3 1. What is the Lotoo PAW 5000 Congratulations on your purchase of the Lotoo PAW The PAW 5000 is a highly musical portable music player designed for audiophiles on the move. This digital music player supports all major lossless and standard music files and conveys engaging and accurate sound in a solid and attractive design. Embedded in the core of the PAW 5000 is a high performance Blackfin 514 digital signal processor that prepares the digital signal before it reaches the DAC section for fast and accurate conversion into the analogue signal. This processor is also in charge of running the operating system with fast start-up and navigation and low power consumption. PAW 5000 is a highly versatile player equipped with S/PDIF line-out connection for Hi-Fi equipment and balanced 2.5mm output to provide connection for balanced headphones and earphones. Bluetooth connection option offers wireless sound transfer for Bluetooth enabled headphone and speakers. Lottoo PAW 5000 supports multiple music formats including DSD, FLAC, WAV, AAC, ALAC, MP3, WMA, M4A, CUE and APE and more. For fast and accurate file transfer via computers the PAW 5000 has been fitted with a high-speed USB 3.0 port. Supports both micro SDHC and micro SDXC cards up to 2TB the PAW 5000 offers storage for thousands of albums. 2. What s In The Box? 5 4. Getting Started Charging Before using your PAW 5000, please ensure that it has been charged to its maximum capacity, via the USB 3.0 connection. The recommended initial charge period is 6-8 hours. Subsequent charges should last until the unit shows 100% Charged but the unit may be used as normal during this charge period. Installing the Micro SD card Insert a blank Micro SD card into the slot on the base of the PAW Push the card until you hear click sound and then release. The card should remain in position inside the PAW To release the card, push gently on the card until you hear a click sound the slowly let go. The card should pop out to stick out around 3mm from the player. You are then free to take the card. Switching on the Lotoo PAW 5000 To power on the Lotoo PAW 5000, hold down the power button for around three seconds until the loading bar is full. The first time you power up the unit, you will be asked to select you preferred language. Use the jog wheel and confirm button to do so. Formatting the Micro SD card The Lotoo PAW 5000 supports both micro SDHC and micro SDXC cards up to 2TB, formatted in the FAT32 file system. We advise you format a blank card in the Lotoo PAW 5000 before use. To format your Micro SD card in the PAW 5000: Insert a Micro SD card into the Lotoo PAW 5000 Power on the PAW 5000 Hold the Back/Setup button (14) Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select System Settings and press the confirm button (10) 5. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Format and press the confirm button (10) 6. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Yes and press the confirm button (10) 7. Wait while the card is formatted.
6 8. Press the Back Button (14) several times until you are back at the main music screen. Transferring music to the PAW 5000 The Lotoo PAW 5000 utilises a USB 3.0 for fast file transfer from PC or Mac. To transfer file to the Lotoo PAW 5000: 1. Power on the Lotoo PAW Connect your Mac or PC to the USB 3.0 port on the PAW 5000 (found on the right hand side of the unit) using the included USB 3.0 cable. 3. When prompted to start the USB communication, use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Yes and press the confirm button (10) 4. The PAW 5000 will appear as a removable disk on the connected computer. 5. Drag and drop your music files onto the PAW We recommend that each artist is located in a separate folder, and each album by that artist is in a separate sub-folder within that artists folder. 6. When the data has finished transferring, eject the PAW 5000 using your computer s file management system. 7. Disconnect the PAW 5000 from your computer. 8. The PAW 5000 will now update the database. When prompted, press the Confirm button (10). 5. Connections There are several ways to connect your Lotoo PAW 5000: Line Out/SPDIF (01) This output can be used when connecting to an external amplifier or digital/analogue converter. The output doubles as an analogue and optical output. When connecting to an analogue amplifier, we recommend using a 3.5mm jack cable. When using the optical connection, we recommend using a mini-toslink cable. Headphone Output (02) This output is compatible with headphones that terminate in a 3.5mm stereo jack connector. Balanced Headphone Output (03) This output is compatible with balanced headphones that terminate in a 2.5mm jack connector.
7 Bluetooth The PAW 5000 features Bluetooth connectivity. To activate Bluetooth streaming: 1. Hold the Back/Setup button (14) 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Bluetooth Settings and press the confirm button (10) 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Bluetooth Switch and press the confirm button (10) 4. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select On and press the confirm button (10) 5. Press the Back/Setup button (14) 6. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select List of Bluetooth and press the confirm button (10) 7. Turn on your Bluetooth headphone or speaker and activate the pairing mode. 8. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Scan for new device and press the confirm button (10) 9. When you see the name of your Bluettoth device press confirm (09) to stop scanning. 10. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select your Bluetooth device and press the confirm button (10) 11. When the PAW 5000 shows Connected, the devices are connected. 12. Press the Back/Setup button (14) three times to return to the main play screen. 6. Navigation The Lotoo PAW 5000 uses a folder-based navigation system. To create, populate and manage these folders: 1. Power on the Lotoo PAW Connect your Mac or PC to the USB 3.0 port on the PAW 5000 (found on the right hand side of the unit) using the included USB 3.0 cable. 3. When prompted to start the USB communication, use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Yes and press the confirm button (10) 4. The PAW 5000 will appear as a removable disk on the connected computer. 5. Create, populate and manage your music into folders. 6. When the data has finished transferring, eject the PAW 5000 using your computer s file management system. 7. Disconnect the PAW 5000 from your computer. 8. The PAW 5000 will now update the database. When prompted, press the Confirm button (10).
8 Once you have populated your Lotoo PAW 5000 with music, you can begin to navigate the folders using the PAW 5000s menus. To select a track: 1. From the main play screen, press the Music/Function button (13). 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Folder and press the confirm button (10). This will jump to the track currently playing (or paused). 3. Press the Back/Setup button (14) or select the folder icon to step back one level. Depending on how you have arranged your folders, this may take you back to a list of artists, or a list of albums by the currently playing artist. 4. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select your desired song and press the confirm button (10) to start playing. It is possible to view all songs on the Micro SD card. To do this: 1. From the main play screen, press the Music/Function button (13). 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select All and press the confirm button (10). 3. All music stored on the Micro SD will now appear in alphabetical order. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select your desired song and press the confirm button (10) to start playing. 7. Random Play The Lotoo PAW 5000 is capable of playing songs at random. To initiate random play: 1. From the main play screen, hold the Back/Setup button (14). 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Play Settings and press the 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Repeat Mode and press the 4. With random play initiated, the Lotoo PAW 5000 can play individual folders, or every song, on the install Micro SD card at random. To play songs in a folder at random: 1. After initiating random play, return to the main play screen. 2. Press the Music/Function button (13).
9 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Folder and press the confirm button (10). 4. Use the jog wheel (09) and Back/Setup button (14) to navigate to the desired folder. 5. Select a song with the jog wheel (09) and start it playing by pressing the The songs in this folder will now proceed to play in a random order. To play all the songs on the installed SD card at random: 1. After initiating random play, return to the main play screen. 2. Press the Music/Function button (13). 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select All and press the confirm button (10). 4. Select a song with the jog wheel (09) and start it playing by pressing the All the songs on the SD card will now proceed to play in a random order. 8. Playlists The Lotoo PAW 5000 allows the user to create and manage three individual playlists, populated by songs stored on the Micro SD card. To add a song to a playlist: 1. Navigate to the desired song using the jog wheel (09) and 2. When the desired song is found, highlight it using the jog wheel (09) and hold the 3. Select the desired playlist using the jog wheel (09) and press the confirm button (10) to add the song to that playlist. To play songs in a playlist: 1. From the main play screen, press the Musis/Function button (13) 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select the desired playlist and press the 3. Select a song using the jog wheel (09) and push the confirm button (10) to begin playing. The songs in the playlist will continue to play in sequence unless random play is initialised (see chapter 7 Random Play).
10 To manage songs in a playlist: 4. From the main play screen, press the Musis/Function button (13) 5. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select the desired playlist and press the 6. Use the jog wheel (09) to select play (to start the song playing), sort (to move a song forwards or backwards in the playlist sequence) or remove (to remove the song from the playlist) and press the 9. PMEQ The Lotoo PAW 5000 includes a parametric EQ (PMEQ) and Lotoo s proprietary ATE (Acoustic Timbre Embellisher) voicing algorithm. ATE uses DSP technology to apply Lotoo s studio-quality filters to the PAW The PMEQ or ATE can be used independently of each other but not both at the same time. Activating the ATE 1. From the main play screen, press the ATE/PMEQ button (15) 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select ATE and press the confirm button (10). 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select the desired ATE setting and press the Activation the PMEQ 1. From the main play screen, press the ATE/PMEQ button (15) 2. Use the track forward and track backwards buttons (07 and 08) along with the jog wheel (09) to adjust the name of the preset. 9. Press the confirm button (10) to save the name. Import/Export PMEQ Settings PAW 5000 can create and share PMEQ settings by importing and exporting them from their Micro SD card. To export a user preset to the Micro SD: 1. From the PMEQ screen, use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Export PMEQ and press the 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select the desired preset and press the 3. The preset will now be saved on the Micro SD card as a.bin file and can be copied to the users computer for sharing. To import a user preset to the PAW 5000: 1. Function Button The Lotoo PAW 5000 features a Function button that can be assigned to perform many different functions. To assign a function to the function button: 1. From the main play screen, hold the Back/Setup button (14). 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Fn Key Definition and press the
12 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select the function you wish to assign to the Function button. 4. Press the Back/Setup button (14) twice to return to the main play screen. To activate the desired function, hold the Music/Function (13) button when on the main play screen. 11. Sports Mode and the Running Armband Sports Mode The Lotoo PAW 5000 features an intelligent time-stretching feature that allows the listener to adjust the pace of their music by up to 20% (faster or slower) to suit the pace of their run. To activate Sports Mode: 1. From the main play screen, hold the Back/Setup button (14). 2. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to select Sports Mode Settings and press the 3. Use the Jog Wheel (09) to On and press the 4. Press the Back/Setup button (14) twice to return to the main play screen. 5. With a song playing, use the Jog Wheel (09) to adjust the tempo of music. 6. To turn sports mode, follow steps 1-3 but select Off from the Sports Mode Settings menu. The Running Armband The Lotoo PAW 5000 includes an armband and cradle to allow the listener to use the player while running. To set up the PAW 5000 for running: 1. Remove the packaging and cellophane wrapper from the armband and cradle. 2. Place the armband on a flat surface with the buckle on the left hand side and the padded flap face down. 3. Place the cradle on its back, with the protruding clip at the top. 4. Thread the armband through the cradle until it reaches the padded flap. Open the flap, slide the cradle as far as it will go to the left and close the padded flap. 5. Lift the armband up and pass the right hand strap over the padded flap and through the buckle to create a loop.
13 6. Place your arm in the loop, pull the band tight and fold it back on itself and attach. 12. Other Functions The Lotoo PAW 5000 s screen will turn off to conserve power after 30 seconds of inactivity. To turn the screen back on, press the power/lock button (16). With the screen off, the listener can still adjust volume by using the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons (05 and 06). These buttons can also be used to skip tracks back and forward when the screen is off. To skip forward, hold the Volume Up button. To skip backwards, hold the Volume Down button. 13. Updating The Lotoo PAW 5000 To update the firmware of the Lotoo PAW 5000: 1. Download the firmware from the support page at 2. Copy the PAW5000.COE file to the Micro SD card. 3.
