2 Major industry change is underway & your participation is vital An International non-for-profit Industry Association: Energy Efficient Buildings is being created to launch a Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) in Energy Efficient Buildings. The estimated budget for the JTI is 2bn over 10 years. Join key industry players in this ambitious EU-wide initiative to set directions and speed up innovation. Contribute to the transformation of the construction from a resource intensive to a knowledge-intensive industry. Contribute to the EU 2020 targets: cut GHG emissions by 20%, 20% renewable energy in energy mix and 20% less primary energy consumption. Lead the development of sustainable high added value technologies, products and services for Energy Efficient Buildings. Buildings are responsible for 40% of total EU Energy Consumption. Primary energy use has to be reduced by 20% by 2020 The building sector must reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020 when compared to 2005 Renewable Energy Sources will have to provide a 20% energy share by This is expected to be 50 Mtoe There is a stock of 160 million buildings in the EU The scale of the change needed in the building sector is huge. JTIs are industry driven, large scale research programs focused on clear technological and economic objectives JTIs are a long-term EU-wide public-private-partnership (PPP) combining: ~50:50 private investment and public funding The JTI will be launched by Why is an Association needed now? The Association is a grouping of major stakeholders in the sector: industry, research institutes and universities Before the JTI gets launched, the Association objectives are: To seek and demonstrate industry engagement and collect information on national research priorities and initiatives To gather support and commitment from EC before 2009 elections (namely DG Research, DG TREN and DG Infso) To define the structure, organisation and statutes of the private part of the JTI What will be the role of the Association once the JTI is launched? The Association will represent the private part of the PPP of the JTI Collect and contribute the financial resources for the operation of the association and the JTI Represent and coordinate industry and other stakeholders research interests within the JTI There are many national and European initiatives in energy efficiency. What will be different about the JTI? Existing mechanisms do not have the scale to address the ambitious EU targets on GHG emissions and energy efficiency The JTI will cover the whole supply and value chain while researching sustainable business models for R&D implementation Through PPPs, the JTI will seek long term financing, construction and maintenance of energy efficient buildings and districts The JTI will maintain strong connections with other ETPs and coordinate EU and national initiatives What is the link with the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP)? The main deliverable of the ECTP Strategic Research Agenda and its Implementation Action Plan, is a proposition for the creation of a Joint Technology Initiative on Energy Efficient Buildings. The plan was approved in June E2B JTI is a tool to implement the ECTP strategy on energy efficient buildings and districts

Current state and structure of the Association The statutes of the Association have been written and approved by all founding members under Belgian law in Sept 2008 The incorporation deed of the Association was confirmed last September. The official launch will take place before 2009 A network of National Liaison Points is being set up to provide up-to-date national data on market demand, national research programmes, key regulation as well as identify new members and disseminate information The association is supported by 3 Directorates General of the European Commission (DG Research, DG Tren, DG Infso) Further support from industry is needed to demonstrate EU-wide demand to the European Commission The Association is organised as follows General Assembly General direction of the Association Ensures the day-to day management of the Association Executive Board 9 Steering Committee Industry 9 Research 5 Elected Members SME 4 Clients 3 Scientific Council (min 10) Advisory body to the Executive Board.
