2 What I'll cover Only considering publishing to the main service. Why we do things the way we do. Publishing the CVS way. Publishing the Netscape Composer way. Publishing permissions. This is NOT an HTML or Apache talk, and will only cover the basics of CVS. 2 of 12 Informatics Web publishing

3 Which web sites? Our Content Management System (CMS) runs on drookit.inf. This primarily hosts but also some institute sites. Why? Accessibility requirements. It's the law. HTML validation is a step towards accessibility, but... It's not fool proof, eg white on white, SSI (Server Side Includes) issues.

6 CVS - Pitfalls Pitfalls: SSI validation, your bit might be OK but the SSI might be broken. Also the SSIs need to follow a strict format. There are some tools to help: tidy ssiexpand ssireduce Renaming/Moving directories, eg a new term or course. Don't copy the special CVS directories. Perhaps you could use cvs import, but I've never bothered to figure out how, and I think it would bypass the validation. I do: 6 of 12 Informatics Web publishing

9 Netscape Composer Also applies to Mozilla, but not Firefox, 'nvu' is the equivalent Settings on the web at: Mainly intended for quick fixes. WYSIWYG can hide too much of the important stuff from you. Examples: Simple edit to an existing page. Creating a blank page - does this actually work? 10 Netscape Composer When it doesn't work, there are very little clues as to why not. Though it is usually one of two reasons: 1. Permissions (more on this later) 2. Invalid HTML - there's not much the user can do about this. We can look behind the scenes on drookit in / tmp/publishxxxx/. Where XXXX is a process id, and contains the file they tried to upload. 10 of 12 Informatics Web publishing

11 Publishing Permissions This is on the web team docs: Mostly anyone with a publishing account can "checkout" any web page. Only the "commit" phase is restricted by the CVSROOT/avail file. Users can't find out what their access is. They need to ask us. Some branches are restricted check outs, we use an ACL patch to cvs for this. It's a bit yuk.
