Guide for web application 8.7 I. Why a web application on target 8.7 of the SDGs? Unlike the Millennium Development Goals MDGs (2000) that were conceived as goals to be achieved only by developing countries, the Agenda for Sustainable Development ( ) commits all countries of the world, developed and developing countries, under the Principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibility. Also, unlike the MDGs, which included 8 goals, the 2030 Agenda is broader and includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals with 169 related objectives. It has been qualified as an ambitious but inspiring agenda, as it shows the need to act in a simultaneous manner from a sustainability approach that considers economic, environmental and social development. The 2030 Agenda is characterized by aspects such as interconnection and the indivisibility of the objectives and its goals, as it is understood that it is not possible to advance in achieving some of them without working on the others, which although positive, demand conscious effort of institutions and governments, to ensure an articulated and coordinated action. This approach is crucial to advance in child labour prevention and reduction. In this 2030 Agenda, unlike the MDGs, fight against child labour has a clear and visible place, included in target 8.7 which seeks among other things- to end child labour in all its forms by 2025, and is linked to SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth. This shows that the global analysis finds in the persistence of child and adolescents labour, a barrier that is necessary to overcome in order to achieve the development that we want for the world. In September 2016, during the UN General Assembly in New York several Global Action Initiatives were launched around some SDGs and specific goals. Following the criteria of interconnection and indivisibility, the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour, commissioned a study to analyze the relationship between target 8.7 and other SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. The study identified and analyzed the direct relations with 35 targets of 9 development goals. See complete study at: See executive summary at: 1
The objective of the analysis is to show that achieving the goal to end child labour will allow fulfilling other objectives and goals of the 2030 Agenda and to put the value and revitalize the action of countries in the region on this topic considering that child labour represents a barrier for the achievement of other goals that are a priority or of interest to national government and actors. This web application facilitates access to key information including through social networks. This document provides a practical guide for the use of the web application in the advocacy work of the focal points of the Regional Initiative in their respective countries and groups as well as other actors and partners. II. Using the application from a computer or laptop How to enter the application? 1 Enter: The home page will be the following:
Home page functionalities At the upper center you will find the tabs Home, Child Labour, 2030 Agenda, Connections with 8.7, Key messages and Links of interest. 2 Click on any of these tabs, a scroll down sub-menu will appear and you can review the specific contents of each section. Within each sub-section, you will always have the option to download the specific contents in PDF format, as well as the full document with the analysis of target At the upper right you will find YouTube, Facebook and Twitter icons that allow access to the social networks of the Regional Initiative just by clicking on the icon of interest. 4 At the lower right, you can choose the language of the web application; Spanish (ES) or English (EN). 5 At the lower left, clicking on the corresponding logo you will access the official pages of the Regional Initiative, ILO for the Americas and SDGs. 6 At the lower left, there is the option to download the study Latin America and the Caribbean: Towards the first generation free of child labour. An integrated and interdependent reading of the 2030 Agenda in relation to target 8.7, which is the base document used for the development of the web application. This button is also available in other sections to facilitate downloading the full report at any time during browsing. 7 To share the web application in social networks, two options are available: Facebook and Twitter. 3
8 At the center of the screen you can see circles of several colours that represent each one of the 17 SDGs of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A coloured icon means that the web application offers information of the analysis of interrelation and interdependency with the theme of children labour. Grey icons are objectives that have not been analysed yet and are not available in the current version of the application. By clicking one of the coloured icons, you will access the explanation of the relevance of the goal and the relationships and interdependencies identified among the SDG selected with target 8.7. Clicking one of the grey icons, the text of the respective SDG will pop out stating that the analysis has not been carried out yet. As the information is expanded, icons will change colour and the corresponding data will be added. Which SDGs have been analysed with regard to target 8.7? The SDGs that have been included in the web application are: SDGs SDG 1 SDG 2 No poverty Zero hunger Topic SDG 3 SDG 4 SDG 5 Good health & well-being Quality education Gender equality 4
SDG 8 SDG 10 SDG 13 SDG 16 Decent work & economic growth Reduced inequalities Climate action Peace, justice & strong institutions For the purposes of the guide, SDG 8 will be used as an example, regarding The promotion of the sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. If you click on circle 8 (to the center), you will see the following: A text is provided explaining the relationship between the central theme of SDGs and the specific theme on child labour, offering global and regional data and references. Press the button Link with SDG 8 to download the section of the document corresponding to the analysis of the SDG. The box at the center provides two types of information. In the column on the left you can see the analysed connections with regard to target 8.7, whereas in the column on the right you can see the goals associated to the objective which have not been analysed yet. 5
In the left column, you can review the corresponding information by clicking on each goal to access the details of the analysis. At the left of the screen, you will find the following: Coloured circles represent the SDGs that have been analysed. It works as a browsing menu: by clicking on each one of the coloured circles, you will access detailed information. Again, grey circles represent the SDGs that have not been analysed yet. To share specific information on the selected SDG, click on Facebook or Twitter. It is worth noting that all the graphs presented in the web application offer the option to see them in a greater size. To do this you must click on the magnifying glass that pops out when you place the cursor on the graph. 6
