1 CHAPTER 1 SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter Product Overview This chapter describes the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter and contains the following sections: SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter Product Description, page 1-1 Features, page 1-1 Limitations, page 1-2 LEDs, page 1-2 Cables, Connectors, and Pinouts, page 1-3 Port Adapter Slot Locations on the Cisco 7507 and Cisco 7513 Routers, page 1-5 Identifying Interface Addresses, page 1-7 SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter Product Description The SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter for the Cisco IP Transfer Point (ITP) is a single-width, eight-port T1/E1 port adapter that supports high-speed Message Transfer Part Level 2 (MTP2) links. These links use the entire E1 at 2.0 Mbps. The SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter also supports performance monitoring, Drop and Insert, bit error rate tester (BERT) functionality, external clocking (with multiple backups), internal clocking, and standard alarm integration. Like the Signaling System 7 (SS7) port adapter, the field programmable gate array (FPGA) on the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter filters duplicate Link Status Signal Units (LSSUs) and Fill-In Signal Units (FISUs) and generates duplicate LSSUs and FISUs on the links. For Q.703 Annex A links, the FISUs and LSSUs are 3 bytes longer than the standard MTP2 FISUs and LSSUs that are processed by the SS7 port adapter. The SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter supports up to 4 High Speed MTP2 links per port adapter. Ports that are not used for SS7, can be used for clocking. Features The SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter provides the following features: Single-width port adapter with 8 E1 RJ-48cC ports Runs on Cisco 7500 Versatile Interface Processor (VIP) Integrated CSU/DSU 1-1

2 Limitations Software configurable for E1 Common external clock source with multiple backups or internal clock MTP2 FISU and LSSU generation and filtering Drop and Insert for non-ss7 time slots ANSI, ITU, and China SS7 variant support Limitations High-speed MTP2 links are supported only on the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter, not on other Cisco port adapters. The SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter supports only high-speed MTP2 links. It does not support 56- or 64-kbps MTP2 links. One SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapte supports four high-speed links. The other T1/E1 ports can be used for clocking. One VIP supports four high-speed MTP2 links. LEDs Figure 1-1 shows the faceplate of the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter. The port adapter has a green enabled LED, a bicolor alarm LED, and a bicolor port status LED for each port on the port adapter. Figure 1-1 LEDs on the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter AL PA-MCX-4TE1-Q EN After system initialization, the enabled LED goes on to indicate that the port adapter has been enabled for operation. The following conditions must be met before the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter is enabled: The SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter is correctly connected and is receiving power. A valid system software image for the port adapter has been downloaded successfully. The system recognizes the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter. If any of the above conditions are not met, or if the initialization fails for other reasons, the enabled LED does not go on. 1-2

3 Cables, Connectors, and Pinouts Table 1-1 lists the functions of the LEDs. Table 1-1 SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter LEDs LED Label Color State Function EN Green On Indicates that the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter is powered up. Off Indicates that the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter is not ready or is disabled. AL Amber On Indicates that an alarm condition exists on the remote end of one of the E1 ports. Red On Indicates that an alarm condition exists locally on one of the E1 ports. Off Indicates that no alarms is detected on any port. 0 through 7 Green On Indicates that the port is enabled and in frame. Yellow On Indicates that the port is in loopback. Off Indicates that the port is not enabled, the received signal is bad, or an alarm condition exists. Cables, Connectors, and Pinouts The E1 interface receptacles on the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter are RJ-48C connectors for E1 (120 ohm). After you properly connect a port to a line, Cisco IOS reports that the line is up in approximately 30 seconds. Each connection supports E1 (120-ohm) interfaces that meet T1.403 and ACCUNET TR62411 standards. The RJ-48C connector does not require an external transceiver. The DS1 ports are T1 interfaces that use foil twisted-pair (FTP) cables. Note Shielded cables (FTP) with 120-ohm impedance are required to comply with CE mark requirements. 7 Port Adapter Slot Locations on the Cisco 7507 and Cisco 7513 Routers Identifying Interface Addresses This section describes how to identify interface addresses for the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter in the supported platforms. Interface addresses specify the actual physical location of each interface on a router or switch. Interfaces on a port adapter maintain the same address regardless of whether other port adapters are installed or removed. However, if you move a port adapter to a different slot, the system recognizes it as a new device and the port adapter must be reconfigured. Note Interface ports are numbered from left to right, beginning with 0. Table 1-3 explains how to identify interface addresses for the SS7 Q.703 High Speed Port Adapter on a VIP in the Cisco 7507 and 7513 routers.
