2 Get ready to enter a whole new world of capabilities in data acquisition. Where other systems stop, Dewetron is just getting started. Because we know that today, data acquisition involves a lot more than a few sensors there are ever-increasing demands on you to record other data as well. How about video, for example? Or audio? CAN Bus data? Position, speed, and distance information from GPS satellites? IRIG time code data? The list goes on. Only Dewetron systems allow you to record all of this and more simultaneously and in synch, regardless of the different sample rates from these various systems. And we didn t forget about sensor data that just keeps getting better and better with the advent of our own new A/D cards with 24-bit resolution, simultaneous sampling on all channels, robust anti-aliasing filtering, and more. We continue to expand our broad range of plug-in signal conditioning modules with more and better ones. Data from up to 4 CAN Bus interfaces can be acquired simultaneously. Record any and all CAN bus vehicle and passenger comfort parameters in synch with your sensor data! Up to four video cameras can be recorded in synch with your sensor, CAN, and other data. Supported cameras include synched firewire industrial cameras (up to 80 fps in color, or 240 fps in b/w), or consumer firewire and USB cameras (up to 30 fps) in several combinations. Dynamic and quasi-static signals from a wide variety of sensors can be connected directly to any Dewetron system via our DAQ, MDAQ, PAD, and EPAD signal conditioning modules. Many modules provide 1000 Vrms isolation. 2

4 A variety of Dewetron STREAM-MACHINE platforms are available choose the one that is the best balance of portability and expandability for your application. Our latest model is the DEWE-5000 (shown on the previous page). This is a notebook style system with a fold-up display and room for up to 16 plug-in modules on the front panel. Other popular portable models include the DEWE-3000 series, ideal for in-vehicle applications, and its slightly larger brother, the DEWE (which holds 16 modules). For pure rack-mounting applications we recommend the DEWE combined with our DEWE-RACK signal conditioning units. For applications where you need something that is both portable and/or rackmounting, and with Dewetron s legendary design, nothing outperforms the DEWE-4000, with its big 19 display, and room for 16 modules on the rear panel. For portable applications involving a notebook computer, see our DEWE-BOOK chasses. 9 Direct Sensor Connection The measurement amplifiers available allow a wide range of sensors to be directly connected. With galvanic isolation and symmetrically free floating differential inputs, the user is assured of making accurate, disturbance-free measurements. All input amplifiers have filters and measurement ranges, which can be selected manually or in software (when the software runs, the local buttons are locked out). Real Galvanic Isolation Rough and tumble environments with floating earth potentials and electromagnetic interference make getting high quality measurements a real challenge. But that s why so many DEWETRON amplifiers provide powerful galvanic isolation (channel-to-channel and channel-to-ground), and have differential floating and symmetric inputs. We accept the quality measurement challenge! Anti-aliasing Protection Sensor Database Additionally a sensor database can be added for nonlinear sensors or for calibration data. TEDS sensors are also supported. Offline sensor calibration can be done with Excel, and then imported into DEWESoft! Digitizing AC signals can lead to measurement errors due to false or alias frequencies that are multiples of the original signal. The proven solution is to use measurement amplifiers with built-in anti-aliasing filters, and A/D hardware like our Orion cards, which provide 24-bit resolution and fully automatic aliasing protection. 10 Multiple Sampling Rates The STREAM-MACHINE stores channel data at selected sampling rates and marks each measurement with a time stamp to provide channel-to-channel data correlation. Each channel has its own independent A/D converter (not multiplexed) and can be used simultaneously and synchronously with other channels having different sampling rates and trigger conditions. Sample configuration: Video (240 fps) Pressure (100 S/s) Temperature (1 S/s) GPS (20 S/s) Vibration (200 ks/s) Additionally a voice channel can be used for adding comments about the test being made. This is great for post-test analysis. The time reference comes from a quartz-stabilized source which can be externally synchronized via satellite (e.g., GPS), IRIG or DCF radio signals...or by inputting a digital impulse into multiple systems simultaneously. Freely Configurable Multi-channel Systems Depending on the desired vertical resolution (up to 24- bits) and sampling rate (up to 25 MS/s/ch) various A/D models are available. With an impressive 110 db signalto-noise ratio and up to 200 ks/s per channel, our 24- bit Orion card is ideal for signal analysis, FFT and transient processes in electro-mechanical fields. For electrical applications requiring 25 MS/s, one of our 12- bit Spectrum cards would be a better choice.(faster cards are also available - discuss your requirements with us!) Triggering and File Management The DEWETRON STREAM-MACHINE provides several useful data recording modes: Stream Function In this mode, all of the analog, CAN bus, and video data are continuously streamed to the 100 GB hard drive - video data at up to 240 fps, and 16 analog channels, each with 10 ks/s, and 50 CAN bus channels with 100 samples/s can be sampled for up to 100 minutes. You may also set trigger exceptions, to prevent unwanted triggers (like when a machine is stopped, or during a reset operation). Each trigger event starts recording with adjustable preand post-trigger time, plus a variable hold-off time. The software can also detect triggers which occur during the post-trigger phase, and can automatically lengthen the acquisition so that none are missed! (This feature can be turned on or off). 11 Trigger Functions: The following trigger conditions can be applied to any channel in your system not just the analog or dynamic channels. You can trigger from CAN bus and mathematical channels as well. In parallel, two separate video speeds for standard and triggered recording can be used. The slower recording captures and displays min/max data based on the higher sample rate! This means that you don t lose the overall amplitude signature even when storing at reduced rates. You can store reduced continuously, and at a higher rate when a trigger happens and it s completely automatic - just set it up and let it go! Setup parameters can also be printed to paper or PDF reports for documentation and ISO9000 compliance. Virtually every aspect of the software is saved within the setup, and is restored automatically when you load a data file later (even on a different computer!). Online analysis and display In the STREAM-MACHINE, data from different sources, acquired at different sampling rates, can be processed using mathematical formulas, and the results displayed online! Standard math is augmented with trigonmetric, integration, differentiation, boolean, and programmable digital filter functions. Data Integrity The raw data cannot be altered within the program, complying with international conventions about data integrity. 12

13 Overview Display Create whatever you want on this display, with sizeable analog and digital meters, scopes, horizontal and vertical recorder graphs, FFT windows, bar graphs, programmable LED s, video windows, and even GPS tracks! View your data on-line during acquisition, and also during replay using the PLAY and SPEED controls. Nothing else even comes close. FFT A powerful FFT analyzer provides line adjustment from 256 to 64k, window functions (Hamming, Hanning...), linear and log displays, high-pass filtering and averaging, A, B, C and D weighting, and more! Pop up windows show the max RMS and frequency peaks, and you can click any part of the FFT display area to add a dynamic mark showing the Hz and magnitude. Chart Recorder Horizontal and vertical (shown) chart recorder displays show your data over a long period of time (hours, days, weeks...). We ve emulated several popular displays to allow replacement of older strip chart recorders! Octave Octave analysis is a special form of FFT analysis often used in sound analysis. DEWESoft provides not only the classic 1/3 octave, but also 1/1, 1/3, 1/12, 1/24 octave on-line displays! Scope The oscilloscope mode allows signals to be analyzed in the microsecond range. Scale and position signals on the fly, and use triggering to freeze areas of interest. X-Y Recorder Recorded data may also be displayed as X/Y so that externally clocked signals such as crank-shaft referred signals can be displayed. 13

14 Video Data A camera is just a sensor, right? So why not use it to add context and meaning to our test data? Several cameras of different speeds and resolutions connect directly to the STREAM-MACHINE via both USB and IEEE (FireWire ). Stream Mode Continuous recording of up to 100 GB of data (at 30 fps) can be compressed to MPEG on-line. Even a compression factor as high as 20:1 results in little, if any, noticeable loss of image quality. Triggered Mode As with analog recording, pre- and post-triggering is also available for video recording! Capture what happened before the trigger...even with video! (Four cameras can be connected simultaneously) Mixed Mode During long, slow sample rate recording a fast event can be used to trigger a second, high sample rate recording with pre- and post-trigger. Timed video recording can also be achieved with a rotationally synchronized video recording (strobe) using an external trigger. Industrial color cameras as well as black and white cameras can be triggered up to their maximum frequency using such a strobe. Data Compression: Popular, industry standard compression formats can be used to save disk space. Video up to 30 fps can be compressed in real-time. Higher frame rates can be compressed off-line (immediately after recording) and your can select the compression ratio up to 50:1 (this reduces a 1 GB video to 20 MB). You can trigger video recording as well, and even use the dual-speed acquisition of video just as you can with sensor/signal data! This saves lots of disk space, and reduces the time and effort needed to analyze your data. 14

15 New Concept: Moving Documentation! In addition to printed and flat file documentation the STREAM-MACHINE can also generate video sequences that can be exported as an AVI video and sent by ! GPS data and time code, IRIG In parallel with the analog & digital sensor data, video data and CAN bus data you can also acquire position, velocity and time data from GPS. A variety of GPS interfaces can be used, according to the update rate, resolution, and information required. A typical standard GPS sensor delivers a position data and a time stamp once per second. Such sensors are inexpensive and easy to interface via RS232 or USB. CAN bus data The STREAM-MACHINE offers parallel recording of up to four CAN bus ports with hardware synchronization of the CAN bus analog data. For analysis a CAN bus protocol editor is available, databases that are already available may also be used (*.DBC filter). Our own DEWE-VGPS delivers high precision position data at 20 Hz, enabling on-line calculation of direction, speed and acceleration. Heavily used by the automotive and train industry for acceleration and deceleration/brake tests. IRIG is the standard range time for the American aerospace industry. Your Dewetron system can be hard-synched to IRIG-A, - B, H & NASA 36 codes! 16 Data Analysis and Exporting The completely new database concept makes it possible to find events quickly and easily even in large data files (100 GB or more). Using ActiveX or file export the data can be transferred to Excel, FlexPro, MATLAB, UFF58, I-DEAS, Famos, DIAdem TM, nsoft TM, ME scope TM or in ASCII format to other software. With the help of cursors and zooming, you can isolate events of interest and make reports Video data can be exported as moving documentation in popular formats like AVI, DivX, and MPEG. or copy and paste directly into popular programs like Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Royalty-Free Analysis DEWESoft can be installed without a license on any computer for use of the analyze mode! You can freely use the program to review data, make new exports and printed reports. 16

17 Networking The STREAM-MACHINE can be networked via TCP/IP (Ethernet recommended, but modem is also supported) for remote control and online data transfer to a server. ActiveX Plug-ins ActiveX has been in use for some time in Excel and FlexPro for the transfer of data, and now this port can be used bidirectionaly. ActiveX plug-in's can be used to extend the capabilities of DEWESoft 6 (requires -PROF version). DEWESoft turns your DEWETRON systems into a powerful suite of instruments. You can easily replace multimeters, recorders, oscilloscopes, FFT analyzers, X-Y recorders, and tape recorders. Online math channels, programmable digitial filters as well as freely adjustable triggers. An amazing user-defineable overview screen allows to show all instruments in parallel! DEWESoft supports easy data export to many common analysis software packages (FlexPro, Excel, DIAdem TM...) as well as printing your reports directly from DEWESoft. Several versions of DEWESoft are available. The standard edition is - SE, which includes DirectX video and all major data acquisition functions. The -PROF version adds support for multiple A/D cards, special cards, advanced FRF & Octave analysis, and synchronized video using our Basler cameras. -LT versions are available for systems with only PAD modules, and for systems with only an A/D board (no signal conditioning). Data Analysis Software FlexPro What s a Few Billion Data Points Between Friends? If you re like most engineers, you like to use Microsoft Excel for quickly charting some test data. That program is well-known, and nearly everyone has it. But Excel was never intended for data acquisition, and therefore it can only open 64 or 128 thousand rows of data, which isn t much in terms of data acquisition. And charts are limited in most versions of 16 thousand points.
