. It consists of well documented function calls that the client application calls to perform flash specific operations. In a layered view of the system, the flash API can be seen as a layer which abstracts complex functionality. The flash API provides a simple way to use the flash memory core, registers and algorithm functions. Figure 9 Flash API Organization This helps abstraction of the flash memory details from the application, and leads to better organization of the system. TI provides flash algorithms for performing the operations such as Clear, Erase, and Program on the LF240x Controllers. Using TI supplied algorithms allows you to focus on your application, and frees up developer time to concentrate on your value proposition. The flash API has been written to be easy to integrate into client applications. This means that you are freed up from managing complex timing requirements and verification levels, to focus on getting your application done faster. 13 Command Usage The BHFlashBurn v2.0 utility is command line driven, and can be used with user created batch files, or by typing the command manually into a DOS window. The following steps need to be taken to use the utility: 1. Open a Windows Command prompt. You can do this by: a) clicking on Windows Start button, then b) choosing the Run menu option and c) entering cmd in the dialog box. 2. Change directory to the BHFlashBurn v2.0 utility installation location. The default location is \Program Files\Blackhawk\Flashburn\bin 3. The BHFlashBurn v2.0 utility can be started using the following syntax and options below in Table 1. bhflashburn <options> <alg-file>.out [<coff-file>.out] options -d <dvr> GTI driver file-name (required) -f <dat> Board data file-name (required) -p <port> Emulator port number -n <tgt> Target CPU name or index (default 0) -e[:<pt>] Erase Flash, <opt> -- erase options (default 3FF) -c <oscclk>[x<pllcr>] Clock Configuration (default 20x10) C28xx only -v Verify data after loading -z Zero-fill BSS sections -r Reset CPU -q[-] Quiet mode, "-" will enable all prints -h Command usage This screen <alg-file>.out Specific flash algorithm (.out file) <coff-file>.out Executable file to program into target DSP on-chip flash Table 1 - BHFlashBurn v2.0 Command Usage and Options Blackhawk FlashBurn Utility Command Usage 13

15 Common Errors The following screenshots demonstrate common output errors produced by the command line utility: 1. SC_ERR_CTL_PORT This is an error that is typically caused by an emulator that has not enumerated with Windows, or exists at a different I/O port. Sample error results are shown in Figure 10, and you can diagnose this error by checking the following: a. Reset the emulator connected to your development machine. b. Verify that the emulator is shown (enumerated) in the Blackhawk control panel. Figure 10 No Emulator Connected Error 2. SC_ERR_CTL_CBL_BREAK_FAR This error is typical when the emulator is not connected to a target board s JTAG connector. You can check the following: a. Check all cable connection is secure between the emulator and the target. b. Power cycle the target and the emulator. Figure 11 No target detected Error Blackhawk FlashBurn Utility Common Errors 15

16 3. Error <-2092> This is an error generated by the TI s USCIF driver. This error results when a target is not powered when used by the Bhflashburn v2.0 utility. a. Check all cable connection is secure between the emulator and the target. b. Power cycle the target and the emulator c. Verify target power. Figure 12 Target is not powered Error 4. SC_ERR_LCK_TIME This is an error generated by the TI s USCIF driver. This error results returned when the emulator is already opened by another process (it is possibly hung). This can happen if CCStudio is running in parallel with this utility. a. Power cycle the target and the emulator b. Reboot Development machine. 5. SC_ERR_CTL_NO_TRG_CLOCK This error is reported when the emulator cannot sense a return test clock signal (RET_CLK) on pin 9 of the TI JTAG header. a. Check all cable connection is secure between the emulator and the target b. Verify that the target board is routing the test clock (TCK) signal on pin 11 to pin 9. If this is an OMAP or Davinci based board, RET_TCK may be supplied from the RET_TCK pin on the device, and not routed from header pin 11. Blackhawk FlashBurn Utility Common Errors 16

17 Appendix A. Flash Code Examples Using BHFlashBurn v2.0 with F24xx Devices The following section includes examples for using this utility with LF24xx target devices. LF2407 EVM and LF2407A DSK Examples The F24xx Device examples section is based on the document and examples from the Texas Instruments Getting Started in C and Assembly Code with the TMS320LF240x DSP SPRA0755b. This package is downloadable from TI website. The SPRA0755b provides an example that can demonstrate flash coding for the F24xx DSP, and also can be used as a base template for user code, taking into consideration the special setup needed for programs running within the flash and not the RAM on the DSP. In addition you can test the modified example_c.c file for a bootable routine to sequence the led s on the board for 6 seconds, using an ISR with Timer2. (Or blink DS2 on the ezdsp 2407 board) To flash your F2407 EVM board using the.out file, perform the following steps: 1a. Verify the Jumper configuration on your LF2407A EVM board Jumper 5 (2-3) Enabled Flash Programming Jumper 6 (2-3) Microcomputer mode Bootable Flash Enabled 1b. Verify the Jumper configuration on your ezdsp TMS320LF2407 board Jumper 3 (2-3) Enabled Flash Programming (Vpp) Jumper 4 (2-3) Microcontroller mode Bootable Flash Enabled 2. 21 Modifying F24xx examples with Code Composer Studio Although the Utility comes with a pre-compiled.out file that can be used as-is with the BHFlashBurn v2.0 utility, users that wish to modify the project and recompile their own program, can use CCStudio. NOTE The BHFlashburn v2.0 Utility is self contained, and only requires a COFF file to be loaded into the target board. 1. Setup CCStudio for use with the emulator and F24xx target board. 2. Open the project, example_c.pjt, in CCStudio. 3. Load C:\CCStudio_v3.3\cc\gel\f2407.gel file, if not already specified in CCSetup. 4. Rebuild the project. If modifying any source code, include file, or linker parameter, please refer to the SPRA0755b documentation. 5. Follow the Command Usage section to program the.out file into your F2407 EVM board. 23 Using BHFlashBurn v2.0 with F28xx Devices F2812 DSK Example The F28xx examples section is based on the Texas Instruments document, Running an Application from Internal Flash Memory on the TMS320F28xx DSP Rev. F SPRC0958f and the F2812 DSK board. Similar examples are provided for F2808 and F28044 DSK boards. The content of the SPRC0958f package includes an example that demonstrates flash coding for F28xx DSP s. It can also be used as a base template for user code, taking into consideration the special setup needed for programs running from on-chip flash and not the device s RAM space. The best project provided by the SPRC0958f archive is the non-bios flash example. This project builds and loads a non-bios program into the F2812 DSK board s flash that toggles the XF bit in and endless loop, blinking the board s LED. Flashing the F2812 DSK board using the.out file requires the following steps: 1. Verify the Jumper configuration on your F2812 DSK board Jumper 1 (2-3) Microcomputer mode Bootable Flash Enabled Jumper 7 (1-2) enabled for boot mode 3 (Flash). Jumpers 8, 11, and 12 can be on either position (use default) 2. Follow the Command Usage section to load the.out file into your F2812 DSK board.
