3 z/os Management Facility: definition - z/osmf is a new z/os (product) element which simplifies system administration tasks - z/osmf is a secure Web application running inside z/os - More than just a graphical user interface, the z/os Management Facility is intelligent, addressing the needs of a diversified skilled workforce and maximizing their productivity 3

7 z/osmf: Workflows task A z/osmf workflow is a guided, controlled, auditable sequence of steps used for configuring and maintaining z/os systems. - A workflow is defined using a workflow definition xml file and other files as documented in the z/osmf Programming Guide - A workflow can be defined by IBM, a software vendor, a z/os user Workflows can include: - User assistance (wizards, etc.) - Execution of of JCL, REXX and shell scripts The workflow task provides delegation and notification DEMO 7

8 z/osmf: REST API IBM eserver pseries z/osmf supports the use of Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs to access z/osmf REST services REST client can be command-line or application, remote or z/os The following services are available: - Application Linking Manager interface - Application server routing services - Data persistence services - Multisystem routing services - Software management services - Topology services - TSO/E address space services - z/os data set and file REST interface - z/os jobs REST interface - z/osmf workflow services DEMO 8

9 z/osmf: summary IBM eserver pseries z/osmf benefits: - Web interface and user assistance beneficial for all types of skills - Almost an absolute requirement for some configuration tasks, such as TCP/IP configuration of policy-based networking - Workflows for better control and productivity doing sysadmin tasks - REST API opening z/os services to Cloud clients z/osmf implementation: - Must configure z/os prereqs (CEA, System REXX, CIM server, etc.) - Much simplified starting at z/os V2R1 - MVS standards starting at z/os V2R2 - Start with the plug-ins you plan to use z/osmf resource consumption: - Much reduced starting at z/os V2R1 - With ZIIP processor: CP usage becomes negligible 9
