4 Introduction An Xperia X2 EXE Panelizer is a pre built DLL (SonyEricssonPanel.dll) and CAB packager to create a Panel installation package for a native executable application installed on the phone. No C/C++ programming knowledge is required to create an EXE native Panel. Getting Started Open the Visual Studio solution file named ExePanelizer.sln. This solution holds the CABinstaller project that will package the pre built SonyEricssonPanel.dll with custom registry settings and other resources. This is the main project for this tutorial and includes a small Panel that can be deployed and installed on the Xperia X2 phone. File System Choose the Exe Panelizer project in the Solution Explorer. Right click and choose View >File System. This will open the File System Explorer and show all files and directories that will be installed from your CAB file. 5 The Calendar folder (Program Files Folder/Panels/Calendar) will show what files will be installed. SonyEricssonPanel.dll The DLL necessary for rendering an native executable file. These are the bare minimum files needed to create a native executable Panel. Note that with the exception of the SonyEricssonPanel.dll, the names of files do not need to follow the naming convention above. All file names are specified in the mandatory registry keys for a Panel (see chapter Registry values ). Registry values Choose the EXE Panelizer project in the Solution Explorer. 6 Right click and choose View >Registry. This will open the registry editor and show you all the registry values installed from your CAB file. Installation key for this project is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/SonyEricsson/PanelManager/Panels/Calendar. All Panels needs to be based under the Panels key for Panel Manager to find them. Mandatory values in the EXE Panel key: DLL Location of the DLL file to be used (normally installed by the CAB file) Landscape Location of the Landscape screenshot picture to be used LargeLandscape Location of the large landscape screenshot picture to be used Portrait Location of the portrait screenshot picture to be used LargePortrait Location of the large portrait screenshot picture to be used Name Name of the Panel seen in Panel Manager, should be the same as the key value (in this case Calendar) DisableWait Internal value used by the DLL, should be set to 1 for Native Panels RequiredVersion Version number of the Panel Manager that the Panel was built for. Building the EXE Panel Make sure that the solution configuration is set to Release. Right click the EXE Panelizer project in the Solution Explorer and select Build. This will produce a CAB installer file located in the Release folder of the project that can be deployed and installed on the Xperia X2 phone. Copyright 2009 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications 7

8 Launching an EXE Panel on the Xperia X2 phone This section explains how to launch an EXE Panel on the Xperia X2 phone. Note that the modifications made to the Exe Panelizer CAB project in previous chapter should not be applied when downloading the CAB file to the phone. To deploy the CAB file to the Xperia X2 phone, connect the phone to the PC using the micro USB data cable. This will trigger the device synchronization software, ActiveSync if running Windows XP or Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) if running Windows Vista, and automatically connect the phone to the PC. The phone file system is now available through the Windows Explorer shell extension Mobile Device (Windows XP) or Portable Devices (Windows Vista). Go to the output directory of the CAB installer project (Exe Panelizer tutorial\release) and copy the file ExePanelizer.CAB to any directory on your mobile phone. Install the file by simply clicking on it in File Explorer (started from Start Menu >Programs >File Explorer) in the phone. After installation, press the Panel button on the phone to launch the Panel Manager application. Configure one of the available slots to use the Calendar Panel and then launch the Panel by selecting it in the Panel Manager grid. The Calendar Panel should now be displayed and ready for testing purposes. To make additional changes to the files used by the Exe Panelizer, there is no need the reinstall the CAB file every time. Just copy the updated files to the DemoPanel directory on the phone, close the Panel by pressing the Panel button and then restart the Panel. Copyright 2009 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications 8
