3 Vess A2000 Series Sony RealShot Advanced VMS Surveillance Solution Introduction Overview This document provides an overview of the Promise Vess A2000 Series NVR Storage Appliance. It includes a test case that simulate a large scale network based surveillance solution. The test case utilizes Sony RealShot Manager Advanced VMS to determine performance results. This document also includes key performance indicators and test results for reference and comparison. 1

4 Vess A2000 NVR Storage Appliance Promise Technologies Purpose Purpose of this document is to demonstrate the capabilities of Vess A2000 Series platform, in optimally utilizing the resources for NVR usage. This note gives the detailed understanding of overall Vess A2000 Series platform and Sony RealShot Manager Advanced VMS based surveillance solution. The monitor data indicates the improved performance results using same or similar hardware components. Scope Scope of this document is to create and test an IP camera based surveillance solution using the Promise Vess A2000 Series NVR Storage Appliance with the Promise RAID platform running a Sony RealShot Manager Advanced VMS software solution. This note limits itself within the resource intense test configurations intended to simulate a real use large scale surveillance application environment. It does not test and verify every given matrix of video and hardware variables. Audience Audience of this document includes design and deployment Engineers, as well as persons involved in sale and marketing of Vess A2000 Series based Sony RealShot Manager Advanced solutions. 5 Vess A2000 Series Sony RealShot Advanced VMS Surveillance Solution Promise Vess A2000 Series System The Vess A2000 NVR storage appliance is specially engineered for medium to large scale IP video surveillance deployment. The subsystems provide continuous recording and playback operation for networked installations of 32 to 100 High-Definition IP cameras. The Vess A2000 Series includes the robust and market tested Promise RAID engine, Intel based server platform, industrial grade housing, smart sensors thermal and electrical enclosure protection, N+1 power redundancy, a choice of Linux or Windows operating systems, and intuitive web-based graphical user interface and command line utility for simplified system administration. Promise Technology Inc is a longtime market leader of RAID based storage solution. Hardware Components This document presents two systems for testing: Vess A2600 NVR Storage Appliance 3U 16-Bay system that includes: Intel Xeon E3-1245V2 (CPU Benchmark: 8942) 8GB DDR3 RAM. Four gigabit network ports Vess A2200 NVR Storage Appliance2U 6-Bay system that includes: Intel i (CPU benchmark: 4360) 4GB DDR3 RAM. Four gigabit network ports Operating System 64bit Windows Embedded Standard 7 + Service Pack 1 RAID Engine This test utilizes all drives in single Logical Drive in a RAID 5 arrangement. 3

6 Vess A2000 NVR Storage Appliance Promise Technologies Sony RealShot Manager Advanced VMS Overview RealShot Manager Advance is a Video Management Software (VMS) from Sony. Software Software components include: RealShot Manager Advanced Server Runs as a server and enables operation of up to 32 network cameras. RealShot Manager Advanced Server is used to monitor images, search and play back recordings. A license is required for the server in which RealShot Manager Advanced Server is installed. RealShot Manager Advanced Client Runs as a remote client for RealShot Manager Advanced Server and RealShot Manager Lite. RealShot Manager Lite Runs as a server and enables operation network cameras, as well as monitor images, search and play back recordings with limitations on the number of cameras that can be connected. The test environment used for this document used RealShot Manager Advanced Server and Client only. 4

All Sony RealShot Manager Advanced software components are installed on the Vess A2000, including, the recording server, management server and management client. RAID 5 + Spare 6

9 Vess A2000 Series Sony RealShot Advanced VMS Surveillance Solution Test Matrix and Criteria To evaluate different aspect of the solution, the test is divided into three parts, Platform Performance Tests, Background Activity Tests and a test with Expansion of the storage capacity. Conditions to obtain the results includes: CPU utilization: CPU utilization must remain below 70%. Data loss: Data loss must be less than 5%. Disk write latency: The average of the disk write latency is less than 200 ms, and the maximum of the disk write latency is less than 1000 ms. Recording status: Recording is under over-write status. 7

It is intended to check the stability and performance of the Vess A2600 system. Video stream configurations used in this test are: Codec: H.264 Resolution: 1920 x 1080 FPS: 15 Bitrate: 4 Mbps Observation and Highlights Test result establishes that Vess A2600 system is able to maintain the average throughput of about 60 MB/s, while processing 120 cameras at full HD resolution. CPU usage stays below 20%, and no major fluctuation is observed. Relatively low CPU utilization leaves enough room to run other user applications. 8

It is intended to check the stability and performance of the Vess A2200 system. Video stream configurations used in this test are: Codec: H.264 Resolution: 1920 x 1080 FPS: 15 Bitrate: 4 Mbps Observation and Highlights Test result establishes that Vess A2200 system is able to maintain the average throughput of about 40 MB/s, while processing 76 cameras at full HD resolution. CPU usage stays below 20%, and no major fluctuation is observed. Relatively low CPU utilization leaves enough room to run other user applications. 9

It is observed that although better than compatiters, Vess A2200 does not satisfy in this regard, due to the CPU limitation. By attaching additional VGA card with video decoding offload, Vess A2200 is able to provide satisfactory performance. 18 Vess A2000 NVR Storage Appliance Promise Technologies Background Activity Tests Recording during Rebuilding Overview This test is to verify system functioning and stability while the Logical Drive is Rebuilding. Whenever a Disk Drive within a Logical Drive fails; the rebuild process of the RAID system is triggered and begins rebuilding the missing data. The recovered data is written either on a spare Disk Drive, or on the replaced one. Expected behavior from the Recording Appliance is to be available for recording, while the rebuilding process works in the background. Minimal drop in performance is expected. Video stream configurations used in this test are: Codec: H.264 Res: 1920 x 1080 FPS: 30 Bitrate: 4 Mbps Observation and Highlights It is observed that both Vess A2600 and Vess A2200 ran stable throughput the test. Whenever a Hard Disk Drive of a RAID enclosure dies or stops working, Whole RAID volume is degraded into Critical mode. Note: It is suggested to replace the faulty disk drive as soon as possible. Expected behavior from the Recording Appliance is to be available for recording, while minimal drop in performance is expected. Video stream configurations used in this test are: Codec: H.264 Res: 1920 x 1080 FPS: 30 Bitrate: 4 Mbps Observation and Highlights It is observed that both Vess A2600 and Vess A2200 ran stable throughput the test. When the test unit is abruptly shut down, it is expected to resume the normal operation without any impact on performance, once power on. 21 Vess A2000 Series Sony RealShot Advanced VMS Surveillance Solution Expansion Overview Most of surveillance installations include many cameras that are recorded through NVR system, as Vess A2000 series. But at times the storage space within the NVR system is not sufficient to store all cameras. PROMISE also provides solution for storage expansion via series of home developed RAID Storage Appliance subsystem. This test usage PROMISE RAID Storage Appliance subsystem Vess R2600fiS, to evaluate the storage expansion feature. Whereas Number of supported cameras increases with Vess A2200, due to the increase in number of hard disk drives in Vess R2000 unit. 24 Vess A2000 NVR Storage Appliance Promise Technologies Conclusion and Observation Major requirement of Surveillance Recording Servers are: Stability: Stability of Surveillance Recording Server is very important for critical safety and security related applications. A Surveillance Recording Server System should maintain stable operation for long periods of time. RAID Storage Throughput: Storage data throughput is typically the first performance bottleneck encountered in Surveillance Servers. A surveillance setup generates a complex data patterns affected by three factors, number of cameras, camera frame rate (fps) and data size (resolution). With advancements in recording technology, HD format surveillance cameras are available and affordable for large scale deployments. A storage server must match the data size and complexity of HD cameras setup. Test results show that Promise Vess A2000 Series NVR Storage Appliance operated with a high degree of stability throughout the test period. The Vess A2000 Series also achieved high storage throughput with a reasonable level of resource usage. 22
