1 Online Tutorial on How to Locate Information in the Area of Industrial Engineering Class: IE 3630 Work Measurement and Design IE 4430 Total Quality Management Date: February 8, 2001 Professor: Dr. Balachandran Librarian: Bryan Schwark, Division Librarian for EMS Combining the following two class workshops will give more variety and a better understanding that the exercises are given as examples, and that there are many ways of searching for information. The intent is that some of these suggestions will help you 1) find better information faster, 2) better understand the workings of the databases that contain references to the literature of Industrial Engineering, 3) locate some full-text material of the desired information. Note: books and journal articles not available locally may usually be obtained through Interlibrary Loan Try clicking the above link and choose Periodical Article Request, and note... E-Doc (Electronic Document Delivery) allows the user (if the journal is available from the UW-Madison campus) to access an electronic copy of an article within several days via the web, rather than waiting for the arrival of a paper photocopy Work Measurement and Design. Principles and techniques of work design, operations analysis, and job design. Work methods design and analysis; predetermined time systems; stopwatch time studies; work sampling; discuss improvement re-engineering compensation; standards development. Safety and ergonomic considerations in work design will be emphasized Total Quality Management. Emphasis on modern Total Quality Management philosophies, Statistical Process Control methods and tools for problem solving and ongoing process improvement. Acceptance sampling procedures and standards, experimental design including Taguchi techniques, quality audits. Economic aspects of quality decisions, basic concepts in reliability analysis. Basics of ISO 9000, Q S9000.

Catalogs Contain titles and holdings of individual libraries, and in union catalogs, the titles and holdings of libraries in a state, region, the U.S., or other parts of the world. A. Karrmann Library Online Catalog - UW-Platteville's holdings of materials. B. Wiscat - (Union Online Catalog for Wisconsin Libraries) Bibliographic information or over 1,200 libraries in Wisconsin. C. WorldCat - (Union catalog of the members of the OCLC Online Computer Library Center) Provides bibliographic access to the holdings of thousands of libraries in the US, Canada, Europe, and other parts of the world. II Electronic Resources -Journal Indexes, Full-Text and more... Generally commercial databases that provide indexing and abstracting to citations to journal information that may be available in the library, through Interlibrary Loan (ILL), or full-text. A. ABI INFORM - (Indexes and abstracts more than 1,300 scholarly and trade business journals, including popular magazines, and offers 600+ full-text titles) B. Applied Science & Technology Full Text - (Specialized magazine/journal database specifically in the area of applied science and technology with some full-text information.) C. Carl Uncover - (Provides an indexing and abstracting service for almost 20,000 multi-disciplinary journals as far back as fall 1988.) D. Academic Search (EBSCOHost) - (General magazine or journal database for citations to information and/or the information itself full-text, items will be in the Library or the Library can obtained them through Interlibrary Loan.) 3 The following portions of the self-directed workshop are examples of databases and search strategies with screen capture examples. Please follow the examples through and try "your subjects" in the live databases. One of the main objectives of this presentation is to provide you with an Online Tutorial that you can review at your own pace, and yet provide you with a knowledgeable base for locating information. YOU MUST BE IN A DATABASE FOR THE GRAPHICS TO RESPOND TO COMMANDS.] I. Catalogs--First select A. Karrmann Library Online Catalog - Searches can be done by: 1. Author, Title, Library of Congress Subject Heading, Call Number, Journal Title a. Select Author/Title/Subject and then select "Subject." b. Type: time and motion or total quality management (These terms may not be Library of Congress Subject Headings-LCSH) c. Click on "Search"and see what the search indicates... if there are not any Headings for this search, either the term is spelled wrong or not LCSH d. If there is a "See Also" reference, this may lead to other useful LCSH. e. If you tried time and motion, that was not a LCSH and did not work.. f. At top of page click "New Search" and try a Keyword Boolean search. 2. Keyword Boolean a. If you type time and motion and click on "Search you get "The system could not interpret your search statement." The reason is you must put the phrase in quotes, or capitalize the Boolean operator AND. Type "time and motion and click Search. (None of these will be very helpful other than the title Engineered work measurement provides for a LCSH which leads to 11other entries.) b. Try time AND motion, and select Methods, standards, and work design, and note the Call Number, Location, and Status. c. Also note the "hotlinked" Library of Congress Subject Headings...Subjects: Time study and Motion study and try clicking them for additional materials. Time study or Motion study, or Work measurement, could have been used in a "Subject" search.

WISCAT (Wisconsin Catalog) [From the Library Home Page, 1) click on Journal Indexes, Full-Text and more..., 2) locate Choose an Electronic Resource and 3) using the arrow, 4) select WISCAT (Wisconsin Catalog), and click on Go. ] 1. Click Click Here to Begin, choose Express search. 2. Anyword box type in work measurement or total quality management And click Begin Search, which displays many items by title, arranged numerical and then alphabetical order.

There are a number of libraries in Wisconsin that have this title. 6. Click on the hotlinked Subject Work Measurement, which leads to over 100 titles in Wisconsin libraries that deal with Work Measurement.

WorldCat (Union catalog of the members of the OCLC Online Computer Library Center) [From the Library Home Page, 1) click on Journal Indexes, Full-Text and more..., 2) locate Choose an Electronic Resource and 3) using the arrow, 4) select WorldCat, and 5) click on Go. ] 1. Try total quality management in quotes in the Search for: box and leave the default setting to Keyword. The results is over 6,000 entries.

Select ISO 9000 quality systems handbook, from the title listing and note basic citation information of author, title, edition, etc. and the SUBJECT (S) Total quality management, Quality control, Quality control -- Standards. 3. Note the hotlink Unfortunately this item that can not be obtained online through Netlibrary, not a public domain title, and our library does not have access, other than on ILL. 4. Libraries ICON at the top indicates if a Wisconsin library has item, and then the ILL icon at the top can be used for requesting a book or video title.

ABI INFORM - [ From the Library Home Page, 1) click on Journal Indexes, Full-Text and more..., 2) then use the arrow to the right of Choose an Electronic Resource, 3) then click on ABI/Inform, 4) click on Go, 5) under Search selected databases check ABI/INFORM Global, 6) Click Continue. ] 1. Enter total quality management in quotes in the Enter a word or phrase box and click Search, there will be many articles listed. 2. To reduce the number of articles, add AND philosoph* and Search. [ Note the asterisk truncates the word and covers singular and plural, etc.]

Note the bibliographic citation provides the authors of the article, the title of the article, the title of the journal, the volume, issue, date, and page. Some entries have hotlinked Subject Terms: 4. Look through the document and select Appendix A towards the end of the article.
