Primo New UI: Lessons Learned & How to Let the Healing Begin Dan Moore --Oregon State University Anne M. Pepitone --University of Washington
OSU s Primo New UI Migration
Reasons We Went Live with New UI Went live August 2017 Responsive layout No mobile CSS for Classic UI May 2017 s enhancements to accessibility Alliance s pooled development efforts (Central Package) Good [internal] feedback
Strategies for Rolling Out Internal stakeholder meetings Library Shared ILS Group Reference and Instruction Group(s) Branches News alert on library s homepage Alert box on new search page Campus-wide
Configuration/Customization Decisions Facets Right side (new) layout Auto-collapsed all but the Top 5 (Availability, Resource Type, Topic, Creator, and Publication Date) Enabled persistent checkboxes after user feedback
Configuration/Customization Decisions Mashup Changes First change was to set up mashup_new.css in Alma and unify font styling across Primo and Alma iframe Additional edits: Primo Toolkit - Mashup Cookbook -
Header
Configuration/Customization Decisions Front Page - update help text
Configuration/Customization Decisions Two scenarios - New Search, or, directly access Primo URL
Issues found Immediate/Solved Direct link to My Library Card Library s homepage search box - in general Also, with quotes Permalinks with auth information broken General grumbling Ongoing Request buttons disappearing Speed Multiple application refreshes
User Feedback - Survey Feedback survey linked in both library s news bulletin and Primo main menu Survey asked: 1. User status (student, staff, faculty, etc.) 2. I want to say something about - look and feel, difficulty using new interface, content, things I like, things I d like to change, and something else 3. Comment (text box) 4. An optional field to add for follow-up a. Spoiler alert - no one gave us their
User Feedback - Good things! Love the little dancing diamonds. Dammit! I know I shouldn't but I do. Navigability within item records is much improved. The auto load of results at the bottom left is great - I just wish it allowed more than ten results. It also seems to be a little laggy, though I suppose that could be my connection - I love not having to click on a tiny number. The pinning feature is SO much better than the eshelf. And i LOVE that you can tag rather than put in folders - so much easier to have the same things categorized differently for different purposes. Overall I think it is a great improvement. (Faculty - internal) Smooth...Pretty cool! Great work (Grad student) Overall design looks more streamlined (Undergrad student) It's very aesthetically pleasing and intuitive to use. I wish the institution where I work had something that looked/functioned as nice! (Community member)
User Feedback - Not so good things Books print journals home page too opaque (Faculty - external) It s harder for me to scan through lists to find articles related to my research (Grad student) Can we please keep the old version? (Grad student) It feels slower than before. I also don't like the new loading diamond animation (Undergrad student) The library search engine is no longer user-friendly, especially when I m trying to view multiple sources in a single search. I prefer to search a subject, open several hits in new tabs, and examine each one individually. (Grad student) I really hate the new format. It is confusing and difficult to use. (Undergrad student)
User Feedback - Well... Web design in general has already been stupid for a good 20 years no one remembers what the big selling point was for HTML initially and now every site just copies smartphone interfaces because What s A Computer? So when we use real computers, we have very weak interfaces full of meaningless icons teaching someone to find out what meaningless icons are by clicking on them is dangerous for reasons I hope I don t have to spell out. Also, as someone with a background in computers, it shocks me to think that web interfaces manage to be slow in I mean, if you consider fundamentally what the request and response are, and the capabilities of all of the hardware across the line. Only a few cynics would ever have imagined this. (Community user)
Handling User Issues and Regaining Trust Time Re-focusing efforts on shared LibGuide boxes and ensuring 100% compliance with all teaching librarians Three usability sessions in October 2017 Library Shared ILS group triage Many, many s Maintaining high degree of service at both circulation and information desks; workshops/liaison work
Future Plans Refinements to UI via Central Package work (PCSG) Refinements to overall OSULP branding Usability testing

Issues found Experienced Initially Still Experiencing Zotero functionality Requesting buttons disappearing Service page linking issues Screen flashes of code snippets Bleeding institutional code My Favorites sorting problems External search box issues with quotes Direct link to My Library Card not working as intended Online access links not linking to the right part of the item details. Speed Specific facets not displaying on a different tab PCI key problems Slides at: 26 :
User Feedback--The Good, Bad & The Ugly... Good-ish I really like the interface! I like not having to deal with multiple tabs to see all the info for a record. I like the bigger text, more prominent icons and book images. The save/share icons on the right of the results screen make it easy to do stuff. I like the copy to clipboard function for permalinks. Overall, it s just a much better interface, less clicking, easier reading. The new e-shelf favorites is so much better than the previous version. Slides at: 27 :
User Feedback--The Good, Bad & The Ugly... Bad The new site appears both slow and confusing. Trying to request a book and it has been taking forever. Any chance we can have a choice of using the previous site? It is very frustratingly sluggish. Is it all those pretty useless book cover images loading that takes so long? The new search function and personal account views are terrible. The new one takes a lot of clicks confusing. I can't open in new tabs any possibly interesting resources (like I used to), which makes it easier to filter and multitask. Slides at: 28 :
User Feedback--The Good, Bad & The Ugly... Ugly I know the situation is not your fault, but to have a such a dramatic drop of quality in a research university library search is a scandal. The visual arrangement of content has become much more confusing. In addition to being fed a ridiculously small number of result (10 at a time) that makes efficient access to searches impossible, there are additional clicks that weren't there to get to online access of the article, some of which do not work. For some reason, the print size has become bigger as well for no reason: search users didn't all suddenly become myopic so that they need 16 point size on the left "Sort By" column ("External Search"; "Availability"; "Resource Type" etc.) & 14 point size in the results. Not only is there a puny amount of results at a time, those results are also displayed in a ridiculously large font size.... Its as if there trying to make up for the paucity of content by inating the size of the few items doled out. Whose interests are being served here? Certainly not those of the users. Was this the cheapest deal possible? Slides at: 29 :
User Feedback--The Good, Bad & The Ugly... Bad & Ugly I can t modify preferences to look at more than 10 items at a time (and loading the next "page" takes forever, even on my machine). I can't imagine using this to do any serious literature searches; I need to be able to quickly read an abstract or chapters in a book to be able to determine if it's worth my time to investigate, and right now, the current interface limits me to interrogating one item at a time, which is not ideal. Where is the option to place an item on hold at a particular library? Why has the interface changed to look as if we were in the mid 90s? with this new interface I can't find the option to request, it s not there. I hate this system, it is quite ugly. Slides at: 30 :
Handling User Issues & Regaining Trust Establishing a Known Issues page Creating detailed guides Meetings with Reference staff Constant communications with staff Lots of listening and understanding Reminding users that sometimes we can t control nor fix some of these issues. Remembering self care for yourself and staff Having a good laugh at the situation or cry whichever works best for you Slides at: 31 :
