FYI INNOVATION ANNOUNCING FDRVIEWS Turning Raw Data Into Smart Decisions FDRViews provides a simplified user interface to query and analyze your z/os storage system data. Its user extensible Grouping and Questions design allows for almost unlimited user customization. FDRViews will provide you with new insights into your z/os storage environment. Now in BETA testing. GA 3rd Quarter, 2007 July 2007 Volume 5.0 Focus NEW PRODUCTS: FDRERASE/OPEN FDRMOVE FDRVIEWS ANNOUNCING FDRMOVE WHO THE SOLUTION WILL BENEFIT FDRViews will benefit storage administrators, managers, systems programmers and other mainframe support personnel. Its simple Ask a Question, Get an Answer user interface allows both the inexperienced and the highly experienced storage administrator to fully review their environment. FDRViews uses FDREPORT to gather a snapshot of the data to answer the question. The FDRVIEWS GUI end user interface See page 5 for more details. FDRMOVE combines the proven technology of FDRPAS (volume migration) and FDRINSTANT (instant data set copy) to provide non-disruptive or minimally-disruptive movement of data sets. FDRMOVE can be used to move data at the data set level to new disks, and is particularly useful for combining data from smaller disks onto larger disks, such as moving three (3) s onto a FDRMOVE is very easy to use. FDRMOVE supports single and multi-volume VSAM and non-vsam data sets on SMS and non-sms volumes. FDRMOVE will automatically inhibit new data sets from being allocated to SMS source volumes during the move. Flexible selection criteria by volume from the catalog or by storage group. Allows you to free up UCB s and implement load balancing. ISPF interface will allow you to monitor FDRMOVE activity. Simulation feature that validates your control statement and displays all the selected data sets and shows which are currently active, including the owning jobnames. FDRMOVE includes FDRPAS. See page 9 for more details.

FDRERASE/OPEN NEW PRODUCT FDRERASE/OPEN now in CCEVS Evaluation for Certification The primary purpose of FDRERASE/OPEN is to erase data from enterprise disk storage systems (i.e. large scale storage systems with one or more hard disks containing system and user data) that an organization may be scrapping or decommissioning, selling or returning, reusing for a different purpose within the organization. It is also used when an organization is leaving a recovery site, e.g. after a disaster recovery test, to prevent any access to any data that may reside on the disk storage system leaving their control. FDRERASE/OPEN accomplishes erasure by overwriting, to destroy any data residing on the disk storage system making it no longer accessible. The disk erasure techniques provided by FDRERASE/OPEN offer successively higher levels of data erasure security by overwriting once or, as appropriate, by overwriting multiple times using multiple data patterns and complements of those patterns, using suitable internal functions to insure data is physically written to disk and to confirm that erasure did take place. FDRERASE/OPEN is in evaluation for CCEVS certification. See this link for more information: FDRERASE/OPEN Key Features: Securely overwrites all data on physical or logical drives. Erases any disk that can be attached to an Intel (x86) or compatible platform, SCSI or FIBRE attached. Automatically detects all attached disks, but allows you to easily select only the disks that you want to be erased. Operates from a bootable CD. All options and history are kept on a USB memory stick. The SECUREERASE option, which meets all US Department of Defense (DoD) standards for data erasure, overwrites with varying complementary patterns (from 3 to 8 passes per block). The VERIFY option verifies that disks have been successfully erased (i.e. they contain patterns written for auditing purposes by FDRERASE/OPEN). Permanent HISTORY RECORD of all action taken by FDRERASE/OPEN to satisfy any audit requirements. Sample FDRERASE/OPEN time to ERASE open system disk Elapsed Data # of Disks Size Total GB Time Rate Disk GB 320 GB 1739 Sec 184MB/Sec IBM DS GB 32 GB 314 Sec 105MB/Sec IBM DS GB 64 GB 383 Sec 171MB/Sec IBM DS8100 2

FDRERASE/OPEN There is a series of function icons near the top of the screen, as shown in the example below. Most of these functions can also be invoked from the pull-down menus, such as the Action menu, but using the icons is more convenient. The icons/functions are: Displays FDRERASE/OPEN log files, which contain details of FDRERASE/OPEN operations against a given disk. A list of available log files is displayed, sorted by device name. Displays the FDRERASE/OPEN history data, which contains one summary line for every FDRERASE/OPEN operation which has been performed. Invokes the ERASE function on the checked disk(s). ERASE overwrites each sector on the disk up to 8 times with a data pattern specified by the user. By default, it overwrites 1 time with binary zeros. ERASE is compliant with data erasure requirements that specify that the data be erased or cleared. Invokes the SECUREERASE function on the checked disk(s). SECUREERASE overwrites each sector of the disk up to 8 times with a random data pattern involving complements. In other words, the first pattern is random, the second pattern is the complement of the first, the third is random, etc. By default, it does 3 passes. SECUREERASE is compliant with the latest US DoD data erasure requirements and other requirements which specify that the data be sanitized or purged. Invokes the VERIFY function on the checked disk(s), used to verify that a disk has been erased. It reads selected sectors from the disk and verifies that they contain a pattern which could have been written by FDRERASE/OPEN. Invokes a PRINT function on the checked disk(s), which prints selected data in hex. DELETE TASK deletes requested erase, verify or print functions which have not yet started. Highlight the line for each task to be deleted, then click the icon. (Pause) and (Resume) are used to temporarily stop erase, verify or print functions, and restart them. CANCEL is used to terminate active erase, verify or print functions. Are used to toggle the FDRERASE/OPEN display between a single panel (as in the example above) and a double panel with the disk subsystems on the left and individual disks on the right. Invokes the FDRERASE/OPEN options panel. Allows you to change the FDRERASE/OPEN terminal security password, and the number of minutes of idle time before the keyboard is locked. Invokes FDRERASE/OPEN terminal security and locks the keyboard, immediately. The displays are still updated but no functions can be initiated. The current password is required to re-enable new functions. This can be used anytime you expect to be away from the terminal. The ( power button ) exits from FDRERASE/OPEN, syncs all files on the FDRERASE/OPEN memory stick, and terminates the operating system. 3

Simply plug the FDRERASE/OPEN memory stick into any USB port and you can access the files. 4

FDRVIEWS INTRODUCING Continued from cover FDRVIEWS Product Overview Here is a graphical view of the FDRViews architecture: The Snapshot Collector, the Datastore, and the User Interface could all be running on different PCs or servers. FDRVIEWS, is a cost option to FDREPORT. 5

FDRVIEWS The FDRVIEWS User Interface The FDRViews GUI component provides the graphical interface to the data. The GUI will be used to make the three selections and generate reports on the data. The interface consists of three elements: the Snapshot Selection pane, the Groupings pane and the Questions pane. GROUPINGS PANE QUESTIONS PANE SNAPSHOT SELECTION PANE User can easily change these values Allows you to see the exact amount of bytes and volumes for this snapshot collection Limits this grouping to only select volumes starting with B 6

FDRVIEWS The FDRViews Snapshot Collector and Scheduler The FDRViews Snapshot Collector shown below shows the snapshots that have been taken. You can use the Snapshot Scheduler to determine when the snapshot should be taken. For example you can schedule the snapshot to take place twice a day at 7:00AM and at 7:00PM and then use these snapshots as input to create the daily charts on your DASD Storage. The Scheduler will also allow you to take a snapshot at any time. If an ad hoc report is needed based on the present conditions you can simply create a new snapshot by selecting the TAKE SNAPSHOT NOW button. Most snapshots will only take a few minutes. If you click here this will allow you to take an immediate snapshot 7

FDRMOVENEW PRODUCT Introducing FDRMOVE A z/os Volume Consolidation Solution. FDRMOVE builds on the proven technology of FDRPAS (volume migration) and FDRINSTANT (instant data set copy) to provide non-disruptive or minimally disruptive movement of individual data sets. KEY FEATURES OF FDRMOVE ARE: Automation of the movement of data sets, using simple JCL and control statements. Unattended operation: once started, FDRMOVE can execute for long periods of time without human intervention or monitoring. Handling of active data sets: when a data set is identified as active (because a SYSDSN ENQ is held by another task), FDRMOVE will begin testing the ENQ on the data set at frequent intervals. As soon as it becomes free, it will be moved. Most data sets will become naturally inactive at some time but for others you may need to take action to free them for brief intervals. Use of fast data replication hardware facilities, such as FlashCopy on IBM and HDS disks, EMCSNAP on EMC disks, and SNAPSHOT on STK/Sun disks. The FASTMOVE function of FDRMOVE will move source volumes into the target subsystem ( transit station ), using FDRPAS, where fast replication can be used to quickly move data sets when they become available. FDRMOVE can move all types of data sets including VSAM, DB2, and non-vsam data sets. It can move individual pieces of a multi-volume data set, or the entire data set. FDRMOVE can be used to move data at the data set level to new disks, and is particularly useful for combining data from smaller disks to larger disks, such as moving three (3) s onto a You can use two possible techniques: You can use FDRPAS to move a set of smaller disks to a matching set of larger disks. FDRPAS will update the free space to make all the new tracks available for allocation. You can then use FDRMOVE to move the data sets from several other input volumes to populate the larger disks. Or you can simply initialize a set of larger disks and use FDRMOVE to move data sets from various smaller disks to populate the new disks. Data sets can be moved between disk volumes in the same disk subsystem, or between disk volumes in different subsystems and between different hardware manufacturers. FDRMOVE supports singleand multi-volume VSAM and non-vsam data sets on SMS or non-sms volumes. FDRMOVE has an option to set the input volumes to DISNEW for SMS (disable new allocations) and PRIVATE for non-sms, so that new data sets will go to the new output volumes. 9

FDRMOVE Continued from page 9 FDRMOVE has three functions FASTMOVE, MOVE and Simulation: FASTMOVE: uses instant data set replication technology such as FlashCopy (on IBM and HDS subsystems) and EMCSNAP to quickly move data sets when the source and target data sets are in different disk subsystems by moving the source volumes into the target subsystem. FASTMOVE can typically move up to 1TB of data per minute, residing within no more than 250 data sets from 16 volumes concurrently. FASTMOVE is designed to move data sets belonging to one application, when that application cannot be brought down for more than a few minutes. MOVE: uses normal read/write I/O to move data sets when they become inactive (DEQed). MOVE will immediately move all data sets which are inactive. After that, it will frequently check the ENQ status of all selected data sets not yet moved. As soon as they become inactive (such as a TSO user logging off), they are immediately moved. SIMULATION: FDRMOVE includes a simulation facility (SIMMOVE) which simulates a FASTMOVE step. SIMMOVE validates your control statements and the PASJOB internal job. It displays all the volumes that will be processed and shows how many will need to move to transit stations. It also displays all the selected data sets and shows which are currently active (including the using jobnames). CONSOLIDATE DISKS EXAMPLE SIMPLE JCL AND CONTROL CARDS This is an example of a MOVE to consolidate input volumes to output volumes. FDRMOVE will terminate automatically if all selected data sets have been moved. But if some data sets never become inactive, STOPINACTIVE=480 causes FDRMOVE to automatically terminate if it has been idle (not moving data sets) for a cumulative time of 480 minutes (8 hours). //FDRMOVE EXEC PGM=FDRMOVE,REGION=0M //STEPLIB DD DISP=SHR,DSN=paslibrary //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* //FDRSUMM DD SYSOUT=* //SYSUDUMP DD SYSOUT=* //SYSIN DD * MOVE TYPE=DSF,DISABLENEW=YES,STOPINACTIVE=480 SELECT ALLDSN,VOL=IN0001,NVOL=(OUT001,OUT002,OUT003,,OUT022) SELECT ALLDSN,VOL=IN0002,NVOL=(OUT001,OUT002,OUT003,,OUT022)... SELECT ALLDSN,VOL=IN0059,NVOL=(OUT001,OUT002,OUT003,,OUT022) SELECT ALLDSN,VOL=IN0060,NVOL=(OUT001,OUT002,OUT003,,OUT022) Or moving all data sets residing in an old controller to a new controller within a storage group. SELECT ALLDSN,CUID=50012,STORGRP=DB2,NEWCUID=79801,NEWSTORGRP=DB2 SUMMARY FDRMOVE can be used to: Consolidate smaller volumes onto a larger volume, for SMS and non-sms volumes Move additional smaller volumes to fill up the space on a larger volume with minimal disruption after using FDRPAS to move one volume to that larger volume non-disruptively. Move data sets to new volumes or SMS storage groups with minimal disruption Fewer UCBs are required to address the data, so freed UCBs can be used for other purposes Implement load balancing moving data sets or volumes to improve performance 10

Since Display DSN is set to YES, it displays each data set that is still active. It also shows the number of jobs or tasks which hold the SYSDSN ENQ on the data set and lists the first few jobnames. Once the display shows that all volumes are in transit stations, you will see the active data sets that remain and the jobs or tasks that own them. You can then shut down those applications. FASTMOVE tests the ENQ every few seconds, and moves the data set with instant technology as soon as it becomes free.
