This version (1.1) features the following improvements: New driver for EasyCoder 401 New driver for EasyCoder 601 Supports black mark sensor for EasyCoder 201 II, 401, 501, and 601. Allows custom-defined label sizes to be selected. The UBI Macintosh Driver makes it possible to use a corresponding UBI EasyCoder printer for producing printouts from most programs that can run on any Apple Macintosh computer. There is one driver for each printer model and printhead density combination. The UBI Macintosh Drivers works with programs using Apple's standard printer routine. Some programs have special printer routines which unfortunately do not match the UBI Macintosh Driver. With a few minor exceptions, the EasyCoder printer will work like any ImageWriter or LaserWriter printer. The EasyCoder printers are not compatible with the Postscript language. Thus, images in PostScript format will be printed according to their QuickDraw representations, i.e., the bitmap version used to show the image on the screen of the Macintosh. For illustrations, MacPaint, PICT and TIFF formats are to prefer. As a rule, it is better to print images from the original drawing program where they were created, rather than mounting or pasting them into another program. The serial transfer of data to the printer is speeded up by means of RLL compression. Areas with screen backgrounds or complicated patterns take little advantage of the compression and will therefore take longer time to print. UBI EasyCoder 201 IIE, EasyCoder 501 E, and EasyCoder 601 E printers can be fitted with an optional serial interface board, which allows the speed of data transfer to be doubled. Kit Description The UBI Macintosh Driver kit contains: One 3.5" DD floppy disk that contains driver routines for EasyCoder 101, EasyCoder 201 II and EasyCoder 501, each with two different printhead densities, as well as EasyCoder 401 and EasyCoder 601, each with one printhead density. One communication cable. One gender changer. This booklet. License and Copyright The floppy disk should be labelled with the UBI logotype printed in four colours, which indicates that the floppy disk is an original, authorized copy from UBI. The program is protected by copyright. The license is for use on one single computer at a time. You are allowed to make copies for backup purpose only. UBI Shell version 3.1 or later. The required memory size (RAM) in the printer depends on the dimensions and appearance of the label. Recommended memory size: 256 kbytes or more. The Macintosh computer should have System 6.04 or later installed. Depending on the size of the labels, the printer driver may require up to 512 kbytes of free working memory space in the Macintosh. Each UBI Macintosh Driver requires 50 kbytes of harddisk space. 2

3 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Connecting Printer and Computer With both the EasyCoder printer and the Macintosh computer turned off, insert the small connector (DIN-8 male) of the communications cable in either the Printer or Modem port of your Macintosh. Note: If you switch the cable from one port to another on the printer, you must restart the printer. Printer Port (default) Modem Port Connect the cable to "uart1:" on any EasyCoder printer, or to "uart2:" or "uart3:" on an EasyCoder 201 IIE, EasyCoder 501 E or EasyCoder 601 E fitted with an optional Serial Interface Board. "uart2:" and "uart3:" have extra high transmission speed (38,400 baud instead of 19,200 on "uart1:"). The selected communication port must have a DB25 connector and use RS 232C serial communication. The kit includes a gender changer, which you can use to make the cable fit a male printer connector. Select the option Macintosh Driver, which is presented as the third option in the Sel. Application stack of menus (see appendix 2). The printer automatically detects to which port the computer is connected and sets up the printer in regard of communication and label length. Continued! 3

4 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS, cont'd. Installing the Printer Driver Start up your Macintosh computer. Insert the UBI Macintosh Driver disk. The icon will appear on the desktop. Open the disk by double-clicking its icon. There is one driver for each printer model/printhead density combination except for EasyCoder 401 and EasyCoder 601 which only come with 8 dots/mm printheads. 6 dots/mm = dots/inch 8 dots/mm = dots/inch 12 dots/mm = 300 dots/inch Then select the driver or drivers you need. There are two drivers for each EasyCoder printer model. Drag the selected printer driver file or files into your System folder. System 7.0 or later: The System folder should be closed when you drag the printer driver file(s) into it. Continued! 4

The file(s) will automatically be placed in the Extensions folder when you click the OK button. System versions earlier than 7.0: Just place the printer driver files anywhere inside the System folder. In the menu, open the Chooser. The Chooser window shows the icons of all installed printer drivers, e.g.: Continued! 5

An additional window will appear: Click the button of the communication port to which you have connected your EasyCoder printer (default: Printer). Select baud rate. Click 19,200 if you have connected the cable to "uart1:" Click 38,400 if you have connected it to "uart2:" or "uart3:" Select Xon/Xoff as flow control (default). RTS/CTS should only be used if communication errors occur on "uart1:". It requires the printer's setup to be changed (see the Technical Manual). Finally, click the OK button. Close the Chooser window by clicking the box in the left corner of the title bar. Continued! 6

7 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS, cont'd. Page Setup Open the application program you want to use. In the File menu, open the Page Setup option. In most applications, a window like the one illustrated below appears: WARNING! Printing outside the paper web may damage the printhead by overheating. 1 /. The entered value will be rounded off to a multiple of 16 dots. Hence the difference between preset sizes and custom sizes. Some application programs have a special Page Setup window, that only affects the screen presentation. In such cases, this window will appear when you order the printing. Select the Paper Size corresponding to the size of the labels in your EasyCoder printer. The size is expressed as Width Height in millimetres or inches 1, according to your choice in regard to units of measure. There are a number of preset options, but you can also enter a custom size. Do not select a larger paper size than necessary, since that will increase the transmission time. A paper size larger than the print window, as defined by the printer's setup (see the Technical Manual of the printer model in question), will cause an error (Error No Field out of label ). Change the paper size setup in the Macintosh Driver or the printer's setup (Media Size) and try again. In the Paper Source scroll box, specify the type of media you will use for printing. Your choice decides the amount of paper to be fed out of the printer. There are four or five options: - Labels (dispensing) - Labels (tear off) - Tickets with gap - Tickets with mark (not in the EasyCoder 101 driver) - Variable length strip Select the Orientation (the arrows indicate the paper feed direction). Click the OK button. Continued! 7

8 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS, cont'd. Printing To print the ready-designed label, click the Print... option in the File menu. In most applications, a window like this will appear: Some application programs will show special Print windows, which should be bypassed by clicking the OK button. If the Page Setup window of the EasyCoder printer driver (see previous page) has not already been displayed, it will appear now. Specify the number of pages of the application program to be printed. Specify the desired number of copies. Select the Paper Quality that matches the thermal paper or transfer ribbon loaded in your EasyCoder printer. Refer to the Technical Manual of the printer model in question for translations of the displayed options to actual product designations. Select the desired Print Quality (normal speed or high speed). Click the Print button and the EasyCoder will print the labels according to your specifications. HINTS: Due to the serial communication used by Macintosh computers, the transfer of data may take a few seconds depending on the selected baud rate and the size of the print image as decided in the Page Setup window. To speed up the printing, use the highest possible baud rate and do not specify a larger print area than necessary. Avoid screened backgrounds and complicated patterns. 8
