4 Executive Summary The following report contains the performance results of Milestone Certified Solution tests performed on the HP Z2 Mini workstation. This solution was supporting the Milestone XProtect Smart Client 2017 R1, running as a stand alone workstation enhanced by the Intel Quick Synch Video hardware acceleration capabilities which are built into the HP Z2 Mini. We also tested the workstation as a standalone NVR with XProtect Express 2017 R1. The performance of the integrated solution was tested in multiple resolutions from 1080p to 8 Megapixel (3840x2160), and proved to display 200% percent more video, and record upto 20 individual 8 Megapixel cameras using video motion detection when using hardware acceleration. The HP Z-series of workstations fully support the most recent versions of Milestone XProtect, and the Z-2 Mini and Z240 models support all of the advanced hardware acceleration features built into the Smart Client, and advanced Recording Server software. 5 NVIDIA Quadro M620 Windows 10 Pro Enabling Intel Quick Synch Decoding, processing, and displaying large amounts of H.264 encoded multi-megapixel video in full frame rate is an incredibly demanding computational task. The XProtect Smart Client application can display dozens of high definition video streams in a single window, all asking by default to be displayed in full resolution and at full frame rate. The XProtect Recording Server by default decodes and processes all incoming streams of video to record based upon video motion detection. To lower the impact of these operations on the CPU, Milestone has partnered with Intel to take advantage of their Intel HD Graphics functionality built-into the most recent generation of CPUs. For workstations and servers that can support this feature, it will dramatically improve the performance of the XProtect Smart Client and the XProtect Recording Server, allowing both solutions to handle more high definition cameras. By default, the Intel HD Graphics features of the HP Z2 Mini workstation were not enabled in the BIOS. Turning this feature on can be done by following this process. Reboot the Z2 Mini Access the BIOS menu during the boot-up process Select the Advanced settings menu Select the Built-in Devices menu Enable Intel HD Graphics Save the settings and complete the boot-up process Use Cases During the certification test process, Milestone engineers sought to fully test the capabilities of the HP Z2 Mini workstation as both a standalone workstation supporting the XProtect Smart Client, and as an NVR supporting video recording and the full XProtect VMS solution. A variety of image resolutions were used to fully test the recording and graphics processing capabilities of the workstation. The machine supports up to 6 displays, and tests were conducted using one, two, three and four monitor configurations. The Z2 Mini supports upto 1.5 TB of internal storage which can be used as a live database for video surveillance. During the workstation tests the only XProtect application that was running on the HP workstation was the XProtect Smart Client. The client application was logged into an XProtect Corporate VMS which was running on a Virtual Machine in the same local network. During the NVR tests all of the XProtect Expert 2017 R1 services and applications required for the VMS to operate were running together on the HP machine. All simulated video streams used in this test were configured at 30 frames per second (FPS). All video streams were configured to use the H.264 video codec. 6 1920x1080 (2.1 Megapixel / 1080p) 2048x1536 (3 Megapixel) 3072x2048 (6 Megapixel) 3840x2160 (8 megapixel) Workstation Scenario: There are four DisplayPort video display interfaces on the HP Z2 Mini workstation. The HP Z2 Mini configuration enables 4 displays connected to ports 1 through 3 using DisplayPort 1.2 multistream technology and 2 displays connected to the fourth port also using DisplayPort 1.2 multistream technology. Each of these ports was connected to a monitor with a maximum display resolution of 1920x1080. Tests were conducted to measure the performance of the workstation when it was making use of between one and four monitors. The monitor configuration used in this test is shown in the screenshot included in the above image. In the left most vertical monitor there is a 2x6 view. In the next horizontal monitor to the right we have a 1+3 view. On the third monitor from the left, aligned vertically, we have a 1+4 view, and on the far right horizontal monitor we have a 1+1 view. Both traditional horizontal and vertically configured monitors were used to make the best use of the lab environment. In an operational environment there would be no limitation on the physical configuration of the monitors. The Smart Client application was running in the default configuration, there were no alterations made to the client in terms of performance. By default the Smart Client will attempt to decode and display the full resolution of each live video stream that it is presenting, it will also attempt to display each live video stream in the full frame rate that it has received from the camera.

7 Workstation Performance Results The focus of these certification tests was to highlight the performance of the HP Z2 Mini workstation, and to measure the difference in performance levels which are available with and without using the hardware acceleration features enabled by Intel Quick Synch and the XProtect Smart Client software. At an acceptable CPU load (74%) we can display 4 more cameras and display nearly twice the total video bandwidth

The goal of the test was to increase the total amount of video which was displayed with each successive test. When 3 monitors was reached there was not enough computational capacity to add any more 3 megapixel video streams, we were able to add 8 additional video streams which were a mix of 720p, VGA and 4CIF resolutions. 3x4 3x4 1+1

During this scenario we were using 30 FPS video streams in all tests, however we measured the average FPS that the Smart Client application was able to decode and display reliably throughout the test. Using this method we can see that Intel Quick Synch GPU-based hardware acceleration increases by more than 200% the amount of pixels that the HP Z2 Mini workstation can display, while remaining under a healthy operational workload. NVR Scenario: The vast majority of video surveillance installations in the world contain less than 50 cameras. In these installations a standalone NVR is often preferred since it can support all of the required applications and services needed for the VMS with a very small hardware footprint. However, for

10 video surveillance installations of any size, performance and storage are always a concern. Combining Milestone XProtect and HP Z-Series workstations as a standalone NVR solution for a video surveillance installation is a fantastic option for customers, since the HP Z2 Mini and HP Z240 Workstationssupport the hardware acceleration features that Milestone uses to record more video than ever before. The Z2 Mini workstation has a maximum storage of 1.5 TB, so it couldn t be used as a long term storage solution, however it has plenty of storage to serve as a live database which would be connected to a larger archive storage solution. In addition, several of the other HP Z-Series workstations can be ordered with much larger storage capacity, with upto 40 TB of raw storage on the Z840. The HP Z2 Mini and HP Z240 Workstations support hardware acceleration features enabled by Intel Quick Synch and the XProtect software. In this scenario we used XProtect Expert as the VMS since it supports hardware accelerated video motion detection (VMD). XProtect Expert and Corporate 2017 R1 are the only two VMS versions that currently support hardware accelerated VMD. We installed all of the required services and applications for XProtect Expert on the Z2 Mini, and during the performance tests we both recorded video based on video motion detection, and we displayed video on the Smart Client. Both of these functions take advantage of the hardware acceleration.

11 NVR Performance Results Two tests were conducted with the Z2 workstation operating as a standalone NVR. The first test was done with video streams in 1080p resolution, and the second test was conducted with 8 Megapixel video streams. By default XProtect recording servers aren t enabled to process video motion detection utilizing the hardware acceleration resources. First, it is required to enabled hardware acceleration within the video motion detection settings of the camera group. The tests were designed to simulate realistic scenarios with cameras recording at unpredictable and varying times. This will cause the processing load on the GPU and the CPU to fluctuate as it would in a real installation. By adjusting the sensitivity of the VMD settings on each individual camera we were able to create a situation where the cameras recorded between 30 and 50% of the time. Based on previous testing with HP Z-Series workstations the addition of hardware acceleration for VMD increases the capability of the NVRs to record three to four times the amount of video. Past tests showed that we could record upto ten 720p video streams, or five 3 Megapixel streams, based on video motion detection. With hardware acceleration we were able to record p streams, and as many as twenty 8 Megapixel video streams. All tests are conducted with the H.264 codec, and with 30 frames per second. The performance data from these tests is listed below. Image Resolution Views Displayed Live Cameras Recorded Video Bandwidth 1920x Mbps 3072x Mbps Intel GPU % CPU% Frame Loss % The hardware acceleration feature was so efficient in these tests, that the reason we needed to stop at 20 eight megapixel streams was due to dropped frames of 1.4%. Hardware acceleration on VMD shifted the bottleneck of performance from the CPU to the disk system. The single HDD on this Z2 Mini workstation couldn t keep up with the amount of video data that was being delivered. This is a remarkable acheivement, and shows the potential of using these HP Z-Series workstations as a very high performance standalone NVR for video surveillance. Conclusion In most traditional video surveillance scenarios operators don t need to view 8, 6 or even 3 megapixel video. For the most part their monitor s won t support those resolutions, which is why most system design specifications call for image resolutions of High Definition (720p or 1080p). The HP Z2 Mini workstation was able to decode and display more than 10 full 1080p video streams at 30 frames per second in H.264. This is an impressive result for a workstation that is very

12 compact in form factor and fully supports all the features of the XProtect Smart Client. Then, add the fact that the HP Z2 Mini can easily record 32 high definition video streams using the same workstation as an NVR, and the impact of using these HP Z-Series machines with Milestone XProtect becomes incredibly compelling. Integrators and end users should seriously consider adding the HP Z2 Mini solution to their portfolio of technology solutions due to the flexibility it provides in designing both operator workstation environments and supporting small to medium sized video surveillance installations as a standalone NVR. The HP Z-series line of hardware supports upto 6 displays, can be configured with upto 40 TB of raw storage. The Z-2 Mini and Z240 models fully support hardware acceleration, and have more than enough performance to support an XProtect installation in most realistic scenarios.
