Abstract This project aims to make DAQ cards available for use through Scilab so as to enable future endeavours such as virtual labs. During the course of this project, two DAQ cards were examined: NI USB-6008 and Advantech PCI The results have been outlined in this report. 4
1 Introduction to DAQ cards Data acquisition is the process of sampling signals that measure real world physical conditions and converting the resulting samples into digital numeric values that can be manipulated by a computer. Data Acquisition cards or DAQ cards convert analog waveforms into digital values for processing. 1.1 Aim of the project The primary aim of the project is to understand the available DAQ cards and make them available for use through Scilab. HART toolbox is an add-on to Scilab XCOS through which DAQ cards can be graphically programmed, much like its commercial counterparts such as Lab- VIEW and Simulink. This, when installed alongside a set of Comedi drivers, helps access quite a lot of outdated DAQ cards through Scilab, and one such card is ADV PCI NI USB-6008 is a newer DAQ card, which does not have a Comedi driver, like most other USB-DAQ cards. After some research, it was discovered that a certain toolbox called NI-DAQmx toolbox exists for Scilab on Windows. The documentation for the toolbox was insufficient. It asked to refer to the C-API reference functions provided by National Instruments along with the DAQ card. Thus simple programs were written to access the DAQ cards for various functionalities, and to test if the available functions were effective. 1.2 Definitions DAQ cards convert analog waveforms into digital values for processing 5
Scilab is an open source, cross-platform numerical computational package and a high-level, numerically oriented programming language. Comedi is a collection of drivers for a variety of common data acquisition plug-in boards. The drivers are implemented as a core Linux kernel module providing common functionality and individual low-level driver modules. atoms or AuTomatic modules Management for Scilab is the repository for packaged extension modules ("Toolboxes"). 6
2 Installation documentation 2.1 NI USB Requirements DAQ Card: USB-6008 Operating System: Windows 8 Scilab version: Scilab Driver used: NIDAQmx Installing the device and accessory software NIDAQmx 9.4 Before installing For development purposes, required RAM is at least 1Gb, and the processor should be Pentium IV or later. For deployment, the RAM required is 256 MB, and processor should be Pentium III/ Celeron 600 MHz or equivalent. Installation Go to NIDAQ-mx 9.4 Download page and choose an option for downloading NI-DAQmx 9.4 for Windows. The file is about 1.2 GB. The executable file is run and the installer opens automatically. If the NI- DAQmx installer does not open automatically, select Start»Run. Enter x:\autorun.exe, where x is the path. Complete the installation. Scilab Before you install Get the installation file from this link. To run the installer, you need admin rights as the installer modifies system registry during the installation. 7
Double click on the file scilab exe when the download is completed. Select language used by Setup program. Select a supported language from the drop down list. Click on OK to continue. Welcome: Click on Next to continue. License Agreement 8
Check the radio-button I accept the agreement, and click Next. Select Destination Location Browse the file system, choose the destination folder for installations, and click Next. By default, destination location is C:\Program Files\scilab Select components Three installation mode: Full Installation (Default), Installation recommended, Custom Installation In this case, you can choose to enable/disable some modules. If you choose to not enable a module, functions will be not installed. Select Start Menu Folder 9
Select Next to continue. Select Additional Tasks (File associations) Ready to Install Click on Install after reviewing the settings. 10
Finish installation Click on Finish to finish the installation. Launch Scilab Launch Scilab from the start menu/desktop/location of installation. 11
2.1.3 Installing NIDAQ toolbox in Scilab In the console window, type: atomsinstall( NIDAQ ) The ATOMS installer installs the NIDAQ toolbox.-restart Scilab. -NIDAQ toolbox loads at startup automatically. If no NI devices are connected, the console outputs No devices detected. If devices are connected, go to NI-MAX and check the available devices with their respective names. The corresponding device name is used in the Scilab code. Once the device is detected in Scilab, we can write and execute code involving DAQ interface. 2.2 ADL PCI-1711/ADV PCI-9112 ADV PCI-1711 was installed on a system with Ubuntu bit. It was done a lot of times over and over again with the card not getting detected, and the problem was found to be a loose connection in the PCI port. The following pages have been extracted from the documentation prepared for the installation of HART toolbox in Scilab/Xcos along with Comedi drivers in order to access a set of Comedi drivers for some outdated devices. [1] 12
Interfacing DAQ card with Scilab/Xcos ====================================================================== Hardware and Software used: DAQ Card Advantech PCI-1711 or Adlink PCI-9112 Operating System Ubuntu Drivers Comedi Drivers Applications Scilab with HART v0.4.6 Toolbox module Installation: Preparation: Installing necessary packages $ sudo apt-get -y install git gcc g++ autoconf automake libtool bison flex libgsl0-dev libboostprogram-options-dev Preparing HART Toolbox $ cd ~ $ wget $ tar -xvf hart_0.4.6.tar.gz $ mv hart_0.4.6 hart Preparing Comedi and Comedilib Note: You can either use official repositories for downloading or the forked official repository from github. If your network doesn t support cloning from official repository use the github repository link. Recommended: $ sudo su <enter your password> # cd /usr/local/src # git clone git://comedi.org/git/comedi.git # git clone git://comedi.org/git/comedilib.git #exit Other Method : $ sudo su <enter your password> # cd /usr/local/src # git clone # git clone #exit
Installing additional modules Note: Portaudio is required for proper compilation of HART Toolbox. $ cd ~ $ wget $ tar -xvf pa_stable_v19_ tgz $ cd ~/portaudio $./configure $ make $ sudo make install Installing sources for existing Kernel: Note: You can also recompile your kernel using sources from kernel.org but preferred method is installing sources for the existing kernel. $ sudo su <enter your password> # cd /usr/src # apt-get install dpkg-dev # apt-get source linux-image-`uname -r` # apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` # ln -snf <kernel-source> linux # cd linux # cp /boot/config-`uname -r`.config # cp../linux-headers-`uname -r`/module.symvers. Note: <kernel-source> refers to the linux-<version> folder in /usr/src which was downloaded above using apt-get source command. # make oldconfig # make prepare # make scripts # sudo reboot Installing Comedi and Comedilib: First we need to remove existing comedi modules in.../kernel/drivers/staging/... to avoid conflicts with the downloaded comedi drivers $ sudo rm -r /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/staging/comedi $ sudo su <enter your password> # cd /usr/local/src Now installing comedi drivers # cd comedi #./autogen.sh #./configure with-linuxsrcdir=/usr/src/linux # make # make install # depmod -a # cp include/linux/comedi.h /usr/include/linux/ # cp include/linux/comedilib.h /usr/include/linux/
