2 RUTHERFORD HIGH SCHOOL Rutherford, New Jersey Computer Department COURSE - Advanced Web Design and Media Applications Statement of Purpose : Advanced Web Design and Media Applications is a year long course for students interested in creating dynamic internet web site projects along with other complex and interactive media. Students develop graphic editing, movie making, HTML programming and many other content creation skills. Students use various state of the art programs together to create projects which are posted online throughout the year. They will gain skills that are needed to succeed in the web -design workplace of the twenty-first century. Students in this course use computers on a regular basis. Through lessons, planning, designing and implementing exercises, students practice each piece of software and discover many of the techniques themselves. They work together in small teams, pooling their resources and sharing each other s strengths. Students in this course will appreciate the applications of web - design in the real world by applying their skills to create interactive,informative sites that give interactive, compelling and useful content to the user. Students will receive more hands on practice by maintaining and updating the school district site throughout the year. The course is open to juniors and seniors and has as prerequisites Computer Programming I and Multimedia Design. There is an additional prerequisite of either satisfactory completion of Web Page Design or experience with HTML as evidenced by the satisfactory completion of a project or a test administered by the teacher of Hypermedia. Hypermedia will be an expansion of skills already learned in the semester course Web Design. As new technologies are invented, students are encouraged to spend a part of their time researching an independent topic of their choice. Students are expected to have a desire to experiment and explore new software or techniques that are not taught in the class. The classroom environment and schedule are fashioned in such a way that students are given time to research independent ideas and present them to the class, sharing their newly acquired knowledge. General Student Outcomes : The student will be able to : A. Manage the uploading of a web site with various FTP tools. B. Develop high level HTML layout skills with numerous HTML programs C. Integrate interactive HTML coding with forms & Javascript. D. Integrate dynamic HTML effects with Java script & layers. E. Maintain and integrate new content into the school district web site. F. Create web ready images in numerous graphics programs G. Create graphics with vector based graphic editing tools. H. Create animated gifs with numerous programs. I. Create 3-D still images and movies with various programs. J. Create sprite based interactive Shockwave. K. Integrate high-level decision based Lingo scripts into Shockwave projects.

3 L. Create vector based animations and interactivity with numerous programs. M. Create interactive Quicktime Virtual Reality panoramas and objects. N. Integrate interactive Java Scripts. O. Create cross platform Adobe Acrobat Portable Document files for web distribution. P. Create and compress video for Web & CD-ROM distribution with various programs Q. Create and test cross platform CD-ROMs with Virtual PC. R. Compress audio and video with Real Producer. S. Capture, edit, compress and post Quicktime video using Final Cut Pro and imovie. T. Explore their own ideas, experiment with various software features, and discover talents based on their own desires. Use Fireworks to create web safe gifs and jpegs. G. Vector Based Images - - (WR2, VPA1.3) 1. Use Flash to create interactive vector based flash based web graphics. 2. Use Photoshop, Illustrator & Streamline to create flash based vector based web graphics. 3. Use Fireworks and Director 7.0 to create interactive vector based shockwave graphics. H. Animaged GIFS - - (WR2, VPA1.3, VPA1.1) 1. Use Photoshop and GifBuilder to create animated gif files 2. Use Director, Movie Player and Graphic Converter to create animated gif files. 3. Use any MOV making program, Movie Player and Graphic Converter to create Gif89a files I. 3-D Graphics - - (WR2, LA3.5, VPA1.3, VPA1.1) 1. Use Photoshop s various filters and effects to create 3-D still images. 2. Use Infini-D / Bryce 3-D or RayDream 3-D to create 3-D still images. 3. Use any of the above mentioned programs to render quicktime moves of 3-D motion. J. Shockwave - - (WR2, WR3, M4.4, LA3.3) 1. Use Director to create interactive shockwave movies. 2. Use HTML programs to incorporate the shockwave files into web pages. 3. Use high level shockwave scripting to jump to different shockwave files or web pages. K. Lingo Scripting - - (WR2, M4.4) 1. Use Director variables to implement complex lingo scripts. 2. Use Lingo programming with loops to create multiple sprite placements 3. Use Lingo programming with conditionals and other commands to switch & hide sprites. L. Vector based animation - - (WR2, VPA1.3, LA3.5) 1. Use flash to create scriptable buttons 2. Use flash to create different types of animations 3. Use flash to create complete interactive animations for insertion into web pages. M. Quicktime VR - - (WR2, VPA1.3, VPA1.1) 1. Use QTVR Authoring studio and the digital camera to create QTVR panorama files

5 2. Use QTVR Authoring studio to create interactive QTVR object files 3. Use QTVR Authoring studio to create interactive hot spots in their movies. N. Interactive Java Script - - (WR2, M4.4) 1. Explore and experiment with the basics of JavaScript variables and output commands to create interesting and interactive features into a web page. O. Acrobat Portable Document Format - - (WR2) 1. Use PDF writer to create PDF files from any program that supports print. 2. Implement PDF files into web sites using the PDF Plugin. P. Quicktime Video Compression - - (WR2, WR3, VPA1.3) 1. Use Quicktime Player to compress video with different compression schemes, frame rates and data rates. 2. Use Media Cleaner, Sorenson compression and reference movies to create high quality web based movies which are tailor made to match the user s modem speed. Q. Cross Platform CD - - (WR2, LA3.3) 1. Use Director and Virtual PC to create Windows PC.EXE files 2. Use Virtual PC and the Mac OS to test the cross platform capabilities of each projector file. 3. Use Toast CD burner to create ISO cross platform CD-Roms. R. Real Audio & Video - - (WR2) 1. Use Real Producer or Media Cleaner Pro to compress quicktime files into real format. 2. Use web authoring tools to embed the real format files into HTML pages. S. High Quality Quicktime - - (WR2) 1. Capture video using digital video cameras using Final Cut Pro and imovie. 2. Trim, edit and learn the advanced editing features of Final cut pro. 3. Compress and post Quicktime video onto various websites. T. Exploration, Experimentation and Discovery - - (WR2) 1. Discuss their independent ideas with the teacher. 2. Use web based tutorials, books, and experimentation to learn how to do something new. 3. Discover new skills and implement them into their own projects. Evaluation : Students will be evaluated by a variety of assessment tools and strategies which include teacher made Lesson Assessments, homework journal entries and other assignments in accordance with the Rutherford High School

6 homework policy, Project assessments, student presentations, observation of teamwork, and a final exam. Students will also be encouraged to assess their own work in order to strive for the highest level of achievement they can attain.
