Printed and published in the U.K. About this Guide This manual applies to i-on Update Utility software version This version can be used for the i-on40 and the i-onex range of control units. A Note about screen displays Some of the keypad screen displays shown in this book are for the standby screen, which shows the type of control unit on the top line. Although the book shows i-on160ex, the text will be different if you are using another control unit.

3 Introduction The i-on Update Utility software allows you to update the main operating software on the i-on40 and the i-onex range of alarm system control units. The software runs on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, and communicates with the i-on control unit over USB cable. The control unit printed circuit board (pcb) provides a socket for a Mini-B USB plug. Note: i-on Update Utility will not work with a usb hub. Make sure that you use a primary usb port on your PC or laptop. Obtaining i-on Update Utility You can obtain the i-on Update Utility from the Support Downloads pages at Note that you must log on as a registered member of the Touchpoint Partner Programme in order to see those pages. You can also obtain updated control unit software, bootloader and language files from the same pages. These files are often supplied in compressed form as.zip files. Once downloaded you can open a.zip file in Windows simply by double clicking on it. Requirements Any PC or laptop running Windows XP sp3, Vista or Windows 7. At least 2MB of free hard disk. A free USB port. A USB cable ending with a Mini B plug. The other end of the cable must be connected to a spare USB port on the computer that is going to run i-on Update Utility. Note: Installation 1. To install i-on Update Utility you must be logged onto your PC with an account that has administrator s rights. 2. Remove any older versions of the Update Utility BEFORE installing a newer version. To install i-on Update Utility: 1. Download the installation file and save the file to a convenient location on your PC (for example the desktop). The name of the installation file ends with.msi. This is an executable file (like files whose name ends in.exe ). 2. Run the setup file by double clicking on its icon. The screen shows a setup wizard: 3. Click Next. The setup wizard asks you for a location on your hard disk to install the i-on Update Utility software: Page 3

4 The default location is C:\Program Files\Cooper Security\i-on Update Utility. If you accept the default and click OK then the installation program will create the required folders. If you wish to run the software from another location click the Browse button and navigate to your preferred folder. 4. Click Next. The setup wizard shows you a final screen to make sure that you want to go ahead: 6. Click Close. The i-on Update Utility is now installed on your PC. The installation software places an icon on your desktop, looking like this: (Click Back if you want to retrace your steps to an earlier stage. Click Cancel if you want to stop the installation.) 5. Click Next. Note: Your PC may show a User Access Control dialog box asking you to give permission for i-on Update Utility to install itself. Click Yes. The setup wizard shows a progress screen: You can start the i-on Update Utility by double clicking on the icon. When setup has finished the setup wizard shows its final screen: Page 4

5 Using i-on Update Utility Before you Begin If you are updating a control unit that is already installed and in service, then take a backup of the system configuration before updating the control unit software. You can do this either through i-on Downloader or, on an i-on160 or i-on40, using the web browser. IMPORTANT! When updating control unit software check that the bootloader version currently on the control unit is correct for the new version of software you intend to install (see page 11). If it is not correct, then update the bootloader before updating the main software (see below). Update to any new language versions last. Updating the Bootloader The bootloader is an essential piece of software that resides on the control unit and controls the way that the Update Utility communicates with the control unit. The bootloader version must be correct for both the version of control unit software being loaded and also for the version of Update Utility in use. CAUTION: Installing the incorrect version of bootloader can lead to the control unit ceasing to work. To Update the Bootloader At the PC: 1. Obtain the file holding the new version of bootloader (see page 3). Notes: 1. Each control unit has its own specific bootloader, see page The bootloader file ends with a.bin extension. 3. The filename itself should give you the control unit and version number. 2. Plug the USB cable into a free USB port (leave the Mini B plug free). 3. Run i-on Update Utility by clicking on its icon. i-on Update Utility displays its opening window: At the control unit: 1. Enter the installer menu and then remove mains power. (If you do not enter the installer menu you will start a tamper alarm in the next step.) 2. Open the end station lid and disconnect the battery. 3. Plug the Mini B connector on the USB cable into the USB socket on the control unit pcb. 4. Connect the battery and then briefly short the Kick Start pins together (use a wire link or the end of a small screwdriver). The control unit will start up and the heartbeat LED should flash rapidly to show that the control unit is operating in update mode. The red LEDs on all the keypads will also flash rapidly to show that the system cannot be used. At the PC: The i-on Update Utility window should show that the control unit is connected, by showing for example i-on160ex - Connected below the i-on logo: Page 5

6 If the i-on Update Utility window shows a red error message then remove and immediately re-insert the USB Mini B connector on the pcb. The Bootloader Version section of the window shows you the version number of the bootloader currently installed in the control unit. 1. Click Update Bootloader. The i-on Update Utililty shows the following dialogue box: 7. Click OK. The i-on Update Utility loads the selected bootloader file into the control unit. After a few seconds the i-on Update Utility shows: 2. Click the Browse button. The i-on Update Utility shows a file browser window. 3. Navigate to the bootloader file you wish to load and select it. 4. Click Open. The Select File to Load dialog box shows the selected file in the Panel Software Location field: 5. Click on the Send to Panel button. The i-on Update Utility shows a warning dialog: 6. If you have already made a backup of the system configuration (or it is not necessary to do so) then click Yes. The i-on Update Utility asks for confirmation: 8. Leave the USB cable connected to the control unit and remove all power from the control unit. 9. Re-apply power to the control unit. 10. Click OK on the dialog box when you the control unit has powered back up. The control unit is now ready for you to update the main software and the languages, see the next page. Updating the Control Unit Software At the PC: 1. Obtain the file holding the control unit operating software that you wish to install (see page 3). Note: Operating software for the control unit is held in a file with a.bin extension. The filename itself should give you the control unit and version number. 2. Plug the USB cable into a free USB port (leave the Mini B plug free). 3. Run i-on Update Utility by clicking on its icon. i-on Update Utility displays its opening window: Page 6

7 update mode. The red LEDs on all the keypads will also flash rapidly to show that the system is out of service. At the PC: The i-on Update Utility window should show that the control unit is connected, by showing for example i-on160ex - Connected below the i-on logo: 4. Click the Browse button. i-on Update Utility displays a standard file browser window. 5. Navigate to the.bin file holding the control unit operating software you wish to load. NOTE: Make sure you select a the correct file for the type of control unit. Select the file and click OK. When the i-on Update Utility window shows Connected click Update control panel software. You should see: At the control unit: 1. Enter the installer menu and then remove mains power. (If you do not enter the installer menu you will start a tamper alarm in the next step.) 2. Open the end station lid and disconnect the battery. 3. Plug the Mini B connector on the USB cable into the USB socket on the control unit pcb. 4. Connect the battery and then briefly short the Kick Start pins together (use a wire link or the end of a small screwdriver). 8 The display initially shows: i-on Update Utility Followed after several seconds by the standby screen, for example: 2. Click OK. i-on Update Utility starts sending the.bin file to the control unit. You should see a progress bar like this: When the i-on Update Utility has completed sending the.bin file the PC screen should show Update Complete : 3. Click OK. At the control unit: 1. Disconnect the USB cable. The heartbeat LED stops flashing. 2. Remove all power, including the battery. 3. Reconnect the battery, then the mains. The heartbeat LED starts flashing (about once per second), and the red LEDs on the keypads flash rapidly. If the end station lid is open then the control unit starts a tamper alarm. i At this point, the keypad LEDs glow steadily, and if the control unit lid was open then the sounders will still be giving a tamper alarm. 4. Key in the default access code (1234 for four digit access codes, for six digit access codes). The sounders fall silent. The keypad displays shows, for example: 5. Press. The display shows: 6. Press. The display shows the standby screen, for example: The navigation key will glow a steady red until you re-fit the control unit lid and acknowledge the alert. The control unit is now ready for programming. Updating Languages The EUR versions of i-on range control units have nine fixed language slots. Each slot holds a file containing all the text displays for the control unit in one of a standard set of languages. You cannot change the language held within any of the first nine slots, but you can update those language files when better translations come along. In addition, there is also one free slot that can be used for any language for which there is a translation of the display text. To update an existing language At the PC: 1. Obtain the file holding the language text strings that you wish to install. Notes: 1. Keypad displays for each language are held in a file with a.lng extension. 2. The filename itself should give you the language and version number. Page 8

9 3. You can use the same language file with any of the i-onex range control units. 2. Plug the USB cable into a free USB port (leave the Mini B plug free). 3. Run i-on Update Utility by clicking on its icon. i-on Update Utility displays its opening window. At the control unit: 1. Enter the installer menu and then remove mains power. (If you do not enter the installer menu you will start a tamper alarm in the next step.) 2. Open the end station lid and disconnect the battery. 3. Plug the Mini B connector on the USB cable into the USB socket on the control unit pcb. 4. Connect the battery and then briefly short the Kick Start pins together (use a wire link or the end of a small screwdriver). The control unit will start up and the heartbeat LED should flash rapidly to show that the control unit is operating in update mode. The red LEDs on all the keypads will also flash rapidly to show users that the system is out of service. Note the Languages section: The left hand column shows the languages (and their versions) available on the control unit. If the Update Utility window is too small to show all the languages then you can use the scroll bar at the right to scroll down and see the others. 1. In the Languages section, click the Select File link of the language you wish to update. i-on Update Utility displays a standard file browser window. 2. Navigate to the new version of.lng file that you wish to load. Select the file and click Open. The right hand side of the language section should the name of the.lng file. 3. Click Update languages. You should see: At the PC: The i-on Update Utility window should show that the control unit is connected, by showing for example i-on160ex - Connected below the i-on logo: 4. Click OK. i-on Update Utility starts sending the.lng file to the control unit. You should see a progress bar like this: Page 9

10 When the i-on Update Utility has completed sending the.lng file the PC screen should show: four digit access codes, for six digit access codes). The sounders fall silent. The control unit is now ready for programming. To add a language The procedure for adding an additional language follows most of the same steps as updating a language. However, when selecting the additional language click on the Select File link under the heading Additional Language. The rest of the steps remain the same. 5. Click OK. At the control unit: 1. Disconnect the USB cable. The heartbeat LED stops flashing. 2. Remove all power, including the battery. 3. Reconnect the battery, then the mains. The heartbeat LED starts flashing (about once per second), and the red LEDs on the keypads flash rapidly. If the end station lid is open then the control unit starts a tamper alarm.
