ASP.NET using an.aspx extension We are looking at two kinds of server controls HTML server controls and ASP.NET web server controls. HTML server controls: "HTML server controls are HTML tags understood by the server. HTML Server Controls HTML elements in ASP.NET files are, by default, treated as text. To make these elements programmable, add a runat="server" attribute to the HTML element. This attribute indicates that the element should be treated as a server control. Note: All HTML server controls must be within a <form> tag with the runat="server" attribute! Note: ASP.NET requires that all HTML elements must be properly closed and properly nested." ASP.NET Web server controls: "Web server controls are special ASP.NET tags understood by the server. Web Server Controls Like HTML server controls, Web server controls are also created on the server and they require a runat="server" attribute to work. However, Web server controls do not necessarily map to any existing HTML elements and they may represent more complex elements. The syntax for creating a Web server control is: <asp:control_name id="some_id" runat="server" />" 1

Form msdn.microsoft.com "Displaying from ASP.NET There are several ways to display information from an ASP.NET program. One approach is to use the <%= %> construction. Another approach is to use the Response.Write statement. Using <%= %> The simplest way to display information from an ASP.NET program is to use the <%= %> construct. The value that is entered after the equals sign is written into the current page. The following code displays the value of the variable name. Hello <%= name %>! If the value of name were "Frank", the code would write the following string in the current page: Hello Frank! The <%= %> construct is most useful for displaying single pieces of information. The Response.Write Statement Another way to display text is to use the Response.Write statement. It can be enclosed within a <% %> block. <% Response.Write("Hello, World!") %> The Response.Write statement can also be used in a function or method within a script block. The following example shows a function that includes a Response.Write statement. NoteNote In ASP.NET pages, functions and variables should be defined within <script> blocks, while executable code must be enclosed within<% %> blocks." 3

net/answers/ sub button1 source object e eventargs Interesting discussion of Sender EventArgs etc 5

With the web server control I use <asp:label The label control with asp: lets you display text on the page. It must be used with the runat="server" 6

Page_Load is executed when the page is loaded. The top one ends with a / and the next one ends with </asp:label> just to show that both work. I believe the second one is preferred. 7

Quote from Microsoft documentation: "The ServerClick event is raised when the HtmlButton control is clicked. This server event causes a round trip to occur from the client to the server and back. It is deliberately different from the client side OnClick event. If a conflict exists between code run with a ServerClick event and code run by a client side OnClick event, the server side event instructions will override the client side code." 8

innerhtml can be used to set or return the HTML content from Tizag: "Each HTML element has an innerhtml property that defines both the HTML code and the text that occurs between that element's opening and closing tag. By changing an element's innerhtml after some user interaction, you can make much more interactive pages." 14
