1 VR Development Platform The Qualcomm Snapdragon VR820 headset is a VR development platform based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (APQ8096) processor by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. Quick Start Guide Most VR headsets commercially available today are either tethered, or slot-in designs that use smartphones. The Qualcomm Snapdragon VR820 development kit is a standalone all-in-one VR headset with an OLED head mounted display (HMD) and an integrated Snapdragon 820 processor. It includes dual front-facing cameras and supports six degrees of freedom (6DoF). 6DoF motion tracking is done at a fast 800Hz rate using the integrated Hexagon DSP. This leaves the Snapdragon CPU and Adreno GPU free for computing and graphics processing. The Snapdragon VR820 development kit is designed to help software developers create more immersive VR experiences. 2 Snapdragon VR820 Headset Package Contents After opening the black Snapdragon VR820 carrying case, confirm the following items are present: Qualcomm Snapdragon VR820 Headset designed by Goertek Black headset with Velcro straps and counter balance Goertek Quick Charge power adapter USB 3.0 cable Lens cleaning cloth Quick Start Preparing the Snapdragon VR820 headset for Use 1. Thread the lateral and over-the-head straps through the loops on the top and sides of the headset. 2. Adjust the straps so that the headset fits comfortably and secure them using the Velcro connectors. 3. Remove the plastic covers from the front of the headset and both of the lenses. Powering on the headset 1. Next, press the gray POWER button located on the top of the headset until you see a green Goertek logo on the screen. The LED on the front of the headset will also turn blue. 2. Once the boot process is complete, a Snapdragon Launcher app will load and you will find yourself in an outer space environment with items you can select by moving your head. If all you see is stars and planets, touch the trackpad on the right side of the VR820 headset to recenter the interface. 3 Using the VR Launcher 1. After you power up the Snapdragon VR820 headset, a Snapdragon VR Launcher app will automatically launch and you will find yourself in an outer space environment. If all you see is stars and planets, touch the trackpad to recenter the interface. 2. Turn your head to select an item. Once the selected item has a green box around it, tap the trackpad lightly. The screen may turn black for five or more seconds while the app launches. Tip: If needed, touch the trackpad to recenter the interface. 3. To return to the VR Launcher, press the small BACK button at the top right-hand side of the headset. Powering down the headset After use, power down the Snapdragon VR820 headset by pressing the POWER button until a Power Off button appears on the screen. The headset should power down in a few seconds. You can also shutdown this device using ADB by typing the following text in the command line on your computer: adb root adb remount adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.action_request_shutdown --ez KEY_CONFIRM true --activity-clear-task Note: You need to unplug the USB cable after these commands have been sent, otherwise the device will boot again. Putting the headset to sleep/waking it up Quickly press the POWER button to put the headset to sleep. Press the power button again to wake the headset. Charging the headset 1. When the battery is getting low, the LED on the front of the Snapdragon VR820 headset will turn yellow. Attach a USB 3.0 cable to the provided Goertek power adapter and connect it to a wall outlet. 2. Next, plug the USB 3.0 cable into the USB jack on the bottom of the headset. The LED on the front of the headset will turn red to show the headset is charging. It takes about 3 hours to fully charge this device. 3. After charging is complete, the LED on the front of the headset will turn green to show the device is fully charged. Remove the USB cable from the headset before using it. The LED will turn blue to show the device is in use and not charging. 3

4 Install Vysor on your computer Vysor is a Chrome app that lets you view and control a Snapdragon VR820 headset using a computer and mouse. To install Vysor, follow these steps: 1. Connect your VR820 headset to a computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. 2. Open the Chrome browser and go to 3. Click Install and Add App. 4. Click the ADD TO CHROME button. 5. Click the LAUNCH APP button. You may want to right-click on the Blue Vysor icon in the task bar and select Pin to Taskbar. Using Vysor 1. Connect your VR820 headset to a computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. 2. The Vysor app should automatically launch and display the Snapdragon VR Launcher environment. Tip: If the images seen on the VR headset do not appear in the Vysor app, you should cover the proximity sensor between the two lenses with something that blocks light from entering. 3. Follow the steps below to use Vysor to connect to a Wi-Fi network and more. Rebooting the headset Press the POWER button until the white Power Off box appears on the screen. After a few seconds the headset will power down. Next, press and hold the POWER button until you see the Goertek logo. You can also reboot this device by typing adb reboot into the command prompt on your computer when this device is connected to a USB cable. Changing the default home screen from VR Launcher to the Android Home screen 1. Connect the Snapdragon VR820 headset to a computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. The Vysor app should automatically launch. 2. Type the following ADB command into the command prompt on your computer and press Enter: adb shell am start -S com.android.settings/.settings\$homesettingsactivity 3. An app selector will appear with two choices: Launcher and vrlauncher. 4. Make sure Launcher is selected and press and hold the BACK button on the headset until the Android Home screen appears. It will now be set as the default home screen. Do not try to use the Android Home screen with the VR headset. It will be rotated and cropped so it doesn t function well. 4

5 Connecting to a Wi-Fi network 1. Follow the steps above to get the Android Home screen to appear using Vysor. 2. Use your mouse to open the Apps folder and launch the Settings app. 3. Click on Wi-Fi and select the desired wireless access point. 4. Type the password for the desired wireless network and click on CONNECT. Changing the default home screen from Android to VR Launcher 1. Connect a VR820 headset to a computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. The Vysor app should automatically launch. 2. Type the following ADB command into the command prompt and press the Enter key: adb shell am start -S com.android.settings/.settings\$homesettingsactivity 3. An app selector will appear with two choices: Launcher and vrlauncher. 4. Make sure vrlauncher is selected and press and hold the BACK button on the headset until you see the background change. The VR Launcher will now be set as the default launch screen. Tip: You can also start the VR Launcher app from the Android all apps launcher. Getting an app to appear in the VR Launcher Application Manifest Changes The Application s main activity should have the following intent-filter for the app to show up in the library list of the launcher. <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.main" /> <category android:name="com.qti.intent.category.snapdragon_vr"/> </intent-filter> Note: The current version of the launcher reads the list only once on boot-up and doesn t dynamically update. Launcher s featured and favorite overrides The current version of the launcher reads from /sdcard/resources/featured.txt and /sdcard/resources/favoriteapps.txt for populating items up on the Home Screen. Featured list is for the items in the center of the screen. The first entry in the list is the main featured item. FavoriteApps list defines items in the left column. These files are in JSON format with each entry having a label path icon_path The label to use The package name of the Application A relative path (from /sdcard/resources/) to the graphic to use. The Main Featured Entry uses a graphic in 3:1 aspect ratio. The rest of the entries use 2:1. Note: The current version of the launcher reads the list only once on boot-up and doesn t dynamically update. 5

6 Important safety tips The Snapdragon VR820 headset creates an immersive virtual reality experience that blocks the view of your surroundings. For the safest experience, remain seated or stationary when using this product. Take special care to ensure that you are not near furniture, stairs, balconies, windows or other items that you can bump into or knock down when using this product. 6
