Content WindSim 9.0 Validation Work Ongoing Research Projects Way Forward WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Content WindSim 9.0 Validation Work Ongoing Research Projects Way Forward WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

WindSim 9.0 Release after the summer in August/September We are still open to implement urgent requests Main focus on speed and model performance Many new features WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

New features in WindSim 9.0 FINISHED Excel tools for FMV, C2 value determination, IEC plots Faster energy module calculation Rotor equivalent wind speed Reduced files in binary format WindSim Express improvements Chinese MCP Chinese path names Chinese manuals Correct map conversion bug Correct queuing bug Integration towards Windplanner => Presentation from Ronald de Vries, The Imagineers - Windplanner WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

New features in WindSim 9.0 WORK IN PROGRESS Export to the new CFD input format of WindPRO (Matteo) Export to Google Earth (Tejo) TI map for 15m/s bin in wind resource module (Matteo) Speed-up wind resource module (Matteo) Site compliance files (Catherine) More cells (Catherine) Faster actuator disc (Nikos/Catherine) Spot value plots with logarithmic scale Select spot value height and have several spot values Write out layers with height above ground into the vtf file WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Excel Tools Flow Model Verifier Stand-alone tool to compare vertical profiles of several simulations with measurements Automatic C2 value determination Global data base to find Leaf Area Index in your region and calculation of a suitable C2 value depending on forest height and forest type IEC plots Compare simulated turbulence intensity to the IEC class values WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Faster energy calculation The energy module has grown and gotten more and more features over the years Time to take a closer look and speed-up the calculations where possible Much better performance could be achieved by not re-reading but storing file information in memory and by not writing some information Energy calculation including IEC classification and WAT export now available within 2-3 hours for very large projects WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Rotor equivalent wind speed The wind speed at the turbine position is not only calculated at hub height but also at 2,4,5,7 additional heights The speeds are weighted, depending on the surface fraction that belongs to each height WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Reduced files in binary format In WindSim 8.0 we introduced the option to write the large result files (.phi) as binary In WindSim 9.0 we introduce the option to write the reduced result files (red.phi) as binary Binary format will be the default from WindSim 9.0 on WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

WindSim Express GLC30 land use data set included (30 m resolution) 10 different land use types Editable roughness table Usage of map files easier as you do not need to give a coordinate system Write out ows file in the beginning WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Export to the new CFD input format of WindPRO WindPRO has defined a flowres format which will make it possible to give directly the wind speed and turbulence results from WindSim into WindPRO That format is based on xml files Straight forward implementation but we need to have some iterations with WindPRO to test the format WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Export to Google Earth Graphical Interface to enter the coordinate system Automatic export of wind resource pictures to Google Earth WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

TI map for 15 m/s bin in wind resource module WindSim 8.0 contained the feature to have the overall shear and inflow angle weighted by direction in.txt file in the wind resource module in addition to weighted wind speed and TI WindSim 9.0 will also contain the TI values for the 15 m/s bin in that file WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Speed-up wind resource module During the speed up of the energy module we found work processes which are also done in the wind resource module and we will try to improve the speed in the same manner WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Site compliance files Information from different WindSim modules is needed to check if the IEC criteria are fulfilled On the long-term we would like to have a module presenting all those results On the short term we just want to make that information easily available in one or more excel sheets => Please give your input during the Site Suitability Workshop WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

More cells WindSim was originally based on static arrays, now dynamic arrays are gradually used more and more. Furthermore, all the modules of WindSim were bundled into one executable. Before the we had 1000x1000x61 cells => 61 million cells as the maximum Some people would have liked to be able to have more cells in x and/or y direction For the wind atlas method developed in the last years we have split the code into segments: terrain, wind field, wind resources Therefore we are now able to run much larger models: 5500x5500x61 cells possible in the terrain module Restriction is now more on the wind field site as here the PC s do not have enough RAM and the computational time would increase substantially WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Faster actuator disc New way to introduce the forces Energy calculation possible and validated now => Workshop presentation from Nikolaos Simisiroglou WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Content WindSim 9.0 Validation Work Ongoing Research Projects Way Forward WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Validation work Forest Turbulence intensity Forest forest model Forest input parameters Actuator Disc WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Validation work: Turbulence intensity above forest Often we heard that the TI is overestimated above the forest therefore we have done a thorough validation on several customer sites with good turbulence measurements (class I anemometers) We do not see a general overprediction of the turbulence in hub height but right above and inside the forest Turbulence cross prediction errors at 80 m height are around 5-10% Conclusion: If the measurement mast heights are well above the forest and the forest model is used correctly the turbulence prediction is good We would like to improve the TI prediction right above and inside the forest WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Validation work: forest model To improve the TI predriction inside and right above the forest we have tried several forest models and approaches => Presentation from Geoffrey DeSena WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Validation work: forest model constants The leaf area index (LAI), the drag coefficient and the forest height are very important parameters to obtain good simulation results We have taken the above mentioned excel tools to get the LAI and we will run several sites with it to see the performance with such default settings Peter Enevoldsen from Siemens will do the same for many sites Results will be published at WindEurope in November So far they look very promising WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Validation work: Actuator disc We implemented a better actuator disc solution Validation work has been done comparing the wind speed, the turbulence and the power production from measurements and simulations => Workshop presentation from Nikolaos Simisiroglou WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Content WindSim 9.0 Validation Work Ongoing Research Projects Way Forward WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Ongoing Research projects NowWind: Nowcasting for wind energy production - an integrated modelling approach Phd on Actuator Disc - Nikolaos Simisiroglou - ending in July Phd on Mesoscale Coupling Pablo Duran - just started Investigate mesoscale coupling together with the Novia University of Applied Sciences, Finland just started WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

NowWind Problem: Mesoscale models do not assimilate wind measurements close to the ground because they describe to small scale effects => wind forecasts do not forecast ramp up effects correctly and the wind speed and wind direction is not correct close to the ground Solution: Upscaling of 10m wind measurements with CFD to 100 m that they can be used in the mesoscale models WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

NowWind Available weather stations and wind farms WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

NowWind: Closest met mast to Hitra wind farm WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

NowWind: Third Closest met mast to Hitra wind farm WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Phd on Mesoscale Coupling Within 2 years there will be reanalysis data sets available from Copernicus Climate Change Services for whole Europe Resolution less than 10 km, probably around 2.5 km For free More realistic boundary conditions for WindSim simulations than analytical profiles can be downloaded easily We are now investigating the best coupling methods for direct coupling and statistical-dynamical downscaling of this data set We are validating the techniques and are open to receive test data sets from customers e.g. Novia University and EON WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Phd on Mesoscale Coupling During that Phd we will also do transient simulations for the meso-micro scale coupling The focus will be on the correct description of the TKE and EP at the inlet boundaries of the CFD domain The idea is also to simulate the turbulence behaviour around the turbines more correctly to us this also in our power forecasting WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Content WindSim 9.0 Validation Work Ongoing Research Projects Way Forward WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June

Way forward New 3D component Replace Inova Cloud computing Site suitability module Mesoscale Coupling / inlet boundary profiles Test different numerical schemes to enhance recirculation Run more sensitivity studies to optimize the solver settings for very complex sites Automatic atmospheric stability classification from measurements WindSim 12th User Meeting, Tønsberg June
