3 Introducing Tables HTML tables are defined using the <table> element Tables are divided into rows and columns Rows are defined using the <tr> element (table row) Columns/Data cells are defined using the <td> element (table data cell) Column header are usually rendered inside <th> element (table header) [optional] Data are defined inside the data cells (either <td> or <th> ) Lecture 04 A. 7 The border Attribute The value of this attribute is the width you want the outside border of the table to be, in pixels The attribute has been deprecated and replaced with border property in CSS Lecture 04 A. Al-Tamimi 7
8 The bgcolor Attribute This attribute sets the background color for the table The value of this attribute can be either a color name or a six-digit code (hex code) Example : bgcolor= red Example : bgcolor= # This attribute has been deprecated and replaced with background-color property in CSS Lecture 04 A. 9 The cellpadding Attribute This attribute is used to create a gap between the edges of a cell and its contents Its value is specified either using pixels or percentage of each cell width Example: cellpadding= 5 Example: cellpadding= 2% This attribute has been deprecated and replaced by padding property in CSS Lecture 04 A. 11 The width Attribute This attribute is used to specify the width of the table, it its value is given either in pixels or the percentage of the containing element (usually <body> element ) Example: width= 400 Example: width= 50% Lecture 04 A. Al-Tamimi 11

13 The <tr> Element This element is used to contain each row in a table Anything appearing within <tr> element should appear on the same row It carries the following attributes: align bgcolor valign Lecture 04 A. Al-Tamimi 13
14 The align Attribute This attribute is used to specify the position of the content of all the cells in the row Any <td> cells are usually left-aligned, while <th> are usually centered Value left right center justify Purpose Content is left-aligned Content is right-aligned Content is centered horizontally within the cell Text within the cell is justified to fill the cell Lecture 04 A. 15 The valign Attribute This attribute is used to specify the vertical alignment of the contents of each cell in the row (deprecated and replaced by vertical-align) Value top middle bottom baseline Purpose Aligns content with the top of the cell Vertically aligns the content in the center of the cell Aligns content with the bottom of the cell Aligns content so that the first line of text in each cell starts on the same horizontal line Lecture 04 A. 17 The <td> Element Both <td> and <th> elements carry the same set of attributes, these attributes apply only to that one cell carrying it Any effect these attributes have will override settings for the table as a whole or any containing element (such as <tr> and <table>) Some attributes to consider: height (height in CSS), colspan, nowrap (nowrap= nowrap ), rowspan, valign(vertical alignment), width (width) Lecture 04 A.
