4 Data Center Topology & 4G/G Data Center The TIA/EIA-942 Data Center Standard The TIA/EIA-942 specified the requirements and guidelines for the physical layer infrastructure of a data center, including specifications on cabling design, network design and facilities design. The standard breaks down the data center into functional areas, described in the following diagram: TIA-942 Offices, Operations Center, Support Rooms Horizontal Distribution Area (HDA) The horizontal distribution area (HDA) acts as the distribution point for horizontal cabling to the equipment distribution area (EDA). They also host switches for connecting to the EDA and SAN. The TIA/EIA-942 recommends locating these switches close to patch panels to minimize patch cord lengths. Like the MDA, the standard requires the HDA to contain separate racks for fiber and copper. Horizontal Cabling Telecom Room (Office & Operations Center LAN Switches) Horizontal Distribution Area (HDA) (LAN / SAN / KVM Switches) Zone Distribution Area (ZDA) The zone distribution area (ZDA) is an optional area used in large data centers to serve as a consolidation point within the horizontal cabling between the horizontal distribution area (HDA) and the equipment distribution area (EDA). They typically house passive devices that allows for frequent reconfiguration, providing additional flexibility. Zone Distribution Area (ZDA) Horizontal Cabling Horizontal Cabling Equipment Distribution Area (EDA) (Rack / Cabinet) OLABS. Data Center Solutions Equipment Distribution Area (EDA) The equipment distribution area (EDA) is the area that racks and enclosures are deployed to house servers, and patch panels where the horizontal cabling from the HDA is terminated. These racks and cabinets should be housed in hot and cold aisle configurations for an improved airflow system. 2
5 Compliant Date Center Backbone Cabling Horizontal Cabling Carriers Backbone Cabling Backbone Cabling Entrance Room (ER) (Carrier Equipment & Demarcation) Main Distribution Area (MDA) (Routers, Backbone, LAN / SAN Switches, PBX, M3 Muxes) Carriers Computer Room Entrance Room (ER) The Entrance Room is the demarcation point between carrier equipment and the data center's structured cabling system. They are usually located close to the main distribution area (MDA), as these zones are connected via backbone cabling. This room should be large enough to accommodate more than one service provider and be scalable for future growth. Backbone Cabling Backbone Cabling Main Distribution Area (MDA) Horizontal Distribution Area (HDA) (LAN / SAN / KVM Switches) Horizontal Cabling Equipment Distribution Area (EDA) (Rack / Cabinet) Horizontal Distribution Area (HDA) (LAN / SAN / KVM Switches) Horizontal Cabling Equipment Distribution Area (EDA) (Rack / Cabinet) The main distribution area (MDA) is the main point of distribution for the data center's structured cabling system. It houses core routers and switches for LAN and SAN infrastructures. Per TIA/EIA-942, every data center shall include at least one MDA and it specifies separate racks for fiber and copper. 6 Are you ready for Next Generation 4G/G? The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has ratified the IEEE 82.3ba standard for next-generation 4G/G Ethernet in June 2. It provides recommendations for 4G/G transmission with multimode and singlemode fibers. For multimode fibers, it specifies the use of parallel optics transmission instead of serial transmission. It also specifies OM3 and OM4 as the only multimode fibers used, by terminating with the designated 2- or 24-Fiber high density MPO connector. This connector supports parallel transmission used in high speed 4G/G Ethernet for the next generation network. Parallel Optics in 4G/G The laser optimized multimode 4G/G structured cabling employs parallel optics transmission. It is a type of data transmission method that simultaneously transmits and receives data over multiple optical fibers. The signals are splitted and transmitted over multiple optical fibers, and joined back together at the receiver. They differ from serial optics transmission where data is transmitted in a sequence over a single fiber. In the G application, the 24-fiber MPO connector will be utilized where fibers will be used to transmit and fibers will be used to receive, while the remaining 4 fibers will be blanked. 4G: x 2F MPO Fiber Chart Fiber colour Optical Trancelver Optical Trancelver Blue Tx- Rx- Orange Tx-2 Rx-2 Green Tx-3 Rx-3 Brown Tx-4 Rx-4 Not used N/A-5 N/A-5 Not used N/A-6 N/A-6 Not used N/A-7 N/A-7 Not used N/A-8 N/A-8 Yellow Rx-9 Tx-9 Violet Rx- Tx- Rose Rx- Tx- Aqua Rx-2 Tx-2 4G 2-Fiber MTP connector. 7 OM3 & OM4 Fiber on 4G/G OM3 and OM4 5/25µm multimode fibers are the only media types that offer scalability for migrating to next-generation data centers. They are currently deployed in G applications for serial transmission. With polarity properly managed, these fiber types can be migrated to 4G/G applications for parallel optic transmissions. Within the TIA/EIA-942 specification, it recommends the use of OM3 fiber for backbone cabling in the data center. They offer a more balanced and cost-effective transmission that supports higher bandwidth over longer distances than singlemode fiber. Tighter link-loss parameters over the whole structured cabling system become crucial. Extra optical loss caused by fiber cable bends during cable installation or inferior connector end-face polishing will become a critical issue that will affect the overall link-loss for achieving 4G/G high speed objective. It has led to deployments of pre-connectorized low loss optical fiber cabling solution with bend-insensitive fiber cable terminations, which will maximize the performance and bring true reliable high speed transmission for 4G/G networks. 22 FAQs Q: What are the advantages of fiber optics over copper in the data center? A: There are numerous of advantages in fiber optic cabling in the data center. In general, fiber optics provides higher bandwidth and speed, which has been necessitated by the increasing demand and requirements of storage and bandwidth. Olabs can provide you with a customized solution for your fiber optic connectivity. Q: What is the difference between singlemode and multimode fiber? A: Singlemode fiber has a smaller fiber core, typically at 9µm in diameter, and typically used for transmitting data over longer distances. Multimode fiber has a larger fiber core, typically at 5µm or 62.5µm in diameter and ideal for shorter distances. The IEEE82.3ba has specified OM3 and OM4 multimode as the preferred fiber for use in 4G and G transmission. Q: What are bend-insensitive fibers and are they required in the data center? A: Bend-insensitive fiber cabling allows for sharp bends in fiber cabling without additional losses in the data center. They are recommended in tight areas of deployments. Q: What is insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL)? A: Insertion loss is an important performance indicator of a fiber optic interconnection. This is the loss of light signal, measured in decibels (db), during the insertion of a fiber optic connector. Return loss is the loss of light signal that is reflected back to the original light source. At Olabs, we ensure that your fiber cabling items and assemblies will meet the most stringent insertion loss and return loss requirement you need. Our leadership in fiber optic technology allows you to control the loss of every single interconnection. Q: What is an MPO connector? A: The MPO connector is a multi-fiber connector that stands for Multi-Fibre Push On connector. It presents a high-density solution, accommodating up to 24 fibers in one MPO connector, saving you precious space in the data center. Q: Are there issues I need to be aware of when ordering MPO products? A: Yes, with Olabs FiberFlex portfolio, you can enjoy the flexibility of customization to your exact needs. You may specify connector ends, cable lengths, cable & fiber types, and even specific staggered lengths when you need fanouts to individual connectors.
