2 Arista Networks 700E Switch and Linecard Optical Cabling Guide This cabling applications guide will assist you with the design of a fiber optic cabling system for Arista Networks 700E series data center switches. The 700E series switches and line cards feature software configurable 0/0/00G channels over the same interface port. The 700E is offered in two chassis versions. The DCS-70 is a slot, 7U chassis that accepts linecards and the DCS-708 is an 8 slot, U chassis that accepts 8 linecards. Arista offers different linecard variations: Arista DCS-700E-DM-LC is a port 00GbE SR0 MXP linecard with embedded optics. The ports are f MTP s that can be configured as x 0G, x 0G, or x 00G channels. A fully utilized MXP linecard requires 88 fibers. Arista DCS-700E-6Q-LC is a 6 port QSFP+ 0G linecard for 0/0G. The fiber ports are f MTP s that can be configured as x 0G or x 0G when used with 0/0G transition modules. A fully utilized linecard requires 88 fibers. Arista DCS-700E-7S-LC is a 8 port SFP+ for /0GbE and port 00GbE SR0 MXP linecard. The fiber ports are 8 LC duplex and x f MTP. The MXP ports can be configured as 0/0/00G ports. A fully utilized linecard requires fibers. Arista DCS-700E-8S-LC is a 8 port SFP+ linecard for wire-speed /0GbE. The fiber ports are 8 LC duplex. A fully utilized linecard requires 96 fibers. These Arista 700E series are typically deployed in a two tier leaf-spline configuration with 700E spline switches connected to 700S and/or 70S series leaf switches. 00G Switch to Switch Links With 00GbE links between 700E switches with DCS-700E-DM-LC or DCS-700E-7S-LC linecards, a f MTP jumper cable is run directly beween the MXP ports on the switch linecards. This cabling is best for inter-switch links when both switches are in close proximity, usually within the same row of cabinets. 3 Bill of Material for Figure. OM f MTP to f MTP Non-Pinned Jumper; Plenum Cable; xxx Meters In larger networks where high fiber count MTP trunks are deployed, a structured cabling approach provides a scaleable and quickly reconfigured network. Inter-connection points between permanently installed trunks make changes and additions as easy as changing or adding jumpers. The trunks in these examples are f with f MTP legs, but can be higher counts as long they are increments of with f MTP legs. The Switch interface is f MTP, MXP port to f MTP QFSP+ port on Arista 700S-6 switches (x 0GbE+ ports) and 70S-6 switches(x 0GbE+ ports). Danco Road, Putnam, CT 0660 Phone: opticonx.com

4 With 0GbE directly connected links between 700E switches with DCS-700E-CM-LC or MXP ports on DCS-700E-7S-LC linecards and QFSP+ ports on 700S-6 and/or 70S-6 switches, a f MTP to x 8f transition cable is run directly beween the MXP ports on the switch linecards and QFSP+ ports on the leaf switches. This cabling is best for inter-switch links when both switches are in close proximity, usually within the same row of cabinets and all 0GbE ports are on the same leaf switch. Figure : 0G Directly Connected Switches Bill of Material for Figure. OM f MTP(non-pinned) to x 8f MTP(non-pinned) Transition Harness; Method ; Plenum Cable; xxx Meters; Breakout Legs PXTDB99X0FXXX In larger data centers where distances are greater and fiber counts are higher and switches are more widely deployed, a structured cabling system provides a much better approach to cable management, utilization, and organization. Trunks are run between inter-connect points near the switches. From there, transition modules, and jumpers complete the connection to switches. Different length jumpers can be used to connect to individual 0GbE ports located on same or different Leaf switches. They are suited to small and mid sized installations where Leaf switches are clustered in close proximity to the Spline switch. A f MTP to x f MTP transition cable is run to a transition module, central to the Leaf switches. From this inter-connect point, jumpers are run to 0GbE ports on Leaf switches. This approach is best suited when connecting to multiple leaf switches in the same row, but in the different cabinets than the 700E switch. 6 0G Spline to Leaf Links The MXP ports on 700E series linecards can also be internally switch to transmit 0GbE to leaf switches or 700E linecards with SFP+ ports. The switch interface is f MTP, MXP port to duplex LC SFP+ ports on Arista 700S-, 700S-6, 70S-, 70S- and 70S-6 switches. Unlike 0/00G cabling systems, directly connected switches are not practical. Structured cabling and port cabling are the considered approaches. Figure 6 shows a structured cabling approach and is best in medium and large scale network installations. 0GbE configured MXP ports are inter-connected to f trunks with f MTP legs and f MTP to LC transition modules, centrally located to the Leaf switches. Duplex LC jumpers complete the 0GbE link to SFP+ ports on the Leaf switch. Various length jumpers can be used to reach SFP+ ports on multiple switches in different cabinets. 7 When the 700E switch is in proximity to the 0GbE Leaf switches and the cable runs are short, as may be the case in smaller network installation, a structured cabling port linked approach can be used. A f MTP to x f MTP transition cable is run to a MTP to LC transition module central the leaf switches. From this inter-connect point, jumpers are run to 0GbE ports on Leaf switches. It requires a different cabling scheme than the MXP ports in our previous cabling examples. The fiber ports are f MTP s that can be configured as x 0G or x 0G ports. A fully utilized linecard requires 88 fibers. This linecard can use the same structured cabling trunks(f with f MTP legs) as the MXP configured linecard ports. Only the inter-connect portion of the link is different. 0G, x transition modules inter-connect trunks and switches with f MTP jumpers. Danco Road, Putnam, CT 0660 Phone: opticonx.com
