This, as you might have guessed, is can be hard to achieve and having it often requires adding significantly to the weight, size, and price of a product. Extended battery life can also mean stripping down features and severely limiting the processor. t becomes a balancing act that often leaves certain buyers unhappy with the choices made so as to appeal to a wider audience. Things are getting better, but there is a lot of room for improvement, especially if you are the type of user that values battery life above all else. Luckily companies are starting to do something about it. Many business-focused ultraportables offer 9-cell batteries, which, combined with a low-voltage processor should get you near the 8 hour mark. Some companies also offer slice batteries, which add to the weight, size, and price of a product significantly, but will get your ultraportable up to that all (work) day point or well past it. C Origin The PowerPads are just what much of the mobile workforce has been looking for a slim and universal power solution that can really hold a charge. They are not tailored to specific devices, but using a PowerPad you should be able to add between seven and ten hours of life to your portable device, depending on your hardware and usage. The two models, the PowerPad 95 and 130 sell for $199 and $299 respectively. Receive Site U RSS RSS 2.0 A glance at a PowerPad will just how simple of a device it is. t is a notebook-sized ( inches) plastic case that is slim enough to fit in any backpack or bag (0.6- inches thick). t weighs either 1.85 or 2.07 lbs and has a capacity of 95Wh or 130Wh depending on which you go with. The plastic slices are almost devoid of features, the only ones being a power input, button to turn on/off discharge mode, the LCD, and two USB slots. The LCD display the battery s health and has a fuel gauge to display its current charge. The USB slots can be used to power/charge any devices you might have lying around.

The voltages listed are actually 15-20V so almost any notebook should work, you just need to make sure you have the right tips to make the connections.

3 Page 3 of 5 The PowerPads will power most notebooks, but are not totally universal. They are designed to automatically adjust for voltage and a quick search through the thousands of products on their compatibility list will let you see if you notebook is listed or not. The voltages listed are actually 15-20V so almost any notebook should work, you just need to make sure you have the right tips to make the connections. The PowerPad smartly uses your notebook s power adapter to charge, which means you have to buy two tips, but then if you are doing any traveling you will only need to have one power adapter, which is a great way to save weight. tested the PowerPad with a number of devices, starting with a ThinkPad X200 notebook. Like most ThinkPads it runs a 20V adapter and while the X200 was not on the list, the X61 was, so figured everything would be fine. After charging the PowerPad up to 100% using the ThinkPad s adapter and the right tip everything was set to go. After this point you just plug it into your notebook when you need some juice and then hold down the power button for a second or two. The PowerPad will start charging your notebook, just as if it was plugged into a wall outlet (as opposed to an internal battery). The indicator on the PowerPad will tell you how much charge is left as well as what voltage it is discharging at (20V in the case of the ThinkPad). You can also plug in USB devices, so was charging my ipod in addition to the notebook. The amount of power and additional running time you get is going to depend heavily on the device(s) you are charging and what model of PowerPad you pick. Electrovaya says to expect 7

4 Page 4 of 5 hours from one model and 10 from the other, but these times are going to vary based on your notebook and what you are doing with it. f you want to know approximately how much battery life the PowerPad will yield for your notebook, you can do a little bit of math. Pull out the battery on your notebook and find the voltage and mah numbers. Multiple these two and you will get the number of Wh that your stock battery has. For example the Fujitsu P8010 s battery runs at 7.2V and 8700mAh so it is about 62Wh. This battery will get you about 6 hours of life so if you take the PowerPad 95 along for the day you should be able to get you a total of 15.2 hours. This is a rough estimate that does not factor in certain inefficiencies or varying running conditions on the notebook, but it should be accurate enough to help you with your purchase decision. What this all boils down to is a battery pack that really packs a punch. The light weight of the PowerPad means a relatively high energy density and the plastic construction seems more than sturdy enough, so long as you are not dropping the product too often. The LED indictor is a great little feature that gets the job done as well. From a universality standpoint it really excels as well, it will power a full range of notebooks and USB devices, the best combination being your notebook and phone at the same time. Of course, it s not cheap, and it s just another thing to carry around with you, but as far as methods to double or even trip your device s battery life go, its one of the best options on the market.
