4 4(15) 2 Introduction The VCM is a connectivity ECU that is factory fitted in cars from Volvo Car Corporation (VCC). It handles the diagnostic routing between the vehicle and the external test equipment for diagnostic connections via CAN*, Ethernet/WLAN and Remotely via available Internet connections. The VCM can also be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot for people inside the vehicle as well as a W-Fi client to connect to available hotspots (for instance, a hotspot provided from a passenger s laptop or cell phone), and it provides raw GNSS position for use by other ECUs in the vehicle, such as the Navigation system. The VCM is capable of routing data to/from available Internet sources in the vehicle, for instance the Wi-Fi station in the VCM, a Bluetooth handy connected to another ECU in the vehicle, or a vehicle modem, also located in another ECU in the vehicle. * Legislated OBD diagnostics (11-bit CAN) are not routed via the VCM.

This 4-pin coaxial connector is used for USB communication with the telematics unit in the car. Type: JAE MX49 Code: B Colour: Black Figure 2 - USB Connector DLC Ethernet connector The green connector is for DLC Ethernet. This 5-pin connector is used for Ethernet communication with external diagnostic equipment. Type: IL-AG5-5P-S3L2. Colour: Green

7 7(15) WLAN antenna The pastel orange Fakra connector is used to connect an external WLAN antenna. The VCM supports b/g/n at 2.4GHz and 5Ghz. Type: FAKRA-2 Single plug Code: M Colour: Pastel orange Gender: Male Impedance: 50 ohm GNSS antenna connector The blue Fakra is the input for the GNSS antenna. Type: FAKRA-2 Single plug Code: C Colour: Blue Gender: Male Impedance: 50 ohm 3.2 Power supply Main power The VCM is powered by the external vehicle battery (nominal 12.5V (engine off V), 13.5V (engine on)) for all use cases. Operating range: 8-16 VDC. Maximum current consumption 8V.

8(15) 4 Operating Instructions 4.1 Wi-Fi Hotspot The VCM can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot for passengers in the car. 4.1.1 Enable and disable Wi-Fi hotspot 1.

The number of devices connected is shown in the Car Wi-Fi hotspot menu (as shown above) Technology and security for the Wi-Fi hotspot The 2.4GHz or 5 GHz frequencies are used for allocating the Wi-Fi hotspot, depending on user selection. If multiple devices are operating on the frequency at the same time then it can result in impaired performance. Frequency / 5 GHz Standards a/b/g/n. Security type - WPA2-AES-CCMP. The Wi-Fi antenna is fitted on the car's roof. 4.2 Wi-Fi Client The VCM can act as a Wi-Fi client, to allow the driver or passengers to connect to available hotspots Enable Wi-Fi client 1. In the Wi-Fi menu, the available hotspots are presented in a list ordered by security type (WPA2-PSK(AES-CCMP) are presented first, and other networks second), and signal strength. To connect to an available hotspot, press the name of the hotspot in the list, and then enter the security credentials (password) in the resulting pop-up menu. 4.3 GNSS output The VCM automatically outputs GNSS raw position data. No additional user interaction is required. The GNSS data is used by other ECUs in the vehicle, for instance the Navigation system. See example below:

13(15) Figure 13 - Navigation user interface 4.4 Diagnostic connections 4.4.1 DoIP connection The DoIP interface in the vehicle is located in the OBD connector.

When a test equipment is connected on the OBD Ethernet port, the VCM presents itself on the network using a Vehicle Announcement Message, as specified in ISO Based on the content of this message, an external tester tool can connect to the VCM and create a diagnostic session CAN connection The diagnostics over CAN interface is also located in the OBD connector. To communicate with the VCM and the ECUs behind the VCM in the vehicle topology, the diagnostic requests shall be sent with 29-bit addressing. The same CAN interface is used for legislated ODB diagnostics. For such purposes, 11-bit addressing is used. Such CAN traffic does not affect the VCM.

14 14(15) 5 Maintenance The status of the VCM can be read via diagnostic connections using special workshop tools. In addition, other ECUs monitor the communication from the VCM and in case of missing/invalid communication, the Central Electronic Module in the vehicle is alerted, and will display a warning to the driver. Maintenance and replacement of the VCM can only be performed by Volvo certified workshops.

15 15(15) 6 Installation The VCM is factory fitted in Volvo vehicles. It is not possible to buy this product separately.
