1 Week 1 Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: January 09, 2018 (Tuesday) Start time: 2:30 pm End time: 3:30 pm Initial Setup: It was the day 1 of our Capstone project. I got all the required equipment form Jason and placed all the equipment on our designated work table. And we also sent the kick off meeting invitations to all the team members and to our instructor Jason Fisher. Documentation: We wrote down all equipment borrowed from SAIT with their serial numbers and the condition of all the items received. Date: January 10, 2018 (Wednesday) Start time: 04:00 pm End time: 04:21 pm Kick-off Meeting: Today was our team s Project Kick-off meeting. We signed the team contract and made few corrections to our Project Charter before signing the contract. Our first team meeting went well. I was the chair of the first meeting and learned how to conduct a meeting effectively. Lessons Learned: I learned how to Document all the items properly when we borrow any items from anyone. Do not write the final page number on the documentation pages till the end as you might end up borrowing more items and that needs to be documented too. During the kick off meeting, I learned that the chair should always be in-charge of the meeting proceedings. Never allow anyone else to control the meeting on your behalf. 2 Week 2 Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: January 16, 2018 (Tuesday) Start time: 1:30 pm End time: 3:30 pm Research: Researched and compared pros and cons of different databases. Researched different database systems available to see which one is a good fit for our project needs. There are too many databases available than what I was thinking initially. Found a good article on this website which can be useful for our project: _Fingerprint_Data Date: January 17, 2018 (Wednesday) Start time: 02:00 pm End time: 04:30 pm Research continued: Today I continued my research on databases by reading more articles online. Used this entire period of time to work on the research I needed to finish. I will be compiling my research and preparing a report, which will be one of the deliverables that we will presented to the client. Most likely we will be using MySql database system for our project as we have some experience using it from previous semesters. Lessons Learned: I learned that there are too many database systems out there in the market. I am not familiar with the workings of most of the new databases which I found during my search. The most popular databases are Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, MySQL, and IBM DB2. These RDBMS s are used mostly in large enterprise scenarios, with the exception of MySQL, which is also used to store data for web applications. MySql seems to be the one which can fits our project needs. n/a

3 Week 3- Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: January 23, 2018 (Tuesday) Start time: 1:00 pm End time: 3:45 pm Installation: Today we downloaded the ISO image of windows server 2016 from online resources on the flash drive and tried installing the OS on the server but could not boot the server as we forgot to make bootable ISO image. Then we created the bootable ISO image to boot the server using the flash drive and tried once again to install the windows server 2016 on the Server. And then, we installed the OS successfully. We checked the installed features and functionality of the OS. It s all set and ready to go. Database Research: We researched more about wamp server and xampp server. We compared the pros and cons of both servers. The MySQL database management tool: phpmyadmin can be used both on wamp and xampp. We decided to go with the wamp server as it can be used with windows more efficiently. In order to boot the server and install OS using flash drive, we do need to create a bootable ISO image. Wamp stands for windows, apache, mysql, php. Xampp stands for x-os, apache, mysql, php, perl. x-os means it can be used for any operating system. We learned that wamp is easy to use on windows server platform. n/a Date: January 24, 2018 (Wednesday) Start time: 02:00 pm End time: 04:30 pm Installation: Today we installed the wamp on our windows server 2016 OS. But the wamp software had some problems installing as some.dll files were missing. We had to uninstall and install wamp four times and had to install all the missing.dll files first before installing wamp for the fourth time. We were able to install wamp successfully in our fourth try finally. And, I also started creating our database and created two tables. It is important to install all the required.dll files before installing the wamp successfully. n/a

4 Week 4- Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: January 31, 2018 Installation: Start time: 1:30 pm End time: 3:30 pm Today we downloaded the windows 10 ISO image for Raspberry pi from online resources on the flash drive. Tried to install the image on pi but it did not work. Found out that we need a developer dashboard to be installed on windows 10 machine before we can create a bootable ISO image of OS to be installed on raspberry pi. Still have to do more search on this topic. Research: Start Time: 3:30 pm End Time: 4:30 pm Today I also researched further on what kind of data tables we will need to store data in our database. I could not find the correct solution yet. Need to do more reading on the topic of databases yet. 5 Week 5-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: February 06, 2018 Installation: Start time: 1:00 pm End time: 3:15 pm The downloaded windows 10 IOT dashboard for Raspberry pi did not work after the installation as there is something wrong with the raspberry pi. After the installation was done, it did restart and showed the welcome page for windows 10 but then it will just reboot on its own and second time it got stuck on the windows starting page and got hang up. We need to try another Raspberry pi. Or we will need to research more on Raspbian to see if our scanner will work with Raspbian OS Research: Start Time: 3:30 pm End Time:4:30 pm I did research further on what other OS are available to be installed on Raspberry pi to work with fingerprint scanner and SQL database. Windows 10 IOT might not be the best OS for our project needs. It will work with Python but its not working for our scanner n/a

6 Week 6-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: February 13, 2018 Database Research: Start time: 1:00 pm End time: 3:15 pm I tried to find out more about the database tables which we will need for our project. Looked into the information about how to create subroutines for the project. We will need to create one table for holding Employee s personal information. Second table will be needed for time in and time out. n/a Date: February 14, 2018 Raspbian OS Installation: Start time: 2:00 pm End time: 4:00pm Installed Raspbian operating system on a different Rapsberry pi. And then we installed fprint software for our fingerprint scanner Eikon Touch 710 which installs the drivers of the scanner. But it did not work as expected. It keeps on exiting after my finger gets scanned. Then we also downloaded and tried different versions of the fprint libraries. But the scanner would not read in the data still. We will need to try a different scanner. Eikon Touch 710 scanner is not really working well. We are going to buy a new scanner and try installing it on Raspbian OS. Evan

7 Week 7-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: February 28, 2018 Database: Subroutine Research Start time: 2:00 pm End time: 3:30 pm -Looked information found in the google searches about how to store subroutines in the database and how to connect it with raspberry pi. I need to write a subroutine for adding the new user s employee id automatically after the finger print is scanned. Setting up pi with SQL Start time:3:30 pm End time: 4:30 pm -Installed Python SQL and created the script in PHP which connects to the pi. -Using subroutines allows you to tackle bite size pieces of a problem individually. Once each piece is working correctly you then put the pieces together to create the whole solution. Evan Week 8-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: March 06, 2018 Setting up remote WAMP connection Start time: 1:05 pm End time: 2:30 pm -Connected the switch with raspberry pi and server We need the switch so that the raspberry pi is able to communicate with the server and transfer the fingerprint data from the pi to the wamp server. - Assigned IP address to pi: Assigned IP address to the server : configured the wamp server to allow remote access to the pi. -Were not able to ping the raspberry pi from server 2106 and vice versa. - Opened the ports 80 and port 3306 on windows server 2016 Port 3306 should be open to connect to database. Port 80 needs to be open for web interface for WAMP server. Evan

8 Date: March 07, 2018 Research Start Time: 2:10pm End time 3:15pm -Read google article about php Scripts and Sub routines. We can either write sub routine in the php script or we can connect to the database table with python scripts. Will try to do subroutine inside the php script first and see how it works. Subroutine Start:3:15 pm End:4:15 pm -Wrote the subroutine for adding new employees automatically that helps reading the new empid and assigning the id to the other table to store the in and out time automatically. -This new information will then be connected to the raspberry pi using Python Script. - Tried writing this subroutine: begin declare empid int; declare exit handler for sql exception rollback; start transaction; insert into empinfo set fname=fname, lname=lname; select last_insert_id() into new_id; insert into timesheet set fk=new_id, timein=timein, timeout=timeout, date=date; commit; end

9 Week 9-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: March 13, 2018 Banner Start: 1:10 pm End:2:10 pm -Created banner for our Team for the showcase event and sent the to Jason for getting the team s banner printed. After plenty of trial and error, made a good looking banner for our team RDS Startup Start:2:15pm End Time: 2:40 pm -Enabled RDS on Server And tried to connect it with the laptop and raspberry pi. The connections seems to be properly working now. Tested Subroutine Start Time:2:45 pm End Time: 3:45 pm The subroutine to add new empid is not working. The individual records are not getting updated. Lessons Learned: The subroutine method is not working. We will skip this idea and then try to run queries through the python script Date: March 14, 2018 Remote Connection to the Database Start Time:2:00 pm End Time:3:30 pm -Created the Administration page on WAMP Server index.php with Evan assistance -The admin page is tested and is working Tested the Python Script Start Time:3:30 pm End Time:4:00pm -Connected the admin page to the python script good.py -The Python script is working and adding the new finger prints for the user to the database -But the SQL query to get the individual records is not working. Lessons Learned: The connected Python script is good for updating the records in the database tables but it needs to be altered to make the individual queries to run to update time and date stamps.

10 Week 10-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: March 21, 2018 Task: Research on FTP and SQL Start Time: 2pm End Time: 3:30 pm Did google search and read articles regarding how to use FTP services with SQL to do backup of data. Found a very good website which explains on how to select databases, how to perform full backup, encrypt data, compress data, send data to a folder, FTP or cloud service: SQL Backup FTP is ideal for any SQL Server database where backups should be sent to FTP, SFTP, FTPS, NAS, local or network folder, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive Task: Presentation and documentation Start Time: 3:40pm End Time: 4:45 pm -Started compiling the points what needs to be added in the Final project presentation for the showcase day -Also started compiling the steps which we need to add in the user manual of our project report.

11 Week 11-Journal Entry- Gursharan Rattan Date: March 27, 2018 Start Time: 1:00 Pm End Time: 2:30 pm Task: FTP and SQL Setup -Downloaded the Microsoft SQL Backup and FTP executable file from -Installed the file on FTP Server -Installed IIS web server, however IIS was interrupting the WAMP Server functionality as Microsoft SQL backup Software is not compatible with WAMP. So Uuinstalled the Microsoft SQLBackup and FTP and installed the SQLBackupAndFTP executabale file. - Installed FTP Server role on server 2016 and configured it with IIS by giving the name and IP of server -created the FTP backup site in IIS -Connected the FTP backup to FTP Server Task: FTP back up schedule created Start time: 2:30 pm End Time:3:30 pm -Connected to MySQL in the SQL Backup FTP and scheduled the backup for after 2 minutes of the current time and then saved and tested the configuration. -The FTP backup is now working and the data was saved in the FTP backup site. -Scheduled the daily backup of the data to happen at 12:00 am for seven days a week.

12 Week 12-Journal Entry Gursharan Rattan Date: April 03, 2018 Task: Clicked pictures Start Time:1:00 pm End Time: 1:45 pm -I clicked pictures of our project working. -Clicked pictures of all the hardware like: server, switch, raspberry pi, fingerprint scanner Which I am going to add to the user manual portion of our project. -Took pictures of the team members to be added on project website. Task: Documented User Manual Start Time: 1:45 pm End Time: 3:30 pm -I started writing the user manual which will be the part of our final project report. -Created heading points for the user manual. Main headings are: Steps for windows Server setup, Steps for pi setup, Switch configuration, Fingerprint scanner configuration, How to enroll new users, How to sign in and sign out the users. -Took screenshots of the different screens like login script, logout script, user-registration script to be added to the steps in the user manual. Date: April 04, 2018 Task: Final project report documentation Start Time: 1:15 pm End Time: 2:30 pm -Started creating the Final Project report with Evan - Added our Executive Summary -Added our Project Purpose -Added our Project Scope -Stated compiling all the required documents which will be included in our final deliverables during the wrap-up meeting
