2 Introduc-on Internet search sites can search enormous databases of Web pages, using -tles, keywords or text. You can maximize the poten-al of search engines by learning how they work, and how to use them quickly and effec-vely. The challenge is to ask your ques-on the right way, so that you don't end up overwhelmed with too many search results, underwhelmed with too few, or simply unable to locate the material that you need. As with most skills, prac-ce makes perfect!

3 Introduc-on Database the informa-on comes from books, magazines, journals etc. which have gone through a review process Search engines they find informa-on on Internet. There is not a review process. You make the judgment whether the informa-on is valid and accurate

4 Introduc-on Before doing a search, it's important to define your topic as completely and succinctly as possible. Write down exactly what informa-on you're looking for, why you're looking for it, and what you're not looking for. This will help you to discover the best keywords for your search.

5 Search Engines A web search engine is designed to search for informa-on on the World Wide Web.

7 Boolean Searching AND : use to narrow the search Example: Tiger and Cat It only return pages that have both words

8 Boolean Searching OR: This will return pages that have at at least one of these words on the page. It will expand your search Example: Tiger OR Cat

9 Boolean Searching NOT: This tells the search engine to retrieve one keyword but not the other word Example: Cambodia NOT Educa-on Cambodia Educa-on AND NOT: means "I want documents that contain this word, but not if the document also contains another word." The query "London" AND "Big Ben" AND NOT "Buckingham Palace" would return documents that include London and Big Ben, but not those that also include Buckingham Palace. Remember that AND NOT only applies to the word or phrase that immediately follows it.

10 Phrase Searching Surround groups of words with quota-on marks to tell the search engine to retrieve documents in which those words appear side by side Example: Global Warming

11 Title Searching This tell the search engine to only return web pages that have the phrase in the -tle. Example: Title: Global Warming

13 Plural Forms, Capital Le_ers Most search engines interpret lowercase as either uppercase or lowercase. Limit your results by using uppercase le_ers Most search engine interpret singular keywords as singular or plural. Limit your results by using plural forms of words.

14 Domain Searching This will allow you to limit results to certain domains such as websites from Cambodia (.kh), educa-onal ins-tu-ons (.edu) or government sites (.gov).com = a commercial business.edu = an educa-onal ins-tu-on.gov = a governmental ins-tu-on.org = a non- profit organiza-on.mil = a military site.net = a network site

30 Quick Tips Use nouns as query keywords. Never use ar-cles ("a," "the"), pronouns ("he," "it"), conjunc-ons ("and," "or") or preposi-ons ("to," "from") in your queries Use 6 to 8 keywords per query Where possible, combine keywords into phrases by using quota-on marks, as in "solar system" Spell carefully, and consider alternate spellings Avoid redundant terms Check the "Help" func-on of the par-cular search engine you're using, since they all have their own quirks and preferences
