5 Introduction In the past, students have been responsible for resetting their own calculators before a test or an exam to ensure an equal baseline for all participants. However, students have learned ways to bypass reset and disable options and keep formulas, calculations, and data on their calculators. TI TestGuard 3.0 is an application (app) for TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus graphing calculators that allows you more control over a student s calculator in a testing environment, and ensures fairness for all students. First, you install TI TestGuard 3.0 on your educator calculator using TI Connect or another TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator. Then, you use TI TestGuard 3.0 to create the calculator setup that students will use for an examination. During this setup, you can choose to delete or disable certain data; delete or disable programs; or delete, disable, or keep certain applications. Once you have created the calculator setup, you can double check it by viewing a summary, and then transfer this setup to a student s calculator using a (non USB) input/output calculator-to-calculator cable. When the transfer is complete, TI TestGuard 3.0 displays a unique and randomly generated confirmation code on both your educator calculator and the student s calculator. The confirmation code is the same on both calculators. After an exam or test is over, you can use TI TestGuard to re-enable those programs and applications you previously disabled on a student s calculator. A student can also re-enable a programs and applications by linking to another TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator and receiving any file. Audience This Guidebook is for teachers, instructors, or educators who use TI TestGuard 3.0 to create student calculator setups for examinations for TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus calculators. What s New? Verifying Calculator Information To verify the type of calculator you are using, the version of the operating system you are using, the product number of your calculator, and the calculator serial number, complete the following steps: 1. Press y L. 2. Select About. The operating system version number uses the format x.yy, such as 2.55MP. The serial number displays as the ID. Verifying Your Version of TI TestGuard To verify the version of TI TestGuard on your calculator, complete the following steps: 1. Press å. 2. Select TestGrd3. 3. Select About. Verifying Free RAM on Your Calculator To verify the amount of free RAM you have on your calculator, complete the following steps: 1. Press y L. 2. Select About. 3. Select Mem Mgmt/Del. 34 Troubleshooting TI TestGuard 3.0 This chapter describes error messages and includes troubleshooting tips for TI TestGuard 3.0. Application Errors Error Message Description Check the following: The student s calculator must be either a TI-83 Plus or a TI-84 Plus. The I/O link cable must be securely attached to both the teacher s and the student s calculators. Try disconnecting the cable and reconnecting it to both units. Also, verify that you are using an I/O cable and not a USB cable to connect the calculators. TI TestGuard 3.0 does not work with USB cables. The student s calculator must have at least 2500 bytes of free memory. If it does not, manually delete some items from RAM and run TI TestGuard 3.0. On the TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus, press y L, then select Mem Mgmt/Del to display RAM FREE. You can delete items to free RAM from this screen. Select a data type (for example, Prgm), highlight an item to delete, and press {. A program named testasm may already be on the student s calculator. Delete the program and run TI TestGuard 3.0 again. 30 Troubleshooting TI TestGuard 3.0

35 Low Battery Condition This error occurs when the teacher s calculator does not have enough free RAM. It can occur during TI TestGuard 3.0 setup or upon an attempt to run TI TestGuard 3.0 to clear a calculator. To correct the problem: Quit TI TestGuard 3.0. Delete or archive items from your calculator s memory until you have at least 1500 bytes free. Start TI TestGuard 3.0 and continue setup or clearing calculators. Note: This error only occurs on a student s calculator if TI TestGuard 3.0 is set to delete or disable Apps. It is seen only by students with a TI-83 Plus calculator. The student pressed Õ when TI TestGuard 3.0 finished running. The calculator is designed to run the last program in memory when Õ is pressed. However, the program that executes when TI TestGuard 3.0 runs is no longer on the student s calculator. To clear the error: Select Quit to return to the TI TestGuard 3.0 Calculator Clear screen. Press any number, a series of numbers, or enter an equation. Press Õ. A low battery condition is shown on the Home screen. If the low-battery message appears on the calculator, do not attempt a Flash download. If you receive this error while installing an application, change the batteries and try again. Troubleshooting TI TestGuard

36 Archive Full This error occurs when the TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus does not have sufficient memory for the application. To create enough space for an application, you must delete an application and/or archived variables from the calculator. Before deleting an application from the TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus, you can back it up to a computer by using TI Connect. Once saved, you can reload it to the calculator later using TI Connect. Communication Error This error indicates the Flash installer is unable to communicate with the TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus. The problem is usually associated with the cable and its connection to the calculator and/or to the computer. Make sure the cable is firmly pushed in to the calculator and the computer. If this does not correct the problem, try a different cable and reboot your computer. If you continue to get this error, please contact education.ti.com/support for assistance. Validation Error This error occurs if electrical interference caused a link to fail when you loaded an application onto your calculator. Try to install the application again. If you continue to receive this error, contact education.ti.com/support. Note: This error is not associated with the Validation OS check in the TI TestGuard 3.0 application. Checksum Error The Flash installer was not able to verify that an application was fully installed. Exit the installer and try to install the application again. If this problem persists, contact education.ti.com/support. Other Errors See the TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus Guidebook (education.ti.com/guides) for information about a specific error or contact education.ti.com/support. 32 Troubleshooting TI TestGuard 3.0
