2 EINLEITUNG If the hard drive in your ThinkPad T420 has failed or you wish to install a larger or faster drive, this guide will show you how to replace the hard drive. Guide notes This guide does not cover operating system installation. I may be able to help locate an image if I know what your system ran before, but there are no gaurantees. If you are installing an SSD or an AF (Advanced Format) drive, a drive spacer may be required and are usually available on sites like ebay if your drive does not include one. If you are installing a hard drive, cut the spacer relative to the location of the breather hole. If the system has a unknown HDP installed, this MUST be removed. The password will be loaded onto your replacement drive. This is stored on the system's ATMEL chip. Make a backup of your original drive, if possible. This is not a requirement (and not required if you purchased the system used and want to install a new drive), but will apply in most scenarios in the event something goes horribly wrong. Once you are done with the old drive and are sure you have your data you need off of the old drive, securely wipe the drive. SED's can be erased by deleting the encryption key from the drive rather then using a drawn out full disk erasure. This also applies to FDE. Guide times Drive installation: 30 minutes OS installation and updates: Based on your system, OS and other variables Backup and system image: If you are doing a backup and making a system image, this will significantly increase completion time. This will not be as long with a clean OS installation. 3 Schritt 1 Backup your personal data In most cases, the existing OS is likely to need extensive cleaning to be usable. If the drive is imaged in this scenario, the image should only be used to save the final snapshot of the drive if the original hard drive is failing. This step only applies if you do not have a recent backup and the drive works. If the drive is dead or you want to start fresh, skip this step. Note: I do not have any specific recommendations for backup software. While a new OS installation is recommended, drive imaging can be used if the current OS image works to save time. This should only be done if the current OS installation is in good condition or only needs minor cleanup. Before working on the system, make a backup. This can be done with drag and drop or a backup program of your choice. For additional security, an image of your old hard drive should be made. 4 Schritt 2 Unplug the system and remove the battery Unplug the system from power, if it is plugged in. After the computer is unplugged, remove the battery. Slide the locking tab to the unlocked position. Hold the tab in place while removing the battery. Schritt 3 Remove the hard drive door Remove the hard drive door from the system. 5 Schritt 4 Pull the drive caddy out Remove the black plastic tab from the system. Pull the tab to remove the drive caddy from the system. Set the computer aside while replacing the drive. Schritt 5 Remove the drive bumpers Remove the hard drive bumpers to expose the screws. Do this for both sides. 6 Schritt 6 Remove the hard drive Once the 4 screws are removed, lift the hard drive out of the caddy. Set the old drive aside or store it in a safe location. Schritt 7 Install the new hard drive If you are installing an SSD, a 7mm->9.5mm spacer may need to be installed. Noting how the old drive was removed, install your new drive. 7 Schritt 8 Install an operating system If you are installing Windows, purchase OEM installation media that does not include an installation key unless the ISO is from Microsoft. 3rd party images should not be trusted nor used. In order to save time and avoid setting the system up from scratch every time, the system should be imaged once fully configured and updated. This image can be used to quickly recover the system if the drive is replaced or the system crashes. After reassembling the system and confirming the new drive is recognized, install your preferred operating system. Once you install the new hard drive, reassemble your computer in reverse order.
