Mobile Edge Computing Overview Mobile Cloud Computing MME HSS Mobile Core Network S-GW P-GW Internet Cloud (Data Center) End Device Small Cell Mobile Access Network Small Cell enodeb End Device Mobile Cloud Computing The computational processing resources are located in a remote location, e.g., Data Center, and accessed via the Internet. Benefit Less capital required by accessing to massive computing and storage resources. Limitation Data transfer bottlenecks subject to access network issues and delay. e.g., it is tough to satisfy the 5G latency requirement. End Device 5
Mobile Edge Computing Overview Mobile Edge Computing MME HSS Mobile Core Network S-GW P-GW Internet Cloud (Data Center) End Device Small Cell server End Device Mobile Access Network Small Cell enodeb server server End Device Controller Computing Storage server Mobile Edge Computing Moving cloud infrastructure closer to end users. Benefits On-Premises: The edge is local meaning that it can run isolated from the rest of the network. Network efficiency: Reduce the backhaul usage. Proximity: Edge computing may also have direct connect to the devices. Lower latency: React faster as edge services run close to end devices. Location awareness: Local service can leverage low-level signaling information. 6
Mobile Edge Computing Overview Feasibility of Mobile Edge Computing Cost of storage As the cost of storage drops, the cost of integration of additional storage also drops. Very little storage Modern APs/Femtos possess very little storage, e.g., MB Flash is typical. 7

Mobile Edge Computing Architecture ETSI Mobile Edge Computing ETSI is working on the integration of telecom standards with cloud and Internet technologies. initiative intends to unite Telco and IT-cloud, providing IT and cloud computing capabilities for RAN. 11
Mobile Edge Computing Architecture ETSI Mobile Edge Computing The server is deployed at the LTE macro base station (enodeb) site. The server is deployed at a multi-technology (3G/LTE) cell aggregation site which can be located indoor within an enterprise or indoor/outdoor for a special public coverage scenario, e.g., stadium, shopping mall, to control a number of local multitechnology access points. The server is deployed at the 3G radio network controller (RNC) site. 12

Mobile Edge Computing Application 16
Mobile Edge Computing Application Active Device Location Tracking Network measurement based tracking of active GPS independent and network determined terminal equipment. Third-party geo-location algorithms within a geo-location application hosted on the server. Efficient and scalable solution with local measurement processing and event based triggers. It enables location based services for enterprises and consumers, for example in venues, retail locations and traditional coverage areas where GPS coverage is not available. Services may include mobile advertising, Smart City, footfall analysis, campus management, etc. 17
Mobile Edge Computing Application Augmented Reality Content Delivery Augmented Reality Application An Augmented Reality (AR) application on a smart-phone or tablet overlays augmented reality content onto objects viewed on the device camera. Applications on the server can provide local object tracking and local AR content caching. The solution minimizes round trip time and maximizes throughput for optimum quality of experience. It can be used to offer consumer or enterprise propositions, such as tourist information, sporting event information, advertisements etc. 18
Mobile Edge Computing Application Video Analytics Video Analytics The video management application transcodes and stores captured video streams from cameras received on the LTE uplink. The video analytics application processes the video data to detect and notify specific configurable events e.g. object movement, lost child, abandoned luggage, etc. The application sends low bandwidth video metadata to the central operations and management server for database searches. 19
Mobile Edge Computing Application Distributed Content and DNS Caching Distributed Content and DNS Caching Popular content/data stored at the Base Station Backhaul and Transport savings (up to 35%) Improved QoE (20% improvement for loading a Web page) 20
Mobile Edge Computing Challenges 21
Mobile Edge Computing Challenges Network integration server to be transparent to 3GPP network architecture/interfaces Application portability Applications to be seamlessly loaded and executed in the platform. Transfer of applications between multi-vendor servers Security Fulfil 3GPP security requirements, provide secure sandbox and isolation for applications. Protection from malicious applications/software and from physical attacks on the server Performance server shall not impair network performance or end user experience Resilience Introduction of server shall not impact network availability. Applications need to be robust and resilient Operations New management layers for hosting infrastructure, application platform, and hosted software applications and services Regulatory/legal considerations User data protection/privacy, net neutrality, LI, charging 22
Conclusion is one of key technologies enabling low latency service. ETSI leads the standard. Many telco. and IT cloud industries are working on realizing. There are many challenges to realize. 23
