CHAPTER This chapter describes the PA-MC-E/ and PA-MC-8E/ port adapters and contains the following sections: Port Adapter, page - Features, page -4 Compliance and Electrical Interface Specifications for E/PRI, page - LEDs, page - Cables, Connectors, and Pinouts, page -6 Port Adapter Slot Locations on the Supported Platforms, page -7 Identifying Interface Addresses, page -6 Port Adapter The multichannel E/PRI port adapters (PA-MC-E/ and PA-MC-8E/) integrate data service unit (DSU) functionality and E channel support into the Cisco router. The PA-MC-E/ and PA-MC-8E/ provide two or eight independent E (-ohm) connections via RJ-48C connectors. (See Figure - and Figure -.) The PA-MC-8E/ can provide up to 8 separate full-duplex High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) channelized E, fractional E, full E, or unframed E interfaces and the PA-MC-E/ can provide up to 6 separate full-duplex HDLC channelized E, fractional E, full E, or unframed E interfaces. The Catalyst RSM/VIP and the Catalyst 6 family FlexWAN module support the PA-MC-8E/ multichannel E/PRI port adapter only. The Cisco 7 router supports the PA-MC-E/ multichannel E/PRI port adapter only. The Cisco 74ASR router supports the PA-MC-8E/ multichannel E/PRI port adapter only. -

Port Adapter Chapter Figure - PA-MC-E/ Port Adapter Front-Panel View MULTI-CHANNEL E/PRI 46 Figure - PA-MC_8E/ Port Adapter Front-Panel View 7 4 MULTICHANNEL E/PRI Each port adapter has a handle attached, but this handle is not shown in this publication to allow a full view of the detail on the port adapter face plate. When you are running channelized E, each E interface can provide up to E channel groups, which are numbered from to. Each channel group provides up to 64-kbps timeslots (E channels), which are numbered to. Multiple timeslots can be mapped to a single channel group. Each channel group is presented to the system as a serial interface that can be configured individually. Usable bandwidth for each channel group is calculated as n x6kbps or n x 64 kbps, where n is a number of E channels ( to ). The Catalyst 6 family FlexWAN module does not support ISDN. When you are running ISDN PRI, each E interface provides bearer (B) channels that can transmit and receive data at the rate of 64 kbps, full-duplex, and one data (D) channel that can transmit and receive data at the rate of 64 kbps, full-duplex. The B channels are used for transmitting user data. The D channel is used for call setup control and network connection teardown, and provides the communication from the router to the ISDN switch. The B and D channels are presented to the system as serial interfaces that support HDLC and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) encapsulation. The multichannel E/PRI port adapter supports dial-on-demand routing (DDR) when you are running ISDN PRI. Each of the E channels on the multichannel E/PRI port adapter uses a portion of the E bandwidth (fractional E) or the entire E bandwidth for data transmission. Usable bandwidth for each E is n x 64 or n x 6 kbps, where n is a number from to. The unused portion of the E bandwidth, when you are not running at full E speeds, cannot be used and is filled with idle channel data. E timeslots on the PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ are numbered to, rather than following the more traditional zero-based scheme ( to ) used with other Cisco products. This is to ensure consistency with telco numbering schemes for E channels within channelized equipment. The PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ support network and payload loopbacks. Bit error rate (BER) testing is supported on each of the E links. The bit error rate (BER) tester can be run only on one port at a time. -

Chapter Port Adapter The PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ supports the aggregation of multiple Es (called inverse multiplexing or bonding) for higher bandwidth data rates. The PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ also supports Cisco HDLC, Frame Relay, PPP, and SMDS Data Exchange Interface (DXI) encapsulations over each E link. For SMDS only, DXI is sent on the E line, so it needs to connect to an SMDS switch that has direct DXI input. Table - shows the ISDN PRI port restrictions found in the routers. 4 Features Chapter Example : Valid configuration. PA-MC-8E configured with: PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = channels) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = channels) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = 6 channels) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = channels) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = channels) Total number of channels: This example is valid because channels is fewer than the 8 channels maximum allowable per port adapter. In this case the PRI ports can be used for the PA-MC-8E. (Another 8 channels could be configured for a maximum of 8 [ + 8 = 8] ports.) Example : Non-valid configuration. PA-MC-8E configured with: PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = interfaces) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = interfaces) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = interfaces) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = interfaces) PRI group of timeslots ( B channels + D channel = interfaces) Total number of interfaces: This example is not valid because channels exceeds the 8 channels allowable. Features The PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ has the following features: Single-width port adapter in Catalyst RSM/VIP in Catalyst family switches, Catalyst 6 family FlexWAN module in Catalyst 6 family switches Cisco 7 series routers, Cisco 7 series routers, Cisco 7 VXR routers, Cisco ubr7 series routers, Cisco 7 router, Cisco 7 router, Cisco 74ASR router, and for the VIP in all Cisco 7 series routers and Cisco 7 series routers. Transmits and receives data bidirectionally at the rate of.48 Mbps for each E port. Supports RFC 46. For information on accessing Cisco MIB files, refer to the Cisco MIB User Quick Reference. For RFC 46, Cisco supports all tables except the Frac table. Functions as a concentrator (for WANs) for a remote site. Conforms with ITU G.7 and G.74. Supports user-configurable international and national bits, set to a predetermined pattern. -4

Chapter Compliance and Electrical Interface Specifications for E/PRI Compliance and Electrical Interface Specifications for E/PRI The E/PRI line interface unit (LIU) meets the following specifications for input jitter tolerance, pulse shape/amplitude (E), line termination, and jitter transfer: CCIT G.7 CCIT G.74 CCIT G.8 The PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ ports receive and transmit at the E level while driving and receiving from a -ohm unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable. This port adapter connects directly to any equipment that has E level input/output. The E/PRI front end meets the following specifications: Line rate:.48 Mbps (± ppm) Line code: AMI or HDB (bipolar with eight-zero substitution) on the external ports Impedance: ohms Pulse shape: ANSI E., with pulse amplitude between.4 and.6v peak. Table - provide the E channel data rates for the multichannel E/PRI port adapter. Table - E Channel Data Rates E/PRI Channel Number Data Rate to n x 6 kbps up to full E (.48 Mbps) or n x 64 kbps up to full E (.48 Mbps) or Unframed mode at full E (.48 Mbps). Or any mixture of n x 6 and n x 64, where n + n < LEDs The multichannel E/PRI port adapter contains the LED, standard on all port adapters, and one status LED for each port. After system initialization, the LED goes on, indicating that the multichannel E/PRI port adapter has been enabled for operation. (See Figure - and Figure -4.) The console screen also displays a message as the system discovers each interface during its reinitialization. The following conditions must be met before the multichannel E/PRI port adapter is enabled: The multichannel E/PRI port adapter is correctly connected to the backplane and receiving power. The system bus recognizes the multichannel E/PRI port adapter. A valid version of multichannel E/PRI port adapter microcode is loaded and running. If any of these conditions is not met, or if the initialization fails for other reasons, the LED does not go on. -

Chapter Port Adapter Slot Locations on the Supported Platforms Cisco 7 Series Routers and Cisco 7 Series Routers VIP Slot Numbering The PA-MC-E and PA-MC-8E are supported on the VIPs (versatile interface processors) used in Cisco 7 series and Cisco 7 series routers. In the Cisco 7 router and Cisco 7 router, the VIP motherboard is installed horizontally in the VIP slot. In the Cisco 77 router and Cisco 7 router, the VIP motherboard is installed vertically in the VIP slot. The PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ can be installed in either bay (port adapter slot or ) on the VIP. The bays are numbered from left to right on the VIP. Figure -7 shows the slot numbering on a VIP. Figure -7 VIP Slot Locations Port adapter slot Port adapter slot Port adapter handles not shown 98 Cisco 7 routers have three slots for port adapters, and two slots for Route Switch Processors (RSPs). The slots are numbered from bottom to top. You can place the PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ in any of the VIP interface slots (slot through ). Slots and 4 are always reserved for RSPs. The Cisco 7 router is not shown. Cisco 7 routers have four slots for port adapters, and one slot for an RSP. The slots are numbered from bottom to top. 16 Identifying Interface Addresses Chapter Cisco 77 routers have five slots for port adapters, and two slots for RSPs. The slots are numbered from left to right. You can place the PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ in any of the VIP interface slots (slot,, 4,, or 6). Slots and are always reserved for RSPs. The Cisco 77 router is not shown. Cisco 7 routers have eleven slots for port adapters, and two slots for RSPs. The slots are numbered from left to right. You can place the PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ in any of the VIP interface slots (slots through, or slots 9 through ). Slots 6 and 7 are always reserved for RSPs. The Cisco 7 router is not shown. Identifying Interface Addresses This section describes how to identify interface addresses for the PA-MC-E/ or PA-MC-8E/ in the supported platforms. Interface addresses specify the actual physical location of each interface on a router or switch. Interfaces on a PA-MC-E/ and PA-MC-8E/ installed in a router maintain the same address regardless of whether other port adapters are installed or removed. However, when you move a port adapter to a different slot, the first number in the interface address changes to reflect the new port adapter slot number. Interfaces on a PA-MC-E/ and PA-MC-8E/ installed in a VIP or FlexWAN module maintain the same address regardless of whether other interface processors or modules are installed or removed. However, when you move a VIP or FlexWAN module to a different slot, the interface processor or module slot number changes to reflect the new interface processor or module slot. Interface ports are numbered from left to right starting with. E timeslots on the multichannel E/PRI port adapter are numbered to, rather than following the more traditional zero-based scheme ( to ) used with other Cisco products. This is to ensure consistency with telco numbering schemes for E channels within channelized E equipment. This section includes the following subsections: Catalyst RSM/VIP Interface Addresses, page -8 Catalyst 6 Family FlexWAN Module Interface Addresses, page -9 Cisco 7 Series Routers Interface Addresses, page -9 Cisco 7 Series and Cisco ubr7 Series Routers Interface Addresses, page -9 Cisco 7 Router Interface Address, page - Cisco 7 Router Interface Address, page - Cisco 74 PCI Port Adapter Carrier Card Interface Addresses, page - Cisco 74ASR Router Interface Addresses, page - Cisco 7 Series Routers and Cisco 7 Series Routers VIP Interface Addresses, page - -6

Port adapter slot is reserved for the Fast Ethernet port on the I/O controller (if present). Catalyst RSM/VIP Interface Addresses In Catalyst family switches, the Catalyst RSM/VIP can be installed in any slot except the top slots, which contain the supervisor engine modules. The Catalyst RSM/VIP in a Catalyst family switch does not use interface processor slot numbering; therefore, the slots in which it is installed are not numbered. A port adapter can be installed into either port adapter slot or slot on a Catalyst RSM/VIP. See Figure -6. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format port-adapter-slot number/interface-port number:channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed in slot, channel, on a Catalyst RSM/VIP, the interface addresses would be /:, /:, /:, /:, /4:, /:, /6:, and /7: (port adapter slot interface ports through 7, and channel group ). The Catalyst RSM/VIP supports the PA-MC-8E/ only. -8

Chapter Identifying Interface Addresses Catalyst 6 Family FlexWAN Module Interface Addresses The Catalyst 6 family FlexWAN module can be installed in module slots through (depending on the number of slots in the router). Slot is reserved for the supervisor engine. A port adapter can be installed into either port adapter bay or bay on a FlexWAN module. See Figure -7. The interface address is composed of a four-part number in the format module-number/ port-adapter-bay-number/interface-port-number:channel-group-number. See Table -. The first number identifies the module slot of the chassis in which the FlexWAN module is installed (slot through slot, 6, 9, or depending on the number of slots in the chassis). These module slots are generally numbered from top to bottom, starting with. The second number identifies the bay of the FlexWAN module in which the port adapter is installed ( or ). The bays are numbered from left to right on the FlexWAN module. The third number identifies the physical port number on the port adapter. The PA-MC-8E/ is an eight-port port adapter, therefore the port can be through 7. The fourth number identifies the logical channel group and is a number from through. For example, if an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed in the FlexWAN module in module slot, port adapter bay, channel, the interface addresses would be //: through //7: (module slot, port adapter bay, interface ports through 7, and channel group ). The FlexWAN module supports the PA-MC-8E/ only. The FlexWAN module physical port address begins with slot, which differs from the conventional Catalyst 6 family port address, which begins with slot. Cisco 7 Series Routers Interface Addresses In Cisco 7 series router, port adapters are installed in port adapter slot. See Figure -8. In the Cisco 74 series router, port adapters are installed in port adapter slot 4. See Figure -9. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format port-adapter-slot-number/interface-port-number:channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if a dual-port PA-MC-E/ is installed on channel of a Cisco 7 router, the interface addresses would be /: and /:. If a dual-port PA-MC-E is installed on a Cisco 74 router, the interface addresses would be 4/: and 4/:. Cisco 7 Series and Cisco ubr7 Series Routers Interface Addresses In Cisco 7 series routers and Cisco 7 VXR routers, port adapter slots are numbered from the lower left to the upper right, beginning with slot and continuing through slot for the Cisco 7, slot 4 for the Cisco 74 and Cisco 74VXR, and slot 6 for the Cisco 76 and Cisco 76VXR. Port adapters can be installed in any available port adapter slot from through 6 (depending on the number of slots in the router). (Slot is reserved for the I/O controller.) See Figure -. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format port-adapter-slot-number/interface-port-number: channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if a dual-port PA-MC-E/ is installed in slot, channel, on a Cisco 7 series router, the -9

Identifying Interface Addresses Chapter interface addresses would be /: and /:. If an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed in slot, channel, on a Cisco 7 series router, the interface address would be /:, /:, /:, /:, /4:, /:, /6:, and /7: (port adapter slot interface ports through 7, and channel group ). Cisco ubr7 Series Routers Interface Addresses In the Cisco ubr7 router, only one slot accepts port adapters and it is numbered slot. In the Cisco ubr746 router and Cisco ubr746vxr router, port adapters can be installed in two port adapter slots (slot and slot ). Slot is always reserved for the I/O controller if present. See Figure -. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format port-adapter-slot-number/interface-port-number: channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if a dual-port PA-MC-E/ is installed in channel of a Cisco ubr7 router, the interface addresses would be /: and /: (port adapter slot interface ports and, and channel group ). If an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed slot, channel, of a Cisco ubr746 router, the interface addresses would be /:, /:, /:, /:, /4:, /:, /6:, and /7: (port adapter slot interface ports through 7, and channel group ). Cisco 7 Router Interface Address In the Cisco 7 router, only one slot accepts port adapters and it is numbered as slot. See Figure -. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format port-adapter-slot-number/interface-port-number:channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if a dual-port PA-MC-E/ is installed on channel of a Cisco 7 router, the interface addresses would be /: and /: (port adapter slot interface ports and, and channel group ). The Cisco 7 router supports the PA-MC-E/ only. If an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed on channel of a Cisco 7 router, the interface addresses would be /:, /:, /:, /:, /4:, /:, /6:, and /7: (port adapter slot interface ports through 7, and channel group ). -

Chapter Identifying Interface Addresses Cisco 74 PCI Port Adapter Carrier Card Interface Addresses In the Cisco 74 router, port adapters are installed in a Cisco 74 PCI port adapter carrier card, which installs in Cisco 74 router module slots through. The port adapter slot number is the same as the module slot number. See Figure -4 and Figure -. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format module-slot-number/interface-port-number:channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if a dual-port PA-MC-E/ is installed in the Cisco 74 PCI port adapter carrier card in Cisco 74 router module slot, channel, the interface addresses would be /: and /: (port adapter slot interface ports and, and channel group ). If an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed in the Cisco 74 PCI port adapter carrier card in Cisco 74 router module slot, the interface addresses would be /:, /:, /:, /:, /4:, /:, /6:, and /7: (port adapter slot interface ports through 7, and channel group ). Cisco 74ASR Router Interface Addresses In the Cisco 74ASR router, only one slot accepts port adapters and it is numbered as slot. See Figure -6. The interface address is composed of a three-part number in the format port-adapter-slot-number/interface-port-number:channel-group-number. See Table -. For example, if an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed on channel of a Cisco 74ASR router, the interface addresses would be /:, /:, /:, /:, /4:, /:, /6:, and /7: (port adapter slot interface ports through 7, and channel group ). The Cisco 74ASR router supports the PA-MC-8E/ only. Cisco 7 Series Routers and Cisco 7 Series Routers VIP Interface Addresses In Cisco 7 series routers and Cisco 7 series routers, port adapters are installed on a versatile interface processor (VIP), which installs in interface processor slots through (depending on the number of slots in the router). The port adapter can be installed in either bay (port adapter slot or ) on the VIP. See Figure -7, and Figure -8. The interface address for the VIP is composed of a four-part number in the format interface-processor-slot-number/port-adapter-slot-number/interface-portnumber:channel-group-number. See Table -. The first number identifies the slot in which the VIP is installed (slot through, depending on the number of slots in the router). The second number identifies the bay (port adapter slot) on the VIP in which the port adapter is installed ( or ). The bays are numbered from left to right on the VIP. The third number identifies the physical port number (interface port number) on the port adapter. The port numbers always begin at and are numbered from left to right. The number of additional ports depends on the number of ports on the port adapter. The PA-MC-E/ is a dual-port port adapter, therefore the port can be or. The PA-MC-8E/ are eight-port port adapters, therefore their port can be through 7. -

Identifying Interface Addresses Chapter The fourth number identifies the logical channel group and is a number from through. For example, if a dual-port PA-MC-T is installed in a VIP in interface processor slot, port adapter slot, channel, the interface addresses would be //: and //: (interface processor slot, port adapter slot, interface ports and, and channel group ). If an eight-port PA-MC-8E/ is installed in a VIP in interface processor slot, port adapter slot, channel, the interface addresses would be //:, //:, //:, //:, //4:, //:, //6:, and //7: (interface processor slot, port adapter slot, interface ports through 7, and channel group ). Although the processor slots in the seven-slot Cisco 7 and Cisco 77 routers and the thirteen-slot Cisco 7 router are vertically oriented and those in the five-slot Cisco 7 and Cisco 7 routers are horizontally oriented, all Cisco 7 series and Cisco 7 series routers use the same method for slot and port numbering. -
