1 For Today Foundation Medicine Reporting Interface Design
2 Foundation One Interaction Design: The Nutshell Foundation One is an interface that allows oncologists to view genomic test results for cancer patients. The interface was designed to specifically address oncologists demanding schedules as well as the need to filter through complex information sets. Interactions were designed to be as efficient as possible, providing oncologists with streamlined paths to reports, scannable summaries of information, and robust but intuitive controls to dive deeper into information sets. The Report of Record serves as an anchor point, while an Updates view to be added in a future release provides dynamically-served information based on the test results, turning the patients static personalized report into a living document that reflects a growing body of research and available clinical trials. 2
3 The platform s interface brings clarity and precision to complexity. The project presented the opportunity to introduce design to a field in which it has not been historically embraced. 4 Foundation One Interaction Design: The Brief Oncologists are inundated with multiple software applications in their daily practice, with each interface having vastly different features, functionality, and visual treatments. Foundation Medicine had a unique challenge to solve: how could they integrate a dynamic precision medicine treatment resource into the workflow of oncologists? Foundation Medicine is tackling a major challenge: helping busy oncologists incorporate complex information from genomic testing into their practice. The project s intent was to help practicing oncologists sort through the overwhelming amount of new findings and data to aggregate and pinpoint information that is relevant for each of their patients. 4

The design s user experience needed to be as easy to use as paper while also demonstrating immediate benefits beyond the static paper report. 6 Foundation One Interaction Design: The Process The team consisted of two interaction designers, a design researcher, a visual designer, and a design technologist. The team ran in concurrent modes, building early hypotheses on design, interactions, and implications for development to reach a 9-week project deadline. Participatory Design Initial findings evolved into a set of key workflows, interactions, and page designs, creating paper prototypes and visual artifacts for participatory design sessions with oncologists. The team emerged from the sessions with a clearer understanding of priorities relevant to oncologists daily practice and workflow. Design and Prototyping The team s designers and technologists worked together to build a working prototype of the system. The team created application maps, interaction models, and systems definitions to define the first release and future experiences. The team also did visual explorations by redesigning the paper report to inform the design of the reporting interface. Design and Documentation Once the system was defined, the team created detailed design specifications, digital guidelines, reference code, and technical documentation. These outputs were shared with the Foundation team and their development partners for the final build. Foundation Medicine Reporting Interface Design 1/31/13 6 6
7 Working closely with oncologists, the team created an interface that balances simplification with significance of information. The team also gained key insights for branding a new healthcare startup while avoiding the visual cues oncologists generally write off as marketing noise.
